Cardiac electrophysiology: theoretical considerations of a potential target for weak electromagnetic field effects.

With the widespread introduction of extra high voltage power transmission lines in the 1960s, and subsequent to early reports from Soviet Union scientists about health risks for transformer station personnel, public concern regarding the effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on biological function has given rise to a large number of investigations and legislation to limit domestic and occupational exposure to EMFs. The underlying rationale for concern is related to the fact that living cells are electrically active, which makes them potentially vulnerable to electromagnetic interference. In…

Effect of 50-Hz electromagnetic field on the retention of toxic radionuclides in rat tissues.

The effect of electromagnetic field (EMF) 50 Hz, 10 mT, on the tissue retention of radiotoxic polonium-210 and thorium-234 was studied in a rat model. Regarding 210Po in the ionic state, small but significant effects were obtained by exposure of rats to EMF either before the intravenous injection of 210Po (pre-exposure) or after the rats had already been injected with 210Po (post-exposure). When compared with control values, pre-exposure to EMF caused a significant 28% decrease in the retention of 210Po in the skin and a 10% decrease in total 210Po retention in the investigated tissues. Human adverse reproductive outcomes and electromagnetic field exposures: review of epidemiologic studies.

Concerns have been raised regarding a relation between residential and occupational electromagnetic (EM) field exposures and adverse reproductive effects. This paper reviews the epidemiologic evidence for this possible relation, including some pertinent methodologic issues, notes relevant findings from the experimental literature, and discusses areas for future research. Evidence is lacking for a strong association between a woman's use of a video display terminal (VDT) during pregnancy and spontaneous abortion. The evidence for a strong association between a women's use of a VDT and other adv

Neuroendocrine mediated effects of electromagnetic-field exposure: possible role of the pineal gland.

Reports from recent epidemiological studies have suggested a possible association between extremely low frequency (ELF; including 50- or 60-Hz) electric- and magnetic-field exposure, and increased risk of certain cancers, depression, and miscarriage. ELF field-induced pineal gland dysfunction is a possible etiological factor in these effects. Work in our laboratory and elsewhere has shown that ELF electromagnetic-field exposure can alter the normal circadian rhythm of melatonin synthesis and release in the pineal gland. Consequences of reduced or inappropriately timed melatonin release on the

On an electromagnetic calculation of ionospheric conductance that seems to override the field line integrated conductivity.

The ionospheric conductance is the major quantity that determines the interaction of the magnetosphere with the ionosphere, where the magnetosphere is the large region of space affected by Earth's geomagnetic field, and the ionosphere is its electrically conducting inner boundary, lying right on the edge of the atmosphere. Storms and substorms in space dissipate their energy through ionospheric currents, which heat the atmosphere and disrupt satellite orbits. The ionospheric conductance has, heretofore, been estimated using the staticized physics known as electrostatic theory, which finds that

The effects of pulsed electromagnetic field on experimentally induced sciatic nerve injury in rats.

Some experimental research indicates that low-frequency pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) stimulation may accelerate regeneration in sciatic nerve injury. However, little research has examined the electrophysiological and functional properties of regenerating peripheral nerves under PEMF. The main aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of PEMF on sciatic nerve regeneration in short- and long-term processes with electrophysiologically and functionally after crushing damage. Crush lesions were performed using jewelery forceps for 30 s. After crush injury of the sciatic nerves,

Electromagnetic Field Exposure Changes Due to the Digital Television Switchover in Thessaloniki, Greece.

In the present work, the changes in the exposure to electromagnetic fields due to television signals incurred by the digital switchover in Thessaloniki, Greece, are investigated. It is shown that the measured electric fields comply with ICNIRP guidelines but are higher than those in the reported literature for other countries. However, this may be attributed to the selection of measurement points. Moreover, it is shown that the median value of the power density dropped from 60 μW m during analog broadcasting to 13.3 μW m for digital television. This finding indicates that the digital switchove…

Characterization of personal RF electromagnetic field exposure and actual absorption for the general public.

In this paper, personal electromagnetic field exposure of the general public due to 12 different radiofrequency sources is characterized. Twenty-eight different realistic exposure scenarios based upon time, environment, activity, and location have been defined and a relevant number of measurements were performed with a personal exposure meter. Indoor exposure in office environments can be higher than outdoor exposure: 95th percentiles of field values due to WiFi ranged from 0.36 to 0.58 V m(-1), and for DECT values of 0.33 V m(-1) were measured. The downlink signals of GSM and DCS caused the h

Radiofrequency and extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field effects on the blood-brain barrier.

During the last century, mankind has introduced electricity and during the very last decades, the microwaves of the modern communication society have spread a totally new entity--the radiofrequency fields--around the world. How does this affect biology on Earth? The mammalian brain is protected by the blood-brain barrier, which prevents harmful substances from reaching the brain tissue. There is evidence that exposure to electromagnetic fields at non thermal levels disrupts this barrier. In this review, the scientific findings in this field are presented. The result is a complex picture, where…
