In the early 1820s, a Yorkshire boarding school was devastated by an outbreak of blinding ophthalmia. The cause of the epidemic was-in all l … marily to cope with Egyptian ophthalmia. We explore trachoma's wide-ranging impact on pre-Victorian England, from inspiring an enduring literary villain to the creation of a renowned eye hospital.

The current Ebola virus epidemic continues to pose a threat to the UK. Junior clinicians are often at the frontline of medical care in hospitals and their awareness of the clinical features and management of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) may significantly influence the timely implementation of infection control measures. In view of this, we carried out a cross-sectional survey of 119 junior doctors across four different hospitals in England in order to assess their level of knowledge of EVD. We demonstrate that there is currently a deficiency of knowledge about critical aspects of EVD in this …

In 1631, Richard Brathwaite penned a conduct manual for 'English Gentlewomen'. In Brathwaite's mind, the ideal English gentlewoman was not only chaste, modest and honourable but also an avid reader. In fact, Brathwaite specifically recommends English gentlewomen to first peruse herbals and then to deepen their medical knowledge via conference. Centred on the manuscript notebooks of two late seventeenth-century women, Margaret Boscawen (d. 1688) and Elizabeth Freke (1642-1714), this article explores women and 'medical reading' in early modern England. It first demonstrates that whilst both wome…

INTRODUCTION: Head injury is an important cause of death and disability in young people, with 1.4 million presentations each year in the UK.( 1 ) Extradural haematoma (EDH) is a potentially fatal head injury, which is easily remedied surgically. Several factors influence the mortality of EDH. The mortality of isolated EDH ranges from 1.2 to 33%.( 12 , 16 , 19 , 28 ) EDH outcome within the UK has not been recently described.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN) database was used to collate data on patients in England and Wales, with 'isolated' EDH between 1997 an…

BACKGROUND: To explore time trends in deaths attributable to work in England and Wales, and identify priorities for prevention, we conducted a proportional analysis of mortality by occupation over a 22-year period.
METHODS: Analysis was based on deaths in men aged 20-74 years during 1979-1980 and 1982-2000 with a recorded occupation. Proportional mortality ratios, standardised for age and social class, were calculated for pre-specified combinations of occupation and cause of death, for which excess mortality could reasonably be attributed to work. Differences between observed and expected num…

The presence of haemoparasites belonging to the taxa Anaplasma, Bartonella and Trypanosoma was determined among 76 common shrews (Sorex araneus) from Northwest England. Anaplasma phagocytophilum DNA was recovered from the blood of 1 shrew (1.3%), with the amplified 16S rRNA sequence identical to one previously reported from a bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus). Trypanosoma spp. DNA was detected in 9 shrews (11.8%), the amplified 18S rDNA fragments being indistinguishable from one another, and distinct from previously published data. This represents the first report of trypanosome infection in…

Since new drinking water regulations were implemented in England and Wales in 2000, cryptosporidiosis has been significantly reduced in the first half of the year but not in the second. We estimate an annual reduction in disease of 905 reported cases and approximately 6,700 total cases.

BACKGROUND: The annual number of childhood injury admissions to New England hospitals decreased by more than half from 1991 through 2000. This study was undertaken to determine whether this decrease was caused by decreased injury incidence or changes in the diagnosis and/or management of childhood injury.
METHODS: Patients younger than 16 years of age with an injury diagnosis code were extracted from the New England Pediatric Trauma Database and an Injury Severity Score and hospital-specific variables were assigned. U.S. Census Bureau age-specific population estimates were used to generate po…

In response to a marked increase in both the number of Fusobacterium necrophorum bacteraemia reports to the PHLS Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre and the number of F. necrophorum isolates referred to the PHLS Anaerobe Reference Unit in 1999, the data from both sources on F. necrophorum infections were reviewed for the decade 1990-2000. There were 208 reports of F. necrophorum bacteraemia (average 19/year; range 14-34/year) with a peak in incidence in the late winter months; 68% were from male patients and the peak age range was 16-23 years. Of 205 referred isolates of F. necrophorum, 1

Although the use of olfactory cues in pigeon navigation is well established, the generality of olfactory navigation remains uncertain because of apparent variability in results gained by different researchers in different regions. We report the results of the first experiments investigating the effect of anosmia on homing pigeons reared in a previously uninvestigated region, southern England. In series 1, experienced birds showed little effect of anosmia induced with zinc sulphate at unfamiliar sites 30 km and 39 km from the loft, but treated birds were significantly poorer than controls at ho…

An assessment of the presence and patterns of porotic hyperostosis and periosteal reactions in the skeletal population (n = 1,014) from St. Helen-on-the-Walls, York, are used to examine health and disease in urban medieval England. The analyses of these two lesions indicate that 58% of the population display evidence of porotic hyperostosis and that 21.5% of the population display periosteal reactions. Through differential diagnosis it is asserted that porotic hyperostosis is associated with iron-deficiency anemia, and that periosteal reactions may be the result of endemic treponematosis and/o…

Endocarditis was recorded in 92 (11%) of 839 confirmed Q-fever infections reported for the Communicable Disease Report by laboratories between 1975 and 1981; Q-fever endocarditis accounted for approximately 3% of all cases of endocarditis reported. Two-thirds of the 92 reports were of men, and in both men and women endocarditis affected mainly young and middle-aged adults. Only one-third of Q-fever endocarditis patients were noted to have an underlying heart-valve lesion. There were also 30 reports of chronic Q-fever infection, and in 10 the primary clinical feature was liver disease. The labo

Both direct and indirect evidence implies that England experienced a lengthy period of stagnant or declining population during the later fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The Black Death of 1348-1349 had brought about profound changes in England's agrarian economy, and this subsequent demographic depression is most commonly interpreted by historians as the result of plague mortality, recurring in severe outbreaks after the disease's introduction into the country. This paper reviews the evidence and assumptions behind this interpretation, in light of recent research by historical demographers…
