Pyometra and complete vaginal adhesion in a miniature horse.

A 4-year-old miniature horse experienced intermittent episodes of pyrexia, lethargy, and purulent vaginal discharge following dsytocia. Vaginal endoscopy and transrectal ultrasonography revealed a blind-ending vaginal cavity and distended uterus. Surgical treatment was declined and the mare was euthanized. Post-mortem examination confirmed the diagnosis of pyometra and vaginal adhesions.

Intraocular nematodiasis caused by Parelaphostrongylus tenuis in an eland antelope (Taurotragus oryx).

A 10-mo-old female eland (Taurotragus oryx) at the Wilds exhibited recalcitrant, progressive unilateral uveitis for a 5-wk period, despite constant medical treatment. Unilateral enucleation was performed because of blindness and animal discomfort evidenced by continuous blepharospasm. Histopathologic examination of the eye demonstrated intraocular larvae morphologically consistent with Parelaphostrongylus tenuis, the first known case of intraocular P. tenuis migration. This animal subsequently was euthanatized because of severe, nonresponsive neurologic signs associated with P. tenuis infectio

Lobar holoprosencephaly in a Miniature Schnauzer with hypodipsic hypernatremia.

A 9-month-old male Miniature Schnauzer was examined because of a lifelong history of behavioral abnormalities, including hypodipsia. Diagnostic evaluation revealed marked hypernatremia and a single forebrain ventricle. The behavioral abnormalities did not resolve with correction of the hypernatremia, and the dog was euthanatized. At necropsy, midline forebrain structures were absent or reduced in size, and normally paired forebrain structures were incompletely separated. Findings were diagnostic for holoprosencephaly, a potentially genetic disorder and the likely cause of the hypodipsia. Simil

Animal hoarding cases in England: Implications for public health services.

Hoarding disorder is characterized by an accumulation of possessions due to excessive acquisition of or difficulty discarding possessions, regardless of their actual value and is estimated to affect 2-6% of the population. Animal hoarding, a distinct subset of hoarding disorder, has a significant public health impact on the humans involved, as well as animal welfare. Individuals exhibit self-neglect, apathy, social withdrawal and object hoarding; living within squalid, deteriorated, structurally unsafe and uninhabitable premises, alongside neglected animals. Cases are complex, costly and impac

Clip closure versus endoscopic suturing versus thoracoscopic repair of an iatrogenic esophageal perforation: a randomized, comparative, long-term survival study in a porcine model (with videos).

BACKGROUND: Esophageal full-thickness wall repair is an important but unsolved issue in endoscopy. It is unknown how well endoscopic clip closure (ECC) and endoscopic closure with suturing (ECS) perform compared with the criterion standard of thoracoscopic closure (TC). OBJECTIVE: Comparison of technical success, feasibility, long-term patency, complications, and histological quality of the different closure techniques (ECC, ECS, TC) for esophageal perforations. DESIGN: Comparative animal study. SETTING: Approved animal facility. SUBJECTS: Eighteen pigs. INTERVENTIONS: Eighteen pigs were

Dog importation and changes in heartworm prevalence in Colorado 2013-2017.

BACKGROUND: Animal welfare organizations, in order to increase dog adoptions and reduce euthanasia of homeless dogs, are transporting large numbers of dogs from state-to-state. Only approximately 1/3 of animal welfare organizations reportedly test for heartworm infection, treat, or provide heartworm prevention prior to transporting dogs. The reported prevalence of heartworms in dogs in animal shelters or rescued following natural disasters ranges between 14.6-48.8%. This analysis was conducted to evaluate the correlation between dog importation and heartworm prevalence in dogs in Colorado. ME

Functional and feasibility aspects of orthopedic exoprostheses in quadruped domestic animals: a systematic review.

The use of prostheses in animals with partial limb amputation has emerged as an alternative to euthanasia, aiming to improve their quality of life. However, the fabrication and adaptation remain challenging in Veterinary Medicine. This study aims to evaluate, through a systematic review, the determinants of viability, outcomes, and limitations of exoprostheses in domestic animals of varying sizes. A literature search was conducted in ScienceDirect, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar using structure search terms related to prosthesis, veterinary, amputation. After screening and

Use of chitosan membrane associated with polypropylene mesh to prevent peritoneal adhesion in rats.

The correction of wall abdominal defects often requires the use of implants such as polypropylene meshes. In spite of presenting good tissue acceptance, these biomaterials can migrate to adjacent viscera, promote enterocutaneos fistulas, tissue adherence and visceral erosions. In this work, the barrier effect of chitosan films associated with polypropylene meshes on adhesion formation experimentally induced in Wistar rats was evaluated. The animals were divided into two groups with 10 animals each. Animals in the CPP group were implanted with chitosan films associated with polypropylene meshes

The use of a penetrative captive bolt device during the killing of farmed saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus).

