A simulation model to quantify the efficacy of dry cleaning interventions on a contaminated milk powder line.

UNLABELLED: Outbreaks of Salmonella in low moisture foods have been caused by cross-contamination from the processing environment into product. We used Monte Carlo simulations to model the impact of hypothetical cross-contamination scenarios of Salmonella from production equipment into milk powder. Model outputs included the quantity and extent of the contaminated product from a production line. Outputs were used to compare the efficacy of cleaning interventions. Cross-contamination of potential dry cleaning surrogates was also modeled. Input parameters for the model included log reductions fr

Characterization of persistent Listeria monocytogenes strains from ten dry-cured ham processing facilities.

The majority of cases of listeriosis are associated with the consumption of contaminated food. Some strains of Listeria monocytogenes can persist over months or years in meat processing plants increasing the risk of product contamination. The presence of L. monocytogenes was examined in 10 dry-cured ham processing facilities. A total of 1801 samples were collected from environment and equipment, during processing (1095) and after cleaning and disinfection (706). These samples were taken from non-food contact (736) and food contact (1065) surfaces. In addition, 204 samples from ham surfaces wer

The occurrence of Staphylococcus aureus on a farm with small-scale production of raw milk cheese.

In recent years, the small-scale production of raw milk products has increased in Norway, and there is some concern that such foods may pose a risk of staphylococcal food poisoning to consumers. The aim of the study was to evaluate potential sources of contamination of raw milk cheese with Staphylococcus aureus on a bovine dairy farm with small-scale production. Samples for bacteriological analyses (n = 144) were collected from the animals, the environment, processing equipments, from humans, and from cheeses at various stages of production. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from 10 of 11 cow

How to manage the biological risk in a dental clinic: current and future perspectives.

Dental personnel (DP) may be exposed to pathogens during dental treatment, either through contact contaminated equipment, or with blood and respiratory secretion. On the other hand, health care professionals are constantly exposed to pathogens and opportunists in their work environment. Consequently, the dental healthcare environment is connected with the risk of exposure to biological agents both for patients and dental workers, and involves a wide number of microorganisms that can be present in biological matrices (gingival fluids, saliva, blood), contaminated and/or non-sanitized surfaces,

[Microbial contamination of wind instruments and associated pulmonary diseases].

Pulmonary diseases of musicians who play wind instruments that may be caused by microbial contamination of the instruments tend to be underestimated. The aerosols and microdroplets from the respiratory tract that enter the wind instrument when playing music contain both non-pathogenic and pathogenic microbes. Microbiological studies have shown a higher contamination of vital bacteria, fungi, and/or yeast in woodwind instruments compared to metal instruments.Although there are some signs of increased incidence of respiratory diseases in wind instrument players, the detection of potential pathog

Handmade Draping System for Tabletop Microscopes in Wet Lab Training.

BACKGROUND: Wet lab training using a tabletop microscope and chicken wings is an effective way to master superfine surgical techniques, providing a wet environment with real blood vessels that closely replicates surgical conditions. However, concerns remain regarding soiling of expensive microscopes with proteins and blood from raw meat, which can be difficult to remove once dried and may compromise the optical system. Additionally, raw poultry introduces the risk of bacterial contamination such as Campylobacter spp., which is commonly found in retail poultry. Since the practice is often perfo

Unseen threats: Lumens 2.0 study reveals the hidden challenges of cleaning lumened surgical instruments.

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections can cause significant morbidity requiring lengthy antimicrobial treatment. Infections have been linked to surgical instruments with retained tissue and foreign debris, as the presence of blood or soil interferes with sterilization effectiveness. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of visible soil or debris inside instruments and evaluate the impact of recleaning efforts. METHODS: Borescopes were used to inspect lumens of instruments used for orthopedic, neurologic, or ear-nose-throat procedures. Whenever visible soil or debris was observed, the in

Bacterial contamination of sterile angiographic work environments during animal studies.

Bacterial contamination of angiographic materials and fluids has been shown to occur during human angiographic procedures. Angiographic examinations and experiments must be performed under sterile conditions to avoid complications due to contamination and possible subsequent infections. However, data regarding the frequency and the clinical consequences are limited. Our aim was to investigate the incidence of bacterial contamination during experimental angiographies. We tested angiographic fluids, syringes and endovascular materials from the angiographic supply tables for bacterial contaminati

Managing dental unit waterlines: a quality improvement programme.

The presence of bacterial biofilms within dental unit waterlines (DUWLs) can cause secondary bacterial infections in immunocompromised patients. As a result, the management of biofilms within waterlines has always concerned medical and dental professionals. In February 2020, an internal audit identified the high bacterial counts within the DUWLs at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi and this paper discusses a pragmatic approach to improving the water quality of DUWLs.A three-person committee was developed and the area for improvement was identified as the contaminated DUWLs. Distilled w
