Theileria annulata is an obligate intracellular parasite that induces bovine leukocyte transformation leading to uncontrolled proliferation and heightened dissemination of infected leukocytes. Early passage T. annulata-transformed macrophages are virulent, but with long-term culture, they become attenuated for dissemination. To investigate this phenotype from an epigenetic perspective, we focused on the important repressive histone marks, tri-methylated lysine 27 of histone H3 (H3K27me3) catalyzed by the Polycomb Repressive Complex 2. ChIP-seq revealed that the genomic distribution of H3K27me3

Family members of the SET domain family (SETD) of histone lysine methyltransferases (HKMTs) act as principal epigenetic regulators, modulating chromatin structure, transcription pathways, and immune responses. SETDs catalyze lysine methylation on histone and non-histone substrates, as well as non-histone proteins (e.g., p53, NF-κB). These biochemical modifications support gene activity requisite for directing immune cells, modulating cytokine cascades, and inflammatory responses. For SETD family members, systemic dysregulation has become the principal mechanistic fulcrum within the orchestrati

Copper is one of the essential micronutrients utilized as a cofactor in a wide variety of biochemical reactions of metabolic pathways, including mitochondrial respiration and innate immune response. Cellular concentration and distribution of copper is regulated by copper-specific transporters, chaperones, metallothionein proteins and amino acids. Transcription of a major copper metallothionein, CUP1 is epigenetically regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Mutations in histones dysregulate cellular copper homeostasis due to abnormal epigenetic changes and cause diseases in humans, such as cance

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, refers to a refractive error of the eye that causes parallel rays of light to focus in front of the retina, affecting distance vision. High myopia significantly increases the risk of pathological myopia, leading to severe complications and an increased likelihood of myopia-related eye diseases. In recent decades, the incidence of myopia has continued to rise, posing significant social and human health issues. The complex interplay between genetic and environmental variables affects the development of myopia. Gene control depends to a large extent on epige

Congenital Heart Diseases (CHDs) are a heterogeneous group of structural abnormalities affecting the heart and major arteries, which are present in at least 1% of births worldwide. Studies have linked CHD to both genetic and environmental factors. In this regard, it has been demonstrated that changes in the epigenetic pattern impact the expression of key genes involved in proper cardiac development. Therefore, it is suggested that aberrant epigenetic mechanisms may contribute to the development of these pathologies. Here, we review and summarize the main epigenetic mechanisms involved in CHD.
