Persistent left ventricular disease in clinically "cured" primary endocardial fibroelastosis.

We studied by serial cardiac catheterisation eight patients with the dilated form of primary endocardial fibroelastosis in whom congestive heart failure disappeared with treatment. All remained without symptoms for at least three years before recatheterization. Four patients showed regression of the abnormal electrocardiographic findings, three showed persistence, and one showed progression of electrocardiographic left ventricular overload pattern. On first cardiac catheterisation all patients had a dilated left ventricle with a mean ejection fraction of 0.36. In six of the patients repeat car…

Endocardial fibroelastosis in children with special reference to the lesions of cardiac ganglia.

In all cases of primary endocardial fibroelastosis investigated diffuse degenerative changes in the ganglion cells were detected. Thickened endocardium was formed by the proliferation of mesenchymal cells located under the endothelial endocardium and of the mesenchyme surrounding the necrobiotic muscle cells. In some cases ;axial' vacuolar degeneration, necrobiosis, and necrosis of muscle cells, interstitial oedema, and dilatation of capillaries and lymphatic spaces were found in the whole myocardium. In all cases these changes were in the subendocardial layer. In the cases discussed morphologi…

Endocardial fibroelastosis in infants and young children: a state-of-the-art review.

Endocardial fibroelastosis (EFE) is a rare cardiac condition characterized by excessive endocardial thickening secondary to fibroelastic tissues that commonly present in infants and young children. Most of endocardial fibroelastosis cases are secondary forms, which occur in conjunction with other cardiac diseases. Endocardial fibroelastosis has been associated with poor prognosis and outcomes. In light of recent advancements in understanding pathophysiology, several new data have revealed compelling evidence that abnormal endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition is the root cause of endocardial f…
