Night-to-night variability of sleep electroencephalography-based brain age measurements.

OBJECTIVE: Brain Age Index (BAI), calculated from sleep electroencephalography (EEG), has been proposed as a biomarker of brain health. This study quantifies night-to-night variability of BAI and establishes probability thresholds for inferring underlying brain pathology based on a patient's BAI. METHODS: 86 patients with multiple nights of consecutive EEG recordings were selected from Epilepsy Monitoring Unit patients whose EEGs reported as within normal limits. While EEGs with epileptiform activity were excluded, the majority of patients included in the study had a diagnosis of chronic epil…

Quantitative electroencephalography characteristics of tilt-induced neurally-mediated syncope among youth.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the quantitative electroencephalographic (QEEG) patterns associated with tilt-induced syncope in youth. METHODS: Several QEEG parameters were analyzed. Data were calculated for peak or nadir changes with syncope for amplitude-EEG, fast Fourier transform (FFT) power in several frequency ranges, 8-13 Hz/1-4 Hz frequency ratio, and FFT edge. RESULTS: Changes in QEEG parameters were present among all patients with tilt-induced syncope (n = 76). These changes included increases in the low frequency FFT power (1-4 Hz range), decreases in the power ratio (8-13 Hz/1-4 Hz)

Brain dysfunction in chronic pain patients assessed by resting-state electroencephalography.

Chronic pain is a common and severely disabling disease whose treatment is often unsatisfactory. Insights into the brain mechanisms of chronic pain promise to advance the understanding of the underlying pathophysiology and might help to develop disease markers and novel treatments. Here, we systematically exploited the potential of electroencephalography to determine abnormalities of brain function during the resting state in chronic pain. To this end, we performed state-of-the-art analyses of oscillatory brain activity, brain connectivity, and brain networks in 101 patients of either sex suff…

Multivariate analysis of single-sweep evoked brain potentials for pharmaco-electroencephalography.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Current findings on altered evoked potentials (EPs) caused by morphine are based on common alterations for a group of subjects after drug administration. However, this ignores the analysis of individual responses, which may explain the clinical differences in efficacy. Therefore, we explored the individual responses to morphine in terms of the altered single-sweep characteristics in a placebo-controlled crossover study. To account for multifactorial mechanisms, several characteristics were assessed simultaneously by multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA). METHODS: EPs were

Mumps meningitis: electroencephalography and leukocyte migration inhibition by basic myelin protein.

In 20 patients with mumps meningitis, electroencephalography and leukocyte migration inhibition tests with basic myelin protein were carried out. Fourteen patients had mild or moderate EEG abnormalities indicative of encephalitis as well. Cellular reactivity to basic myelin protein was found in 4 cases only. The observations support the concept that mumps meningoencephalitis is a consequence of a direct viral impact onto the nervous tissue, i.e. no neuroallergic mechanisms are involved.

Impact of cataract surgery on a delirium-related electroencephalography index in older adults.

The bispectral electroencephalography (BSEEG) method is a simple one-channel quantitative electroencephalography approach that yields a single index, with higher scores previously associated with more severe delirium in older adults. We prospectively measured BSEEG scores in 21 patients over 60 years old before and 1 month after cataract surgery. BSEEG scores significantly decreased after surgery (p=0.001), and this decrease significantly correlated with improvement in best-corrected visual acuity (r=0.52; p=0.02). Improved visual function after cataract surgery was associated with lower BSEEG…

Differential impact of manganese on glutamate clearance, electroencephalography, and sleep in Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Underlying glutamate dysregulation in Alzheimer's disease can be worsened by environmental factors like manganese (Mn) exposure. This study examined how excess Mn affects glutamatergic signaling and neurotransmission in a beta-amyloid mouse model. METHODS: APP/PSEN1 and control mice were exposed to systemic Mn subcutaneously. Gene expression, glutamate clearance dynamics, electroencephalography (EEG) activity, and sleep architecture were analyzed using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), Western blot, ex vivo hippocampal slices, and EEG recordings. RESULTS: Mn exposu…

Electroencephalography: A valuable tool for assessing motor impairment and recovery post-stroke.

Stroke is a leading cause of adult disability, and restoring motor function post-stroke is critical to improving the well-being and quality of life of affected individuals. Accurate and timely assessment of motor function is essential for developing effective rehabilitation strategies and predicting recovery outcomes. Electroencephalography (EEG) offers a non-invasive, real-time monitoring of brain activity, offering personalized insights into motor impairment and recovery. Its simplicity and bedside applicability make EEG a valuable tool and a potential biomarker for brain function. In recent…

Application of Electroencephalography (EEG) in Combat Sports-Review of Findings, Perspectives, and Limitations.

Introduction: Combat sport athletes are exposed to repetitive head impacts yet also develop distinct performance-related brain adaptations. Electroencephalography (EEG) provides millisecond-level insight into both processes; however, findings are dispersed across decades of heterogeneous studies. This mechanistic review consolidates and interprets EEG evidence to elucidate how participation in combat sports shapes brain function and to identify research gaps that impede clinical translation. Methods: A structured search was conducted in March 2025 across PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Cochrane Librar…
