Closed technique for naso-orbito-ethmoid fracture management: Technical note.

Trauma to the naso-orbito-ethmoid region invariably results in detachment of medial canthal tendon. The shape of medial canthus is of important esthetic and functional concern. Accurate reposition of the medial canthus is important to achieve normal form and function. The various available techniques advocate open approach leaving an obvious scar in the esthetically prominent region. This technique intends to address these fractures through a closed approach with the possibility to make finer adjustments as and when required. We report the experience of treating 4 naso-orbito-ethmoid fractures

Invasive malignant fibrous histiocytoma in a cow.

An invasive malignant fibrous histiocytoma associated with the left cornual process, and causing lysis of the frontal bone, was diagnosed in a cow. The mass compressed the left cerebral hemisphere focally and extended into the frontal sinus and ethmoid and nasal turbinates. It was composed of pleomorphic to spindle-shaped cells with ultra-structural evidence of fibroblastic, myofibroblastic, and fibrohistiocytic differentiation. Trauma and chronic inflammation may be predisposing factors for development of neoplasia in cattle.

Monozygotic twin aborted fetuses discordant for holoprosencephaly/synotia.

A pair of monozygotic twin fetuses aborted at 15 weeks were found to be discordant for holoprosencephaly and synotia. They were studied grossly, radiologically, and histologically. Features of first brancial arch dysplasia (synotia, agnathia, and astomia) and holoprosencephaly (absent ethmoid bone and Rathke's pouch) observed in one twin were contrasted with minimal dysmorphology in the co-twin. Some evidence of the twin transfusion syndrome was also apparent, perhaps contributing to the twins' spontaneous abortion.

[Recurrent purulent meningitis in traumatic lesions of the ethmoid (author's transl)].

A report is presented of two cases of recurrent meningitis (mainly pneumococcal meningitis with different serotypes). The different possible causes of recurrent meningitis are discussed. The key to diagnosis in recurrent meningitis caused by forgotten traumatic fracture of the ethmoid bone is X-ray investigation including tomography of this region. The prognosis is poor in infancy, but improves with increasing age of the child and is dependent on early diagnosis of the underlying causative process.

The normal uncinate process: histology and clinical relevance.

In this three-center, prospective, non-randomized, controlled trial, we performed a qualitative and quantitative histological and morphometric assessment of the normal uncinate process (UP). The soft tissue and bony elements of the normal UP of 16 adults were investigated and compared with 28 age- and gender-matched archival reference-group samples of neighboring structures of the inferior and middle turbinates. A series of measurements were taken and included the thickness of the mucosal layers and bone, epithelial height, basement membrane thickness, number of lamina propria inflammatory cel

Sinonasal Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumors Without Any Nasal Symptoms: A Case Report and Literature Review.

OBJECTIVE: We present a case of phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) in the left ethmoid without any nasal symptoms in a 63-year-old woman. Initially diagnosed with postmenopausal osteoporosis, 2-year history of hypophosphatemia and a significantly higher uptake of Fluorine-18 (18F)-AlF-NOTA-octreotide (18F-OC) in the left ethmoid sinus, provided crucial information for accurate diagnosis. METHODS: We presented a case with chart review and conducted review of the literature. RESULTS: The patient endured 1-year history of weakness and bone pain but without any nasal symptoms before a tissue d

The pattern and incidence of nasolacrimal injury in naso-orbital-ethmoid fractures: the role of delayed assessment and dacryocystorhinostomy.

A detailed review of forty-six patients with severe naso-orbital-ethmoid injury confirms that naso-lacrimal system injury is less common than originally suspected. Post-operative epiphora is more frequently due to eyelid malposition than naso-lacrimal obstruction. Eight patients (17.4%) required eventual dacryocystorhinostomy. Three out of five patients (60%), treated with closed reduction and external splint fixation, needed dacryocystorhinostomy. This treatment predisposes to external compression of the naso-lacrimal system by malpositioned bone fragments and segments. Open reduction and int

Teratoid carcinosarcoma of the paranasal sinuses.

Malignant tumours with teratoid or blastomatous features are exceptionally rare in the upper respiratory tract with only 8 documented cases, including the 3 in this report. The tumours occurred in adults aged 27 to 62 yr, and the sites of origin were the ethmoid sinus (4 cases), ethmoid and other paranasal sinuses (2 cases), unspecified sinuses (1 case) and nasopharynx (1 case). The disease was rapidly fatal in 3 cases in which treatment was restricted to surgery and was associated with longer survivals in those given supportive radiotherapy. The tumours are locally aggressive and may invade s

The role of surgical navigation in the endoscopic resection of a rare skull base tumor, case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Chondrosarcoma is a primary malignancy affecting mainly long bones. The location in the sinonasal tract and in a young female patient is exceptional. We aim through this case report to relate our own experience with a combined endoscopy-navigation approach in the resection of an ethmoidal chondrosarcoma. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an 18-year-old girl, who was presenting hyposmia, headache and unilateral retroorbital pain with a normal physical exam. Imageries were performed showing an invasive tissular and calcified ethmoidal tumor recalling a chondr

Use of computer-assisted tomography for diagnosis and standing surgical reduction of progressive ethmoidal hematoma in a mare.

Progressive ethmoidal hematoma (PEH) is a rare, nonneoplastic mass occurring in the sinonasal passages of horses. An 11-year-old, pregnant Thoroughbred mare was presented with a history of intermittent nasal discharge and stertorous respiration. On examination, radiography revealed increased opacity in the sinus and nasal cavities and endoscopy identified a mass emerging from the left ethmoidal turbinate. Computed tomography (CT) showed the range and origin of the mass, indicative of PEH. A standing frontonasal flap was made under sedation, following temporary tracheostomy to secure the airway

Endoscopic resection of a huge orbital ethmoidal mucocele masquerading as dacryocystocele.

Paranasal mucoceles are cystic masses lined with epithelium thought to result from chronic obstruction of an impaired sinus ostia. If sufficiency large, they can cause ophthalmological sequelae including diplopia, visual acuity, globe displacement as well as the rhinological symptoms of facial pain and headache. We present the case of a 57-year-old man who presented with a 1-year history of epiphora and right globe prominence with associated diplopia. Imaging demonstrated a mass located within the medial aspect of the orbit, closely associated to the lamina papyracea and nasolacrimal duct cons

Brain Perfusion Changes in a Patient with Facial Trauma.

A 69-year-old male was admitted to our hospital because of left facial trauma with bone fractures, including the maxillary sinus, zygomatic arch, and ethmoid and sphenoid bones. Brain computed tomography was unremarkable but regional cerebral blood flow with hexamethyl-propylene-amine oxime single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) showed hypoperfusion of the left hemisphere, which was reversible since a repeat SPECT 4 months later was substantially improved. Brain perfusion SPECT may provide information on cerebrovascular status in some cases of facial injury.

The manifestation of cocaine-induced midline destructive lesion in bone tissue and its identification in human skeletal remains.

Cocaine-induced midline destructive lesion (CIMDL) is a condition that may arise in response to chronic insufflation ("snorting") of cocaine. It is clinically diagnosed when the nasal septum, lateral nasal walls, and/or hard palate show signs of destruction in association with cocaine use. Although its true incidence is unknown, CIMDL is not an uncommon clinical finding amongst intranasal cocaine abusers and is likely to be encountered by forensic anthropologists and medical examiners working worldwide. Given the preponderance of drug abusers amongst the subjects of forensic casework, the abil
