[Epidemiology of and risk factors for bladder cancer and for urothelial tumors].

Bladder cancer is the 5th most commonly diagnosed cancer in France, and most of cases occur in men and patients aged more than 65 years. The incidence and mortality are declining except in women in whom the incidence is increasing in recent years. Urothelial tumors of the upper urinary tract are less common but have similar aetiology to the bladder tumours. The recurrent aspect of superficial tumors and the morbidity of invasive tumors are an economic burden in the Western health systems. The two main risk factors for urothelial tumors are tobacco smoking and occupational exposure to chemicals

Melanoma: epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenesis, diagnosis and classification.

This article reviews epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenesis and diagnosis of melanoma. Data on melanoma from the majority of countries show a rapid increase of the incidence of this cancer, with a slowing of the rate of incidence in the period 1990-2000. Males are approximately 1.5-times more likely to develop melanoma than females, while according to other studies, the different prevalence in both sexes must be analyzed in relation with age: the incidence rate of melanoma is grater in women than men until they reach the age of 40 years, however, by 75 years of age, the incidence is almost 3

Epidemiology, risk factors and management of cardiovascular diseases in IBD.

IBD is an established risk factor for venous thromboembolism. In the past few years, studies have suggested that patients with IBD might also be at an increased risk of coronary heart disease and stroke. The increased risk is thought to be similar to the level of risk seen in patients with other chronic systemic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. The risk of developing these conditions is particularly increased in young adults with IBD, and more so in women than in men. Conventional cardiovascular risk factors are not over-represented in patients with IBD, so the increased ris

Epidemiology, risk factors and management of paediatric diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a common complication of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, is rarely expressed at a level greater than background retinopathy during childhood and adolescence. Epidemiological studies in paediatric diabetic patients together with data from the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial have demonstrated the importance of glycaemic control in delaying or preventing the development of DR; thus, the incidence of DR has declined somewhat over the past two decades. Both prepubertal and postpubertal years with diabetes contribute to the overall probability of DR development.

Changing epidemiology of nonsyndromic craniosynostosis and revisiting the risk factors.

Recent studies in Europe and the United States report increased incidence of metopic synostosis. Whether a similar trend had occurred in Australia remains unknown. This research aimed to determine changes in incidence and subtypes of craniosynostosis in Victoria and to identify perinatal risk factors. A retrospective audit of patients (n = 522) presenting to the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne with nonsyndromic craniosynostosis from 1982 to 2008 was undertaken. Perinatal data were sourced from the Victorian Perinatal Data Collection. The changes in incidence of craniosynostosis subtypes

Ectopic pregnancy: History, incidence, epidemiology, and risk factors.

Ectopic pregnancy is directly related to tubal infection, and so prevention of chlamydia and gonorrhea must be the watchword to lower its risk and incidence. With accurate determination of very low human chorionic gonadotropin concentrations and sonography, >85% of women are diagnosed before tubal rupture, which has led to medical therapy and laparoscopic surgery with tubal preservation and the potential for future fertility. Today, early intervention saves lives and reduces morbidity, but ectopic pregnancy still accounts for 4% to 10% of pregnancy-related deaths and leads to a high incidence

Epidemiology and risk factors for osteonecrosis of the jaw in cancer patients.

Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), previously an entity associated with radiation therapy to the head and neck, has been observed in patients treated with bisphosphonates. Patients with metastatic breast cancer and myelomatous bone disease, commonly treated with high-potency nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates for a prolonged period of time, have the greatest risk of ONJ development. The reported frequency of ONJ ranges from 0.6% to 6.2% in breast cancer and from 1.7% to 15% in patients with multiple myeloma. Osteonecrosis of the jaw has also been observed in patients with other cancers such as p

Epidemiology of hip fracture in Japan: incidence and risk factors.

Hip fracture is the most serious complication of osteoporosis and has been recognized as a major public health problem. The prevention of hip fractures is an high-priority issue because of the rapid increase of the number of elderly people in Japan. The General Research Committee for the Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis in Silver Health Science Researches sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (Director, Hajime Orimo) first undertook a nationwide survey of femoral neck fracture in 1987. This nationwide survey has been continued every 5 years, in 1992, 1997, and 2002. The total

[Epidemiology of ectopic pregnancy: incidence, risk factors and outcomes].

Two entities must be differentiated in ectopic pregnancy (EP) epidemiology: EP occurring in women without contraception (reproductive failure) and with contraception (contraceptive failure). These two entities differ on almost all issues. After a great increase between 1970 and 1990, incidence of EP has decreased over the next 10 years. At the present time, the incidence of EP with contraception goes on decreasing while the incidence of EP without contraception is increasing. Three quarters of EP are ampullary, and 4.5% are extra-tubal. The two main risk factors for EP without contraception ar

Epidemiology of endocrine-related risk factors for breast cancer.

Ovarian and other hormones are major determinants of breast cancer risk. Particularly important is the accumulative exposure of the breast to circulating levels of the ovarian hormones estradiol and progesterone. A number of breast cancer risk factors can be understood in light of how they affect women's hormone profiles. Age is a marker for the onset and cessation of ovarian activity. Racial differences in hormone profiles correlate with breast cancer incidence patterns. Age at menarche not only serves as the chronological indicator of the onset of ovarian activity, but as a predictor of ovul

[Deep venous thrombosis: epidemiology, acquired risk factors].

Deep vein thrombosis is a frequent disease with an annual incidence reaching 5 per thousand among subjects over 75 years. Major acquired risk factors for venous thrombosis include surgery, neoplasm, reduced mobility or paresis, and a previous episode of deep vein thrombosis. Among women, hormonal status (pregnancy, oral contraceptive, hormone replacement therapy) is responsible for the majority of all venous thrombotic events. The impact of other factors is controversial: obesity, tobacco use and varicose veins. Venous thrombosis is a multifactorial disease and analysis of the interactions bet
