Embryologic and Fetal Development of the Eyelid and the Lacrimal Drainage System.

The embryological and fetal morphogenesis of the eyelids and lacrimal drainage system is multifactorial and complex. This protracted process begins in the 5th week of prenatal life and involves a successive series of subtle and tightly regulated morphogenetic events. Major milestones of the embryological and fetal development of the eyelids include the beginning of eyelid formation during the 6th week, eyelid fusion by the 8th week, and the development of eyelid structures beginning in the 9th week (immediately following eyelid fusion), with progression until eyelid separation by the 24th week

The importance of embryology for parents of children with congenital hand differences.

This study aimed to determine whether embryology knowledge or explaining the possible developmental pathway error was important for parents of affected children, and to secondarily determine if there was a relationship between desired knowledge of embryology and disease severity, maternal age group or maternal level of education. Using a self-administered questionnaire, a significant proportion of responding parents considered knowledge of embryology important (32 out of 43). We found a significant association between the importance of embryology knowledge for parents and the disease severity.

Limited Dorsal Myeloschisis: Reconsideration of its Embryological Origin.

BACKGROUND: Limited dorsal myeloschisis (LDM) is postulated to be a result of incomplete dysjunction in primary neurulation. However, clinical experience of LDM located below the first-second sacral (S1-S2) vertebral level, which is formed from secondary neurulation (S2-coccyx), suggested that LDM may not be entirely explained as an error of primary neurulation. OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the location and characteristics of LDM to investigate the possible relation of its pathoembryogenesis to secondary neurulation. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients were surgically treated for LDM from 2010 to 2015

Embryology, anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the peritoneum and the peritoneal vasculature.

The peritoneum is a large serous membrane with both epithelial and mesenchymal features, and is essential for maintaining an intra-abdominal homeostatic equilibrium. The peritoneum plays a central role in the pathogenesis of a number of disorders. Pathological processes affecting the peritoneum such as inflammation and carcinomatosis can have serious clinical consequences, but the pathophysiology of these conditions is poorly understood. Understanding peritoneal embryology, anatomy and physiology is crucial to comprehend pathophysiological mechanisms and to devise a new focus for research. The

The intravesical phallus in patients with cloacal exstrophy: An embryologic conundrum.

BACKGROUND: Phalluses present inside the extrophied bladder of cloacal exstrophy (CE) newborns have been sporadically reported in the literature; this clinical entity has largely unknown origins and may represent an extremely rare anomaly of CE. OBJECTIVE: Along with nearly doubling the number of reported intravesical phalluses in the literature, this study aims to outline the common anatomic features and discuss the implications for theories of CE embryogenesis. STUDY DESIGN: The authors retrospectively identified patients with CE and a potential intravesical phallus between 1997 and 2017 a

Calreticulin in the Heart: From Embryological Development to Cardiac Pathology.

BACKGROUND: Calreticulin is a Ca(2+)-binding chaperone in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) which is crucial to the correct embryological development of the heart in mice. Altered expression levels in the adult were correlated with several cardiac pathologies such as cardiac hypertrophy and dilated cardiomyopathy. AIM: In this review, we aim to describe the role of calreticulin in the embryological development of the heart in mice and to clarify the relationship between the different cardiac pathologies and altered expression levels of calreticulin in the adult heart. CONCLUSION: There is an ER

Anatomy and embryology of umbilicus in newborns: a review and clinical correlations.

Umbilicus is considered a mirror of the abdomen in newborns. Despite its importance, the umbilicus has been stated in literature and textbooks as discrete subjects with many body systems, such as the urinary, digestive, and cardiovascular ones. This article aimed to address the basic knowledge of the umbilicus in relation to clinical disorders under one integrated topic to aid physicians and surgeons in assessing newborns and infants. The umbilicus appears as early as the fourth week of fetal life when the folding of the embryonic plate occurs. The umbilicus appears initially as a primitive um

Morphometry of posterior cerebral artery: embryological and clinical significance.

Posterior cerebral artery, terminal branch of basilar artery joins the posterior communicating artery to help complete the circulus arteriosus cerebri in human beings. A study of 89 formalin-fixed brain specimen of either sex and of Indian origin has showed that the mean length and diameter of the posterior cerebral artery was 6.75 +/- 1.482 mm and 1.7 +/- 0.7 mm respectively. Anomalous origin of the posterior cerebral artery was the only variation found during the present study. The incidence of occurrence of the particular variant was 2.2%. The variation did not have any sex or side predilec

A burgeoning science of embryological genetics demands a modern ethics.

This brief article discusses the nature of recent scientific advances in reproductive biomedicine and genetics, their moral implications and their effects on society. The pace of research has amplified exponentially, leading society into situations incomprehended by our ancestors. Early studies on reproductive biology in animals, and clinical methods such as artificial insemination by donor spermatozoa, were introduced several centuries ago and led to prolonged ethical disagreements. The 20th century witnessed the introduction of controlled ovulation in laboratory animals, the fertilization of

Distal aneurysms of the unpaired ACA: embryologic and therapeutic aspects.

