Subacute dislocation of the elbow following Galeazzi fracture-dislocation of the radius: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: The Galeazzi fracture-dislocation was originally described by Sir Astley Cooper in 1822 but was named after Italian surgeon Ricardo Galeazzi in 1934. It is an injury classified as a radial shaft fracture with associated dislocation of the distal radioulnar joint and disruption of the forearm axis joint. The associated distal radioulnar joint injury may be purely ligamentous in nature, tearing the triangular fibrocartilaginous complex, or involve bony tissue (that is, ulnar styloid avulsions) or both. We report this case because of the rare association of posterior dislocation of

Partial allograft replacement of the radial head in the management of complex fracture-dislocations of the elbow.

BACKGROUND: There have been reports of total radial head allografts showing variable outcomes. This case series reports the novel use of an allograft for partial radial head replacement in the treatment of elbow fracture-dislocation. METHODS: Eight patients underwent partial radial head allograft reconstruction to restore stability for complex fracture-dislocations involving fractures of the coronoid and radial head, with collateral ligament disruption. Two patients were treated acutely. Six were referred from other centers 2 to 48 weeks after injury following failure of primary treatment. In

Elbow arthrodesis following a pathological fracture in a dog with bilateral humeral bone cysts.

A 10-month-old Yorkshire Terrier was referred for evaluation of an intermittent right thoracic limb lameness that acutely progressed to non-weight-bearing. A diagnosis of bilateral bone cysts of the humeral condyles with a pathologic fracture of the lateral aspect of the right humeral condyle was given following radiographic and histopathologic examination. Bilateral pathology necessitated consideration of treatment modalities other than amputation of the limb, as previously reported. Arthrodesis of the right elbow using a 2.0 mm locking bone plate was performed. The dog did not experience any

Elbow instability associated with bicolumnar fracture of the distal humerus: report of three cases.

Ulnohumeral subluxation or dislocation is rare after open reduction and internal fixation of a bicolumnar fracture of the distal humerus. We report 3 patients in whom detachment of the origins of the lateral collateral ligament and common extensor muscle origins from the lateral epicondyle contributed to postoperative instability after open reduction and internal fixation of a fracture of the distal humerus. This may be due to either unrecognized ligament injury or iatrogenic injury during surgical dissection.

[Treatment of distal comminuted humeral fracture with serious osteoporosis by total elbow arthroplasty].

OBJECTIVE: To analyse short-term clinical effect of total elbow arthroplasty in treatment of distal comminuted humeral fracture with serious osteoporosis in geratic patients. METHODS: From April 2006 to October 2007, five cases of distal comminuted humeral fractures were treated by total elbow arthroplasty with bone cement. Of them, there were 2 males and 3 females, aging 50-76 years old (mean 67.6 years old), including 4 cases of closed fracture and 1 case of open fracture (II type Gustilo-Anderson). All fractures were caused by tumbling. According to classification of AO, there were 2 cases

[Median nerve entrapment after fracture dislocation of the elbow: a two-cases report].

The median nerve entrapment after elbow-dislocation is rare. We report two cases of fracture dislocation elbow completed by entrapment of median nerve occurred after reduction in two children. For both cases, the diagnosis of entrapment was made some months later after injury. Median nerve graft was performed after nerve resection. The nerve recovery was satisfactory at the final follow-up. This nerve complication should be suspected systematically before and after reduction of all dislocation of the elbow in the children. The indication of nerve release or nerve graft depends on the entrapmen

Total elbow replacement for complex fractures of the distal humerus. An option for the elderly patient.

The treatment of multifragmentary, intra-articular fractures of the distal humerus is difficult, even in young patients with bone of good quality, but is worse in elderly patients who have varying degrees of osteopenia. We have evaluated the functional outcome of primary total elbow replacement (TER) in the treatment of these fractures in ten elderly patients followed for a minimum of one year. There were no complications in regard to the soft tissues, bone or prosthesis. The mean range of flexion obtained was 125 degrees (110 to 140) and loss of extension was 23.5 degrees (0 to 50). The mean

Controversies on the treatment of irreducible elbow dislocations with an associated nonsalvageable radial head fracture.

We report the case of a 26-year-old man who sustained an elbow dislocation with an associated radial head fracture entrapped in the joint, preventing closed reduction. A posterolateral approach to the radial head was performed to reduce the dislocation. A comminuted fracture of the entire radial head was found that required excision. Although radial head replacement has been stressed to restore sufficient stability in similar cases (because most are inherently unstable), it is important to determine whether the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) is intact. Intraoperative use of valgus stress aids

Traumatic laceration of the radial nerve following supracondylar fracture of the elbow. A case report.