Killing of farmed saltwater crocodiles involve stunning with a penetrative captive bolt device, followed by a cut across the nape of the neck and physical destruction of the brain to ensure death. This study was a welfare-based assessment of the use of a penetrative captive bolt device in saltwater crocodiles, to determine whether it satisfies the criteria of a humane stunning method and can be regarded as a direct killing method without the need for the application of an adjunct method. Methods used were electroencephalogram (EEG), observation of post-stun behavior, and postmortem examination

Electroencephalographic evaluation of the effectiveness of blunt trauma to induce loss of consciousness for on-farm killing of chickens and turkeys.

Euthanasia of small numbers of birds in case of injury or other illness directly on the farm may be necessary for welfare reasons. This should be done without transportation of the moribund animals in order to minimize pain and distress. Blood loss has to be avoided to minimize the risk of contaminating the environment. Cervical dislocation in combination with a blunt trauma may be an appropriate way to achieve this aim but the bird's age and body weight may influence the practicability of this method in the field. In this study, we evaluated broilers, broiler breeders, and turkeys of differen

RAM2: animal study for safety evaluation of the new artificial urinary sphincter uroactive on a castrated RAM model.

PURPOSE: Artificial urinary sphincters (AUS) are largely used to treat severe urinary incontinence in men, due to reduced outlet resistance. The aim of this animal study was to assess safety of a new electronic artificial urinary sphincter (UroActive™, UroMems, France) on a castrated ram model. METHODS: RAM study was a non-clinical study, led in a center agreed for animal good laboratory practice studies. In 2019, 20 rams have been implanted with the UroActive device. There were 4 groups of rams, followed respectively 4, 13, 26 and 52 weeks after activation. Similarly to the test animals, 6 r

Adaptations of the aging animal to exercise: role of daily supplementation with melatonin.

The pineal gland, through melatonin, seems to be of fundamental importance in determining the metabolic adaptations of adipose and muscle tissues to physical training. Evidence shows that pinealectomized animals fail to develop adaptive metabolic changes in response to aerobic exercise and therefore do not exhibit the same performance as control-trained animals. The known prominent reduction in melatonin synthesis in aging animals led us to investigate the metabolic adaptations to physical training in aged animals with and without daily melatonin replacement. Male Wistar rats were assigned to

Enteric peripheral neuroblastoma in a calf.

An 11-month-old female Japanese Black calf had showed chronic intestinal symptoms. A large mass surrounding the colon wall that was continuous with the colon submucosa was surgically removed. After recurrence and euthanasia, a large mass in the colon region and metastatic masses in the omentum, liver, and lung were revealed at necropsy. Pleomorphic small cells proliferated in the mass and muscular layer of the colon. The cells were positively stained with anti-doublecortin (DCX), PGP9.5, nestin, and neuron specific enolase (NSE). Thus, the diagnosis of peripheral neuroblastoma was made. This i

[Survey of the existing housing situation for cats (Felis catus) in German-Swiss animal shelters].

This study investigated the current situation of cat husbandry in the animal shelters of german-speaking Switzerland. In 1993, Swiss-german animal shelters occupied just over 5000 housing spaces. Additionally, there was one quarantine space per eight housing spaces. During the summer, which is the season of highest demand, the requirement for housing and quarantine spaces was inadequate. In 1993, approximately 30,000 cats were housed in Swiss-german animal shelters. About four fifths of all entries were boarding cats and the rest were homeless cats. In 1993, about three-quarters of all homeles

"With every big outbreak, we lose staff": The mental health impacts of depopulation on veterinarians.

BACKGROUND: Depopulation, involving the mass euthanasia of livestock, is an established practice in the agricultural industry to ensure animal welfare, human health, and economic stability by preventing disease spread. There is evidence that veterinarians involved in animal-disease management and depopulation experience significant and long-lasting mental health impacts. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the mental health impacts of depopulation on veterinarians and the ways to build their resilience to these stressful events. PROCEDURE: Using qualitative methods, 11 veterinarians and industry

Obstructive urolithiasis in a Saanen goat in New Zealand, resulting in a ruptured bladder.

CASE HISTORY: A 3-year-old male, castrated Saanen goat was presented with an acute onset of vocalisation, abdominal discomfort and 'tail-flagging'. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Radiographs, including a positive-contrast study, indicated obstructive urolithiasis, and evidence of rupture of the urethra. Analysis of uroliths identified calcium carbonate crystals. Amputation of the urethral process could not re-establish urethral patency, so a tube cystotomy was performed but also was not successful. Eighteen days after admission, a perineal urethrostomy was performed. However, the goat's condition deterio

Opportunities for reducing animal use in the development of intravitreal biotherapeutics.

A retrospective analysis of 15 intravitreal biotherapeutic programs was conducted to identify strategies for reducing animal use in ocular drug development. Three main opportunities were found: (1) reconsidering the necessity of chronic toxicology studies, (2) omitting studies or groups involving systemic routes of administration, and (3) reducing or removing recovery groups. Twelve programs included both ≤13-week and ≥26-week repeat dose intravitreal studies, enabling direct comparison of outcomes. Chronic studies did not reveal new clinically relevant toxicities beyond those identified in sh
