Cereulide production capacities and genetic properties of 31 emetic Bacillus cereus group strains.

The highly potent toxin cereulide is a frequent cause of foodborne intoxications. This extremely resistant toxin is produced by Bacillus cereus group strains carrying the plasmid encoded cesHPTABCD gene cluster. It is known that the capacities to produce cereulide vary greatly between different strains but the genetic background of these variations is not clear. In this study, cereulide production capacities were associated with genetic characteristics. For this, cereulide levels in cultures of 31 strains were determined after incubation in tryptic soy broth for 24 h at 24 °C, 30 °C and 37 °C.

Detection of Bacillus cereus as a causative agent of emetic food poisoning by an unconventional culture procedure.

Bacillus cereus is known to cause two types of food poisoning: emetic and diarrhoeal. Both diseases are usually self-limiting; however, severe cases have been reported, presenting with acute liver failure and encephalopathy, including rarely fatal cases of vomiting. Clinical laboratories do not routinely test for B. cereus in patients with gastrointestinal disease. Therefore, B. cereus causing food poisoning goes undetected. We report a successful isolation of emetic B. cereus from a patient with food poisoning who presented with severe vomiting, fulminant hepatic failure, and acute encephalop

Mechanisms of Nausea and Vomiting: Current Knowledge and Recent Advances in Intracellular Emetic Signaling Systems.

Nausea and vomiting are common gastrointestinal complaints that can be triggered by diverse emetic stimuli through central and/or peripheral nervous systems. Both nausea and vomiting are considered as defense mechanisms when threatening toxins/drugs/bacteria/viruses/fungi enter the body either via the enteral (e.g., the gastrointestinal tract) or parenteral routes, including the blood, skin, and respiratory systems. While vomiting is the act of forceful removal of gastrointestinal contents, nausea is believed to be a subjective sensation that is more difficult to study in nonhuman species. In

Necroulcerative hemorrhagic gastritis in a cat secondary to the administration of 3% hydrogen peroxide as an emetic agent.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of necroulcerative gastritis in a cat secondary to administration of 3% hydrogen peroxide as an emetic agent. CASE SUMMARY: A 10-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair was evaluated for hematemesis less than 24 hours following ingestion of a piece of foam. The pet owner had administered 2 doses of 0.5-1.0 tablespoons (7.5-15 mL) of 3% hydrogen peroxide in an attempt to induce emesis at home; emesis was achieved and produced the foam foreign body. Due to the presence of protracted vomiting and hematemesis, the patient was then presented to an emergency facility

Weekly cisplatin (30-40 mg/m2) as radiosensitizer: Is it high or moderate emetic agent?

PURPOSE: The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) guideline recommends a high antiemetic prophylaxis for any dose of cisplatin. This hypothesis was tested by us in this analysis of solid tumor patients who received weekly cisplatin as a radiosensitizer in a dose range of 30-40 mg/m2. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of 181 solid tumor patients who received weekly cisplatin (in the dose range of 30-40 mg/m2) as a radiosensitizer between July 2015 and August 2015. The antiemetic prophylaxis schedule provided was classified as optimal (if a high antiemetic prophylaxis was provi

Potato crop as a source of emetic Bacillus cereus and cereulide-induced mammalian cell toxicity.

Bacillus cereus, aseptically isolated from potato tubers, were screened for cereulide production and for toxicity on human and other mammalian cells. The cereulide-producing isolates grew slowly, the colonies remained small (~1 mm), tested negative for starch hydrolysis, and varied in productivity from 1 to 100 ng of cereulide mg (wet weight)(-1) (~0.01 to 1 ng per 10(5) CFU). By DNA-fingerprint analysis, the isolates matched B. cereus F5881/94, connected to human food-borne illness, but were distinct from cereulide-producing endophytes of spruce tree (Picea abies). Exposure to cell extracts (

Enhanced gastric retention of solid resin beads as a marker for emetic potential of agents in rats.

Whereas nausea and emesis are burdensome side effects that lead to poor treatment compliance especially in chemotherapy, it is difficult to predict the emetic potential of agents in rats and mice because rodents do not vomit. We examined the effect of emetics on gastric retention and role of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT)<inf>3</inf> receptor in chemotherapeutic-induced enhancement of gastric retention in rats. The gastric retention of solid material was determined using resin beads, which were suitable to beads made with metals or glasses in size, hardness and weight. Each rat was oral

Guamanian Suncus murinus responsiveness to emetic stimuli and the antiemetic effects of 8-OH-DPAT.

The Japanese Suncus murinus, the house musk shrew, is a small insectivore commonly used in emetic research. The Guamanian S. murinus has not had extensive testing as an emetic model, but it is readily available for use in emetic experiments in the United States, unlike the Japanese Suncus. This study determined that Guamanian S. murinus is an acceptable model for emesis research and its differences from the Japanese strain were examined. Motion and nicotine were used as emetic stimuli and comparable doses of 8-OH-DPAT were used to compare emetic susceptibility to the Japanese strain. The Guama

The potential for mu-opioid receptor agonists to be anti-emetic in humans: a review of clinical data.

In animal models of vomiting, mu-opioid (MOP, OP(3)) receptors mediate both emesis and anti-emesis. mu-receptors within the blood-brain barrier, mediating anti-emesis, are more rapidly accessible to lipid-soluble mu-opioid receptor agonists such as fentanyl than to morphine, and fentanyl has broad-spectrum anti-emetic effects in a number of species. Whether a similar situation exists in humans is not known. A search was performed for clinical studies comparing the emetic side effects of opioids administered peri-operatively in an attempt to identify differences between morphine and more lipid-

The relationship between patient risk factors and early versus late postoperative emetic symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) remain common complications after elective surgery. Prophylactic antiemetic drugs are frequently administered to patients with well known risk factors for developing PONV. We designed this prospective observational study to assess the relationship between common patient risk factors for developing PONV and the occurrence of early (0-24 h) versus late (24-72 h) emetic symptoms. METHODS: One hundred thirty patients undergoing elective laparoscopic (n = 88) or plastic (n = 42) surgery were assigned a risk score for developing PONV based on the
