Single stool specimens collected from 1,020 apparently healthy people of the South Kanara District, were processed for intestinal parasites using three parasitological methods viz. (a) Direct smear in physiological saline and D'Antoni's iodine, (b) Zinc sulfate concentration method and (c) by culture in modified Boek and Drbolhav medium. To examine whether Entamoeba histolytica is the cause of a variety of intestinal disorders, as often implicated, a two-part study was conducted. In part 1, 184 patients attending a gastroenterology clinic and needing a sigmoidoscopy had a rectal biopsy specimen and a stool sample cultured for E histolytica. A 58-year-old Danish male was admitted to hospital with acute abdominal pain. Laparoscopy showed a normal appendix. However, a tumour in the ascending colon was found and hemicolectomy was performed. Pathological examination showed deep ulcerations with undermined edges and massive inflammation and necrosis. Periodic acid Schiff (PAS)-positive amoebae trophozoites were identified, and the patient was diagnosed with and treated for amoebiasis.
