Comparison of miRNA profiles in the immune response of pediatric acute appendicitis and pediatric enterobiasis patients caused by Enterobius vermicularis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine and compare the miRNA profile in the immune response with the parasite in pediatric patients with acute appendicitis caused by Enterobius vermicularis and in pediatric patients with enterobiasis. METHODS: A total of 30 tissue samples, which were operated with the diagnosis of pediatric acute appendicitis in the last 10 y and Enterobius vermicularis was detected by histopathological findings, were analyzed. In addition, blood samples were taken from 30 pediatric patients diagnosed with enterobiasis for this study. The miRNAs that activate T an…

Studies on the significance of secretory IgA antibodies in the pathogenesis and clinical course of enterobiasis in infected persons from Bulgaria: preliminary findings.

Enterobiasis is one of the most common human parasitic infections worldwide and in Bulgaria. The objective of this study was to ascertain the levels of intestinal secretory IgA antibodies in patients with enterobiasis, to determine the local immune response in this helminthiasis, and to evaluate its influence on clinical manifestations during infection. Faecal samples from 102 enterobiasis patients and 40 clinically healthy controls were examined. In individuals infected with Enterobius vermicularis, the range of values for SIgA was higher (from 27.5 μg/ml to 13916 μg/ml). However, no statisti…

Effect of a one-off educational session about enterobiasis on knowledge, preventative practices, and infection rates among schoolchildren in South Korea.

Although health education has proven to be cost-effective in slowing the spread of enterobiasis, assessments of the effectiveness of health education to reduce infectious diseases specifically in children are rare. To evaluate the effect of health education on knowledge, preventative practices, and the prevalence of enterobiasis, 319 children from 16 classes were divided into experimental and control groups. Data were collected from May 2012 to March 2013. A 40-minute in-class talk was given once in the experimental group. There were significant differences over the time in the mean scores for…

Enterobiasis and strongyloidiasis and associated co-infections and morbidity markers in infants, preschool- and school-aged children from rural coastal Tanzania: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of data pertaining to the epidemiology and public health impact of Enterobius vermicularis and Strongyloides stercoralis infections. We aimed to determine the extent of enterobiasis, strongyloidiasis, and other helminth infections and their association with asymptomatic Plasmodium parasitaemia, anaemia, nutritional status, and blood cell counts in infants, preschool-aged (PSAC), and school-aged children (SAC) from rural coastal Tanzania. METHODS: A total of 1,033 children were included in a cross-sectional study implemented in the Bagamoyo district in 2011/2012.…

Enterobius vermicularis infection among children aged 1-8 years in a rural area in Malaysia.

The infection rate and relationship of enterobiasis with socio-economic status were determined in children aged 1-8 years, living in a rural area in Malaysia. Of the 178 subjects 40.4% were infected with Enterobius vermicularis. The distribution of enterobiasis among these children were analyzed in relation to age groups and sex. The rate of infection was significantly higher in older children (5-7 years). The association of enterobiasis with other factors studied such as number of persons per house, household income per months and mother's employment status were not significant. The sensitivi…

Clinicopathological Assesment in Patients with Enterobius vermicularis Infection.

OBJECTIVE: Enterobius vermicularis is a common gastrointestinal parasite. Acute appendicitis is one of the most common clinical conditions requiring surgical intervention. The coexistence of enterobiasis and acute appendicitis has attracted the attention of researchers for a long time. In this article, it is aimed to present the characteristics of enterobiasis cases detected in appendectomy specimens in a tertiary healthcare institution. In addition, it is aimed to reveal the differences by comparing the cases diagnosed with acute appendicitis without enterobiasis. METHODS: All cases operated…

A case of enterobiasis presenting as post-traumatic-stress-disorder (PTSD): a curious case of the infection with predominant mental health symptoms, presenting for the first time in the settings of a refugee camp.

Enterobiasis (oxyuriasis) is a common infection in human caused by Enterobius vermicularis (E. vermicularis), a human intestinal helminth. Because of the easy way of its transmission among people, it has an extremely high prevalence in overcrowded conditions, such as nurseries and primary schools. Oxyuriasis's symptoms are extremely diverse in children, ranging from nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, irritability, recurrent cellulitis, loss of appetite, nightmares and endometritis. Here we report a curious case of oxyuriasis in the settings of a refugee camp in Greece. The patient was a 10-year old S…

Atypical presentation of Enterobius vermicularis in a cognitively impaired elderly patient: A case report.