Anatomical variants of the cerebral arteries in general are frequent and due to the complex ontogenesis of these structures. Although encountered in many mammals, a single anterior cerebral artery (ACA) trunk is an infrequent finding in humans with an incidence of 3-5%. This vessel, giving rise to the arteries of both frontal lobes, is subjected to high flow volumes and distal arterial aneurysms have repetitively been encountered, mostly however before the introduction of endovascular treatment strategies. We report on five patients with acute SAH and arterial aneurysms of an unpaired ACA, who

Mediastinal fetus in fetu. Case report and embryological discussion.

Fetus in fetu is an extremely rare condition defined by the presence of both axial skeleton and organoid formations in the parasitic mass. Besides some authors assuming that fetus in fetu and highly-differentiated teratomas are part of the same pathogenic spectrum, it has been emphasized that these criteria indicate a rather different embryogenetic mechanism. We herein report the first case to our knowledge developed in the ventral mediastinum that was thought to be a tumor before birth. The literature is reviewed and we propose a new explanation for the development of this rare anomaly, based

Clinical and embryologic aspects of penile duplication and associated anomalies.

OBJECTIVES: To report 2 cases of penile duplication and review the literature in an attempt to categorize the associated anomalies in relation to the degree of penile duplication. Embryologic considerations of this rare anomaly are also reviewed. METHODS: We report 2 distinct cases of diphallia. In the first case, true complete penile duplication was associated with multiple malformations, including a cloacal anomaly, colon and bladder duplication, a horseshoe kidney, a bifid scrotum with undescended testes, a hypoplastic right leg, and a ventricular septum defect. The second patient presente

Utero-vaginal hypoplasia. Sonographic, embryologic and clinical considerations.

Congenital absence of hypoplasia of the uterus is a cause of primary amenorrhea in approximately 15% of cases. Ultrasound is often employed as an early imaging modality in the evaluation of patients with primary amenorrhea. Demonstration of total absence or marked hypoplasia of the uterus in the presence of normal ovaries during pelvic ultrasound examination, suggests the diagnosis of congenital uterine aplasia or hypoplasia. Sonography may obviate the need for laparoscopy and for other imaging modalities. A case report of uterovaginal hypoplasia in association with anal atresia and recto-vagi

[Embryology of the human hip with special reference to the development of the labra].

For the clinician the knowledge of the intrauterine development of the human hip is of great importance particularly for an understanding of the pathogenesis of congenital hip displacement. Observations based on serial sections of fetal hips from our collection showed that the acetabular roof is generally well developed. The posterior wall, on the other hand, consists mostly of the fibrous labrum and little coverage is provided by cartilage. Since the fetal hip is in a position of flexion, a pressure exerted on the knee will be transmitted to the posterior wall of the acetabulum and not to the

Congenital hemifacial hyperplasia: an embryologic hypothesis and case report.

Congenital hyperplasia is a developmental disorder characterized by marked unilateral asymmetry. The structural disproportions from one side to the other far exceed variations commonly seen in the normal population. Classically, as first described in 1836, the overgrowth of tissue is restricted to one-half of the body, including the extremities. In other cases the hyperplastic enlargement involves segmental areas of the body, such as the hemifacial skeleton and an extremity. A case report is presented, and the clinical characteristics of 192 cases of congenital hyperplasia in the literature ar

Hypertelorism and the median cleft face syndrome. An embryological analysis.

A microscopical study of the early and late development of the face was performed in 77 human embryos and fetuses. After the transformation of both nasal placodes, via nasal grooves, into the nasal tubes the ectoderm of the face is closed superficially and the early development of the face (less than or equal to 17 mm crown-rump length (C-RL)) is terminated. Between the nasal tubes the internasal groove is present. Furthermore these embryos show physiologically a flat nose and hypertelorism. During the late development (greater than or equal to 17 mm C-RL) of the face the internasal groove dis

[Diverticulum of the brachiocephalic trunk--angiographic image and embryologic significance].

A diverticulum of the brachiocephalic trunk is described in 5 children with unilateral absence of the pulmonary artery, in a child with tetralogy of Fallot, and in an other child with Bland-White-Garland syndrome. The diverticulum is a remnant of a contralateral ductus arteriosus, which cLosed after birth and represents the origin of the distal part of the sixth aortic arch.

Congenital alar field defects: clinical and embryological observations.

Congenital malformations of the nasal ala may occur as isolated unilateral nasal alar defects or as part of more severe facial clefting syndromes. The embryologic significance of the isolated alar deformity seems separate from other craniofacial deformities and justified comment. Clinical examples of isolated nasal alar malformations are correlated with a study of 60 human embryos ranging from seven to 10 weeks gestation. These studies indicate that the nasal and alar developmental fields each have a separate critical time during which cells are most susceptible to altered development.
