General practitioners and endometriosis: Level of knowledge and the impact of training.

OBJECTIVE: To assess general practitioners' (GPs') knowledge of and practice in the diagnosis and management of endometriosis following the publication of updated French national guidelines in 2017. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive, anonymous, epidemiological survey of 102 GPs in the Picardie region of France. RESULTS: Only 25% of the GPs considered that they knew enough about endometriosis for their routine clinical practice. This proportion was 58.9% amongst GPs with an university diploma in gynaecology and 31.4% amongst those participating in continuing medical education courses on gy

Clinical practice patterns of speech-language pathologists for screening and identifying dysphagia.

PURPOSE: To identify how speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in the United States are screening for and identifying dysphagia. To do this, we examined the approaches most often used to screen for dysphagia and the influence of contextual factors such as setting, continuing education and means of staying up to date with the most current literature on screening approaches. METHOD: A web-based survey composed of 32 questions was developed and field tested for content, relevance and workflow. The survey was distributed online, via social media, online SLP forums and through the American Speech-La

Practice patterns and attitudes toward education among Canadian obstetricians and gynecologists.

A group of 1370 specialists in obstetrics and gynecology were surveyed for information about practice patterns, continuing medical education preferences, and their perception of the adequacy of their own residency training. The overall response rate was 65.7%. More than half were in solo practice, practiced in communities of over 250,000, had been in practice for more than 10 years, or had a full or part-time appointment with a Canadian medical school. A wide range of continuing medical education methods were used. Journals were ranked highest by 41%. It is disturbing that very few physicians

An Innovative Collaborative Treatment Model: The Community-Based Speech-Language Pathologist and Cleft Palate Team.

PROBLEM: Children with cleft-related articulation disorders receive ineffectual or inappropriate speech therapy locally due to lack of training and a disconnect between the team and local speech-language pathologists. SOLUTION: A collaborative care program that is billable for the team allows the local speech-language pathologist to earn continuing education units and facilitates effective local speech therapy. This program is the first of its kind, according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Continuing Education Board for Speech Pathology.

Keeping it going: the importance of delivering interprofessional education during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT Globally, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has highlighted the need for better interprofessional collaboration and teamwork. When disciplines have worked together to undertake testing, deliver care and administer vaccines, progress against COVID-19 has been made. Yet, teamwork has often not happened, wasting precious resources and stretching health-care workforces. Continuing to train health professionals during the pandemic is challenging, particularly delivering interprofessional education that often uses face-to-face delivery methods to optimise intera

Hepatorenal syndrome: beyond liver failure.

Critical care nurses occasionally confront patient conditions that are not common. One such condition is hepatorenal syndrome (HRS). Three primary processes contribute to regional alterations in circulation in the renal and splanchnic beds. These processes include effective hypovolemia from the massive release of vasoactive mediators, thereby underfilling circulation, systemic and splanchnic vasodilation along with renal vasoconstriction, and hyperdynamic circulation. A "second-hit" hypothesis, whereby a triggering event causes intravascular volume depletion, likely initiates the development o

Getting grounded: Educational foundations for nurses' lifelong learning.

Lifelong learning is key to excellent nursing. Ensuring nurses have a strong foundation for lifelong learning requires a connection between pre-licensure nursing education and ongoing workplace learning. Currently, however, a line deeply divides nurses' learning during post-secondary education and their learning in the workplace. Expanding on the findings from a previously published grounded theory study exploring workplace learning in experienced nurses, I explore aspects of the theory relevant to nursing education in more depth. I describe the concept of Getting Grounded, a process of develo

Obstetrician-gynecologists and contraception: long-acting reversible contraception practices and education.

OBJECTIVES: Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) - the copper and levonorgestrel intrauterine devices (IUDs) and the single-rod implant - are safe and effective but account for a small proportion of contraceptive use by US women. This study examined obstetrician-gynecologists' knowledge, training, practice and beliefs regarding LARC methods. DESIGN: A survey questionnaire was mailed to 3000 Fellows of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. After exclusions, 1221 eligible questionnaires were analyzed (45.8% response rate, accounting for exclusions). RESULTS: Almost al

A survey of practices in infectious diseases by obstetrician-gynecologists.

OBJECTIVE: To survey current practices among obstetricians and gynecologists concerning a wide range of infectious diseases to guide future efforts in continuing medical education. METHODS: A survey questionnaire of multiple-choice questions was mailed to 2500 physicians, under age 65, randomly selected from the American Medical Association specialty list of obstetrician-gynecologists. The first 500 returns constituted the data set and were analyzed by computer. RESULTS: We found many clinical areas in which practice patterns were deemed appropriate, including antibiotic selection, universal

Actinic keratosis: preventable and treatable like other precancerous and cancerous skin lesions.

Actinic keratosis, like many other precancerous and cancerous skin lesions are preventable and treatable. Nurses, physicians, other health care providers, school teachers, daycare workers, grandparents, parents, and children must assume the role of educating others regarding attitudes and knowledge about sun damage to the skin. Protecting one's skin should be a lifelong process from the newborn period onward. However, if sun damage does occur, the next important step is early detection of skin cancer. Individuals with associated risk factors should be screened routinely by health care personne

Anatomy of Complications workshop: an educational strategy to improve performance in obstetricians and gynaecologists.

Many specialist obstetricians and gynaecologists feel inadequately trained to deal with certain situations such as injury to bowel, bladder, ureter and major vessels, and value further training to prevent and manage these problems. We present the structure, objectives and rationale for a surgical skills workshop, which is an intensive practical learning experience aimed to improve the performance of obstetricians and gynaecologists. The overall objective of the workshop is improvement in the prevention and management of complications in obstetric and gynaecological surgery. Over 100 participan