Enterobius vermicularis infection (enterobiasis) is a common intestinal parasitosis, typically characterized by perianal pruritus, and is most prevalent in children. Diagnosing enterobiasis in cognitively impaired individuals, who may not report typical symptoms, poses a diagnostic challenge. We report the case of an 86-year-old Japanese woman with cognitive impairment who was admitted for a tibial fracture. During a routine diaper change, several motile, thread-like organisms were incidentally observed in her perianal and perivaginal areas. Microscopic examination identified the organisms as …

Enterobius Vermicularis Infections in Iraq.

Enterobiasis continues to be among the highest parasitic infections affecting the human population worldwide. A study was conducted between 2011 - 2015 in Iraq to evaluate the enterobiasis reported by the Communicable Diseases Control Center (n=220,607 cases) in relation to demographic (age, sex, rural population and family size) and spatial variables (local and regional sources). Females were more parasitized than males, as well as children and youth ages 4 to 15. Approximately 40 % of cases are from the South region provinces (Thiqar, Miasan, Basrah and Wassit). However, most cases occurred …

Pinworm infestation of the genital tract.

Extraintestinal enterobiasis has been reported in the vagina, endometrium, myometrium, ovary, fallopian tube and pelvic peritoneum. Gravid female pinworms may migrate from the perianal area to the vagina, ascend through the genital tract and exit through the fallopian tube to the peritoneum. Ectopic enterobiasis seldom causes clinical symptoms, but chronic granuloma formation may simulate other mass lesions in the pelvis.

Peripheral Eosinophilia Found in Pediatric Enterobius vermicularis Infections.

Enterobius vermicularis, the common pinworm, is well known in North America as a parasitic infection, mainly affecting children. It is a very contagious organism, and it is responsible for a high number of infections in the United States each year. A rise in eosinophilia is linked to most parasitic infections. However, the correlation between eosinophilia and enterobiasis infections is not well documented in the literature. In this article, we present 3 cases involving patients seen for pediatric gastroenterology consultation with concern for inflammatory bowel disease. As part of their evalua…

Mebendazole in parasitic infections other than those caused by soil-transmitted helminths.

Mebendazole, a benzimidazole carbamate compound, is currently in use for human medical practice against soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) and enterobiasis. However, it has been demonstrated that its spectrum of activity is broad and goes beyond those infections. Several studies provide evidence that this drug, taken at higher doses than used for STH and enterobiasis, could be sufficiently effective on some protozoa, nematodes and cestodes.

[Enterobius vermicularis causing symptoms of acute appendicitis].

The authors present a case of enterobiasis of the appendix. Enterobius infection is an uncommon cause of acute appendicitis. Preoperative diagnosis of pinworm infestation is almost impossible unless there is a strong clinical suspicion. Parasites may produce symptoms which resemble acute appendicitis. Careful observation of the appendix stump may lead to intraoperative diagnosis of enterobiasis. A quick diagnosis and appropriate treatment may prevent future complications.

[The achievements and outlook in the control of helminthiases in Bulgaria].

The paper describes organization and achievements of the struggle against human helminthiases over a 30-year period in Bulgaria. Over this period, in Bulgaria Taenia solium was eradicated, while the incidence of taeniasis, ascariasis, trichocephaliasis, hymenolepiasis, enterobiasis and ascariasis, trichocephaliasis, hymenolepiasis, enterobiasis and echinococcosis was reduced several-fold. The authors suggest effective measures for the struggle against other helminthiases in the following 5-10 years.

Recurrent paediatric pinworm infection of the vagina as a potential reservoir for Enterobius vermicularis.

Enterobius vermicularis infection remains one of the most common parasitic infections, particularly prevalent in children. Enterobiasis, although not usually dangerous, may cause significant morbidity. Elimination of the parasite from a family or an institution often poses problems, either because of an incomplete cure or re-infection. While there have been limited reports of ectopic enterobiasis throughout the world, ours is probably one of the rarest reports of recurrent vaginal E. vermicularis infection in the absence of any gastrointestinal symptoms despite complete treatment. A 4-year-old…