Traumatic laceration of the median, ulnar, or radial nerve is an extremely rare complication of supracondylar fracture of the humerus in children. A recent review of the literature disclosed only two reported cases of a laceration involving the radial nerve; a third such injury in an 8-year-old boy is reported in the present paper. Traumatic neuropraxia of one or more of the three adjacent peripheral nerves is a more common complication of supracondylar fracture, with the great majority of these lesions responding to conservative treatment. Vascular compromise secondary to traumatic laceration

Chronic Complex elbow fracture dislocation: Restoration of elbow function with ORIF and radial head replacement, a case report with long term follow up.

INTRODUCTION: The dislocation of the elbow joint to the posterior or postero-lateral region accompanied by fractures in the radial head or neck and coronoid process of the Ulna is known as a terrible triad injury of the elbow (TTI). IMPORTANCE: This injury presents as unique challenge for orthopedic surgeons due to elbow instability and stiffness, making the surgical intervention more difficult than usual. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old man suffered from polytrauma, including a pelvis fracture, a left humerus shaft fracture, and left ulna shaft fracture. An open reduction and internal fixa

Modified Masquelet Technique Assisting 3D Printed Elbow Prosthesis for Open Elbow Fracture with Severe Bone Defect: A Case Report and Technique Note.

BACKGROUND: Internal fixation for severe open articular bone defects is sometimes ineffective or dangerous. In the emergency stage, radical debridement and infection prevention are demanded to provide a good tissue base and the space-occupying effect to provide enough necessary space to avoid soft-tissue contraction for the reconstruction. In addition, the 3D printing technology makes individual limb reconstruction a reality. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we present a 31-year-old patient with an open fracture and severe bone defect of his left elbow caused by traffic accident, classified as Gustil

Diagnostic performance of ChatGPT-4.0 in elbow fracture detection: A comparative study of radial head, distal humerus, and olecranon fractures.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence has been increasingly used for radiographic fracture detection in recent years. However, its performance in the diagnosis of displaced and non-displaced fractures in specific anatomical regions has not been sufficiently investigated. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy and sensitivity of Chat Generative Pretrained Transformer (ChatGPT-4.0) in the diagnosis of radial head, distal humerus and olecranon fractures. METHODS: Anonymized radiographs, previously confirmed by an expert radiologist and orthopedist, were evaluated. Anteroposterior and lateral ra

Revision total elbow arthroplasty for aseptic and septic nonunion of distal humerus fractures: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Distal humerus fractures can be difficult to manage in older patients with poor bone quality and those with risk factors for failure of open reduction internal fixation. When nonunion occurs, there are limited repeat fixation options and conversion to total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) can be considered. The objective of this descriptive, retrospective case series is to compare the outcomes of TEA for aseptic vs. septic nonunion of distal humerus fractures. METHODS: Seven cases were identified by 2 orthopedic surgeons that specialize in TEA. The inclusion criteria were as follows: (a)

Percutaneous leverage reduction with kirschner-wire fixation assisted by elbow arthrography for pediatric radial neck fractures.

OBJECTIVE: Radial neck fractures in children can easily become complicated if not managed properly. Percutaneous reduction using the leverage technique with or without internal fixation with a Kirschner wire (K-wire) is a minimally invasive approach for treating angulated radial neck fractures in children. The study aims to evaluate the radiological and clinical outcomes of percutaneous leverage reduction assisted by elbow arthrography for pediatric radial neck fractures. METHODS: From January 2016 to June 2020, we treated 47 children with angulated radial neck fractures, including 35 boys an

Less common than expected: late displacement after minimally displaced pediatric lateral condyle fractures of the elbow.

The incidence of late displacement among pediatric lateral condyle fractures has been described as 1.3-26%. However, prior studies are limited by small cohort sizes. The aim of this study was to determine the rate of late displacement and delayed union among lateral condyle fractures following immobilization in a large cohort and to establish additional radiographic criteria to help surgeons choose between immobilization and operative fixation for minimally displaced fractures. We performed a dual-center retrospective study of patients with lateral condyle fractures between 1999 and 2020. Pati

Paediatric elbow fractures and public play spaces: adherence to standards for children's playground equipment and surfacing.

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar humerus fractures (SCHF) are the most common fractures sustained following a fall onto an outstretched hand among healthy children, and one of the leading causes of hospital admission and surgical intervention. The aim of this study was to examine SCHF occurring at public play spaces-particularly to determine whether or not the playground equipment implicated in injurious falls aligned with Canadian playground safety standards. METHODS: Cases of children who attended the provincial paediatric orthopaedic clinic following SCHF at a public playground between April 2017
