BACKGROUND: Anal endosonography reliably visualizes and identifies anal sphincter abnormalities. However, dedicated probes are quite expensive. We report the case of a 72-year-old woman hospitalized for dysphagia and odynophagia due to an ulcer of the esophagus. Thoracic CT-scan and esophageal endosonography revealed a tumour of the mediastinum which invaded the esophagus. Per-operative biopsies concluded to a probable malignant fibrous histiocytoma.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcome of laparoscopic rectopexy and its effect on anorectal function investigations.
METHODS: Twelve patients with complete rectal prolapse without constipation underwent laparoscopic rectopexy. Pre- and postoperative evaluation included scoring of incontinence, anorectal manometry, and anal endosonography.

AIM: To determine the impact of anorectal function evaluation (AFE) on patients and referring specialists.

Endoscopic ultrasonography is firmly established as an imaging modality that can be used for diagnosing and staging both malignant and nonmalignant disorders of the pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, biliary tree, and mediastinum. In the future, as more physicians are trained and as technologic developments continue to advance, endosonography will likely assume a greater role in therapeutic management.

Congenital oesophageal stenosis is a very rare disease that commonly occurs in infancy with male predominance. This report describes a highly unusual case of congenital oesophageal stenosis extended throughout the length of the oesophagus, without webs or tracheobronchial remnants in the oesophageal wall, with normal oesophageal motility and normal endosonography in an adult female.

Anorectal endosonography is established as a diagnostic tool in anorectal fistulas, today. Yet, there is still little experience with the use of this method in small children. We could visualize three intershincteric fistulas in children at an age of 6, 7 and 14 months. The procedure is well tolerated and even children under the age of one year can be examined with a special probe.

A unique case involving a 65-year-old woman with recurrent hormone-positive, HER-2-negative breast cancer stage IV (T2N2M1) with known metastases to the bone presented with worsening dysphagia and esophageal wall thickening on imaging masquerading as achalasia. However, endosonography (EUS)-guided biopsy of the esophagus wall demonstrated metastatic breast cancer to the esophagus causing pseudoachalasia.

A patient with von Recklinghausen syndrome presented with multiple attacks of pancreatitis. Evaluation using computed tomography, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, and endosonography revealed an ampullary carcinoid. The patient underwent a pylorus-sparing Whipple resection, and is doing well after 30 months of follow-up. This is the second reported case of ampullary carcinoid presenting with pancreatitis in a patient with von Recklinghausen syndrome.
