Current understanding of environmental exposures and sarcoidosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sarcoidosis is a heterogeneous disease with unknown etiology. The role of exposures in sarcoidosis is incompletely understood. Gene-environment interactions are likely an important aspect of sarcoidosis etiology and phenotypes. This review critically evaluates the current literature regarding the role of environmental factors in sarcoidosis. RECENT FINDINGS: Environmental factors are likely a key aspect of the pathophysiology of sarcoidosis; identifying these factors is an important and active part of sarcoidosis research, with implications for early identification and pote

Environmental Neurotoxins Are Driving the Neurodegeneration Panpidemic.

The world is suffering a pandemic of neurodevelopment and neurodegenerative disorders. Autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, dementia, Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease-the list is long-have all increased relentlessly the past few decades. The primary cause appears to be the saturation of the environment with microbial, chemical, and metal neurotoxins. This editorial reviews the research on commonly found neurotoxins and attempts to assess their contribution to neurodegeneration and its prevalence in the population.

The environmental impact of extracellular matrix preparation.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a network of proteins and other molecules that encase and support cells and tissues in the body. As clinical and biotechnological uses of ECM are expanding, it is essential to assess the environmental impact associated with its production. Due to high levels of customization, various laboratories employ distinct methods; therefore, this study evaluates three common protocols. Life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology has been developed to evaluate the environmental impacts of products produced through diverse processes. Despite its widespread application in the

The Role of Dietary Supplements in Environmental Challenges.

Environmental challenges such as rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations, changes in climate patterns, and heightened frequency and severity of extreme weather events are presenting multifaceted and compounding threats to nutrition and nutrition-related health outcomes. This perspective paper identifies the following 3 critical research gaps at the intersection of dietary supplements and environmental challenges: 1) addressing nutrient deficiencies caused by environmental threats; 2) enhancing biological resilience to environmental stressors; and 3) altering environmental impacts thro

Understanding the Opioid Epidemic as an Environmental Injustice.

The conceptual link between racial disparities in opioid use-related deaths and environmental justice, a valuable socioecologic paradigm for contextualizing how racial vulnerabilities are ecologically forged, has not been duly explored. Exploring and filling this gap, this article highlights four primary ways through which racial disparities in opioid use manifest as a matter of environmental (in)justice, namely in terms of (1) distributive justice (elevated availability and criminalization of opioids in racially minoritized communities), (2) capability justice (limited access to or uptake of

Fibromyalgia: are you a genetic/environmental disease?

Fibromyalgia, characterized by chronic widespread pain and fatigue, involves complex interactions between genetic predispositions and environmental triggers. This review delves into the multifaceted nature of fibromyalgia, emphasizing recent advances in understanding its pathogenesis through genetic, epigenetic, and environmental lenses. We explore the roles of specific genetic polymorphisms, such as those in the catechol-O-methyltransferase and serotonin transporter genes, and their correlation with the syndrome's susceptibility. The review also examines the significant impact of environmenta

Environmental factors affecting female fertility.

INTRODUCTION: Over the recent years, scientific community has increased its interest on solving problems of female fertility pathology. Many factors acting separately or in combination affect significantly the reproductive life of a woman. This review summarizes current evidence regarding the direct and/or indirect action of environmental factors and endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs; i.e. heavy metals, plasticizers, parabens, industrial chemicals, pesticides, or medications, by-products, anti-bacterial agents, perfluorochemicals) upon assisted and non-assisted female fertility, extracted f

Social and environmental stressors of cardiometabolic health.

Exposures to social and environmental stressors arise individual behavioural response and thus indirectly affect cardiometabolic health. The aim of this study was to investigate several social and environmental stressors and the paths of their influence on cardiometabolic health. The data of 2154 participants (aged 25-64 years) from the cross-sectional population-based study were analysed. The composite score of metabolic disorders (MS score) was calculated based on 5 biomarkers: waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides. The effects of social s

Toxicity Tolerance in the Carcinogenesis of Environmental Cadmium.

