A comparative study of the effects of magnetic stimulation and electric stimulation on peripheral nerve injury in rat.

The influence of pulsed magnetic stimulation (MS) on the sciatic nerve injury was investigated. Thirty rats were divided into three groups equally: MS group (A), electric stimulation (ES) group (B) and the control group (C). The MS and ES were applied immediately after the first 10 min of the sciatic nerve crush. Sciatic function index (SFI), toe spreading reflex (TSR), muscular weight and volume were measured after the experiment. The TSR of in the groups A and B occurred at 4th day while in the control group it occurs at 10th day. There was statistically significant difference in SFI between…

Effects of transcutaneous electrical phrenic nerve stimulation and transcutaneous electrical diaphragmatic stimulation: A protocol for a randomized, single-blind, crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) are at high risk of developing respiratory muscle weakness, which may lead to prolonged mechanical ventilation and worsening clinical outcomes. Noninvasive neuromuscular electrical stimulation techniques, such as transcutaneous electrical phrenic nerve stimulation (TEPNS) and transcutaneous diaphragmatic electrical stimulation (TDES), offer potential therapeutic options for patients unable to generate voluntary active contractions. However, there is limited research directly comparing the effects of these modalities on diaphragmatic functio

Interaction of electrical stimulation and voluntary hand movement in SII and the cerebellum during simulated therapeutic functional electrical stimulation in healthy adults.

The therapeutic application of functional electrical stimulation (FES) has shown promising clinical results in the rehabilitation of post-stroke hemiplegia. It appears that the effect is optimal when the patterned electrical stimulation is used in close synchrony with voluntary movement, although the neural mechanisms that underlie the clinical successes reported with therapeutic FES are unknown. One possibility is that therapeutic FES takes advantage of the sensory consequences of an internal model. Here, we investigate fMRI cortical activity when FES is combined with voluntary effort (FESVOL

Anti-PD-1 blockade reverses low-intensity electric stimulation-driven pancreatic cancer progression.

BACKGROUND: Irreversible electroporation (IRE) represents a potential therapeutic approach for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). However, differences in tumor size and shape can lead to an uneven distribution of the electric field, causing certain cells to receive only low-intensity electric stimulation (LIES). This study aimed to explore the tumor immune microenvironment following LIES and evaluate the synergistic antitumor effects of LIES combined with anti-PD-1 blockade. METHODS: Orthotopic PDAC models in mice were treated with LIES with or without anti-PD-1 blockade. In vitro assay…

Application of Electric-Field-Optimized Augmented Reality-Guided Neuronavigation in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.

Background: Navigated repetitive TMS (nrTMS) is widely used for non-invasive mapping of cortical functions. Methodological improvement might be achieved by optimizing coil positioning based on electric-field modeling and augmented reality (AR)-guided neuronavigation to enhance spatial targeting accuracy and stimulation-induced language errors. Therefore, we compared electric-field-optimized, AR-guided nrTMS with conventional nrTMS using manually planned coil positioning. Methods: Twenty-eight healthy subjects underwent two MRI-guided left hemispheric nrTMS language mapping sessions. Each sessi

Electric stimulation coupled with activated carbon enhances lactic acid production from food waste.

High-value recycling of food waste (FW) can be accomplished through the production of lactic acid (LA). In this work, LA was produced via electro-fermentation (EF) on FW as a single substrate in non-sterile, non-inoculated environment. Electric stimulation (ES) coupled with granular activated carbon (GAC) was used to increase LA production. The findings demonstrated that the addition of 10 g/L of GAC to the system at a voltage of -1 V for 144 h of fermentation resulted in an increase in the LA concentration and maximum production rate of 33.6% and 12.2%, respectively, when compared to the Blan…

EFMouse: A toolbox to model stimulation-induced electric fields in the mouse brain.

Research into the mechanisms underlying neuromodulation by tES using in-vivo animal models is key to overcoming experimental limitations in humans and essential to building a detailed understanding of the in-vivo consequences of tES. Insights from such animal models are needed to develop targeted and effective therapeutic applications of non-invasive brain stimulation in humans. The sheer difference in scale and geometry between animal models and the human brain contributes to the complexity of designing and interpreting animal studies. Here, we introduce EFMouse, a toolbox that extends previo

A flexible workflow for simulating transcranial electric stimulation in healthy and lesioned brains.

Simulating transcranial electric stimulation is actively researched as knowledge about the distribution of the electrical field is decisive for understanding the variability in the elicited stimulation effect. Several software pipelines comprehensively solve this task in an automated manner for standard use-cases. However, simulations for non-standard applications such as uncommon electrode shapes or the creation of head models from non-optimized T1-weighted imaging data and the inclusion of irregular structures are more difficult to accomplish. We address these limitations and suggest a compr…

Eliciting Smiles and Laughter During Intraoperative Electric Stimulation of the Cingulum: Surgical Scenario.

Laughter has a major role in daily social interactions; consequently, its biologic bases have been previously studied. Nevertheless, its cerebral representation remains unclear. The most accepted hypothesis has postulated that laughter has 2 components: mirth, related to the temporal and frontal neocortical areas, and motor aspect, related to the limbic system and brainstem. Furthermore, in prior studies, laughter has been elicited during electric stimulation with depth electrodes in the supplementary motor area and the cingulum. This Video 1 reports resection of a right superior frontal gyrus…

New perspectives for the modulation of mind-wandering using transcranial electric brain stimulation.

When our attention is decoupled from an ongoing task and becomes coupled to thoughts and feelings not being subject to task engagement, we are mind-wandering. This transient and pervasive mental process can occupy a considerable amount of our waking hours. Mind-wandering is understood to exert both positive and negative effects on well-being, and has been shown to play a role in mood disorders and depression. Here we summarize recent research aiming to investigate whether states of mind-wandering can be modulated using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive, reversible

Venous leg ulcer healing with electric stimulation therapy: a pilot randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Compression therapy is a gold standard treatment to promote venous leg ulcer (VLU) healing. Concordance with compression therapy is, however, often sub-optimal. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of electric stimulation therapy (EST) to facilitate healing of VLUs among people who do not use moderate-to-high levels of compression (>25 mmHg). METHOD: A pilot multicentre, single-blinded randomised controlled trial was conducted. Participants were randomised (2:1) to the intervention group or a control group where EST or a sham device was used 4 times daily for 20 …

Electric field stimulation induced neuronal differentiation of filum terminale derived neural progenitor cells.

Adult filum terminale (FT) is an atypical region from where multipotent neural progenitor cells (NPCs) have been isolated. However, poor neuronal differentiation rate of FT-NPCs currently limits their clinical applications. Using custom-designed electric fields (EFs), this study sets up a method to significantly improve neuronal differentiation rate of rat FT-NPCs in vitro. We investigated the influence of EF strength on rat FT-NPCs differentiation. By adding reasonable strength of EF to FT-NPCs, our data shows a significant increase in neuronal differentiation rate. The present innovation pro
