Tenascin is an extracellular matrix glycoprotein produced in response to epithelial-mesenchymal interactions that initiate fetal organogenesis, and it is also found in the stroma of benign and malignant neoplasms. Thirty-five human cell lines representing a variety of cancers were examined by immunoprecipitation and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of radiolabeled tenascin proteins from conditioned media. AIM: To report the previously undescribed occurrence of a lateral neck cyst, attached to the thyroid gland, containing pancreatic tissue.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 41-year-old man presented with a recurrent cystic lesion of the thyroid. At thyroidectomy cystic masses containing mucinous material were present in the neck, and there was a nodular lesion attached to the lower pole of the thyroid. Histological examination of the latter lesion revealed an epithelial lined cyst, with pancreatic tissue (exocrine and endocrine) in addition to fat, fibrous tissue, muscle and cartilage in the wall.

Using patch-clamp techniques, we have studied Ca2+-activated K+ channels in the basolateral membrane of freshly isolated epithelial cells from rabbit distal colon. Epithelial cell clusters were obtained from distal colon by gentle mechanical disruption of isolated crypts. Gigaohm seals were obtained on the basolateral surface of the cell clusters. At the resting potential (approximately -45 mV), with NaCl Ringer's bathing the cell, the predominant channels had a conductance of 131 +/- 25 pS. Channel activity depended on voltage as depolarization of the membrane increased the open probability.

Crown-lengthening surgery can be utilized to expose subgingival caries. In this clinical case, a patient presented with incomplete passive eruption in the maxillary anterior sextant. This case illustrates that when incomplete passive eruption is present and restorative treatment is necessary in the maxillary anterior sextant, crown-lengthening surgery not only provides exposure of subgingival caries but can also result in a more esthetic therapeutic outcome.

The aim of this SEM-study was to obtain a quantitative analysis for comparing the extent of root resorption in orthodontically treated teeth, in teeth with reduced periodontium and in healthy teeth. By using a statistically valid method the highest amount of root resorption was established in orthodontically moved teeth. The teeth with loss of attachment showed a significantly higher amount of root resorption than healthy teeth. This finding complicates orthodontic treatment in teeth with reduced periodontal attachment.