Cadmium (Cd) is an environmental toxicant of worldwide public health significance. Diet is the main non-workplace Cd exposure source other than passive and active smoking. The intestinal absorption of Cd involves transporters for essential metals, notably iron and zinc. These transporters determine the Cd body burden because only a minuscule amount of Cd can be excreted each day. The International Agency for Research on Cancer listed Cd as a human lung carcinogen, but the current evidence suggests that the effects of Cd on cancer risk extend beyond the lung. A two-year bioassay demonstrated th

Environmental factors and stroke: Risk and prevention.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and adult disability globally. In addition to traditional risk factors, environmental risk factors have emerged over the recent past and are becoming increasingly important. The disproportionate rise of stroke incidence in low- and middle-income countries has been attributed, at least in part, to environmental factors. This narrative review provides details on the interplay between the environment and health generally and stroke specifically, covering topics including air pollution, atmospheric brown clouds, desert dust storms, giant wildfires, chemical conta

Cyanobacterial blooms, iron, and environmental pollutants.

Iron determines the abundance and diversity of life and controls primary production in numerous aqueous environments. Over the past decades, the availability of this metal in natural waters has decreased. Iron deficiency can apply a selective pressure on microbial aquatic communities. Each aquatic organism has their individual requirements for iron and pathways for metal acquisition, despite all having access to the common pool of iron. Cyanobacteria, a photosynthesizing bacterium that can accumulate and form so-called 'algal blooms', have evolved strategies to thrive in such iron-deficient aq

Environmental influences on childhood asthma: Allergens.

Allergen exposure is associated with the development of allergen-specific sensitization, but their relationship is influenced by other contemporaneous exposures (such as microbial exposure) and the genetic predisposition of the host. Clinical outcomes of the primary prevention studies that tested the effectiveness of allergen avoidance in pregnancy and early life on the subsequent development of sensitization and asthma published to date are inconsistent. Therefore, we cannot provide any evidence-based advice on the use of allergen avoidance for the primary prevention of these conditions. The

Heat, Cold, and Environmental Emergencies in Athletes.

With the increase in outdoor events, there is an inevitable rise in climate-related environmental emergencies. Heat exposure can place athletes at risk for life-threatening heatstroke which requires emergent diagnosis and rapid in-field management. Cold exposure can lead to hypothermia, frostbite, and other nonfreezing injuries that require prompt evaluation and management to minimize morbidity and mortality. Altitude exposure can lead to acute mountain sickness or other serious neurologic or pulmonary emergencies. Finally, harsh climate exposure can be life-threatening and require appropriate

Environmental Causes of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), the most common and severe of the idiopathic interstitial pneumonias, is a chronic and relentlessly progressive disease, which occurs mostly in middle-aged and elderly males. Although IPF is by definition "idiopathic", multiple factors have been reported to increase disease risk, aging being the most prominent one. Several occupational and environmental exposures, including metal dust, wood dust and air pollution, as well as various lifestyle variables, including smoking and diet, have also been associated with an increased risk of IPF, probably through int

The Impact of Environmental Toxins on Cardiovascular Diseases.

Environmental toxins pose significant risks to human health and are considered major contributors to chronic diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Numerous studies have highlighted the detrimental impact of environmental toxicity on cardiovascular health. The primary sources of environmental toxins include pollutants containing particulate matter and organic substances, such as sulfate, nitrates, ammonium, elemental carbon, crystal elements, arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and Bisphenol A (BPA). Epidemiological research has closely monitored the link between environm

Environmental factors affecting pregnancy outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy represents a fragile period in the life of a woman, vulnerable to hazardous environmental substances which might affect maternal and fetal metabolism. The possible influence of environmental factors, including endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), upon the mother and the fetus before and/or during pregnancy might be associated directly and/or indirectly to deleterious pregnancy outcomes. Because the existence of such associations would be, to our view, of major importance to the scientific community, their investigation is the scope of this critical review. METHODS: T
