Electromyograms (EMGs) were recorded from surface electrodes over the sternomastoid muscles and averaged in response to brief (0.1 ms) clicks played through headphones. In normal subjects, clicks 85 to 100 dB above our reference (45 dB SPL: close to perceptual threshold for normal subjects for such clicks) evoked reproducible changes in the averaged EMG beginning at a mean latency of 8.2 ms. The earliest potential change, a biphasic positive-negativity (p13-n23), occurred in all subjects and the response recorded from over the muscle on each side was predominantly generated by afferents origin

The effects of various alcohol doses on components of the visual evoked potential were investigated. Using a repeated measures, Latin square design, five alcohol dose conditions were administered to ten male subjects: 0.00 (placebo); 0.28; 0.36; 0.54 and 0.72 g/kg total body weight. Although the toxic effect of local anaesthetics on the activity of cerebral cortex has been extensively studied, little is known about their toxic effect on brainstem. We applied somatosensory and motor evoked potential studies to investigate patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) diagnosed clinically and roentgenographically. There were 32 consecutive cases collected, including 25 males and 7 females, at an average age of 62 +/- 8.2 (49-75) years. We present an overview on the impact of evoked potentials in diagnosis of ischemic brainstem lesions. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials and somatosensory evoked potentials depict abnormalities, whereas visual evoked potentials are normal in most cases. In patients with basilar artery thrombosis and primary pontine hemorrhage these evoked potentials are mostly abnormal and can indicate the location of the lesion. Visual evoked potentials to flash (FVEP) were recorded in 23 symmetrically growth retarded newborns of between 32 and 39 weeks gestational age and 41 normally grown controls. Pattern reversal and flash evoked potentials were recorded in 13 children with dissociated vertical deviation (DVD). No electrophysiological evidence was found to support the notion that patients with DVD have an anomalous (albinoid) projection of visual fibres originating from the temporal retina of each eye. However, DVD patients had significantly smaller monocular and binocular pattern evoked responses than age matched controls. Explanations are given for this finding and for the occipital VEP asymmetries reported by other workers.

Cortical somato-sensory evoked potentials (SEPs) from pudendal stimulation were determined in 23 patients with true premature ejaculation (TPE) and in 25 subjects as a control group. SEPs give a cortical representation of the sensory stimuli arising from the genital area. The amplitudes of the evoked response in the cortical area (P1-N1-P2 wave) were 4.96 +/- 1.89 microV in subjects with TPE and 3.79 - 1.38 microV in the controls (means +/- SD). Magnetic resonance imaging and evoked potential studies were performed on an infant with hydranencephaly. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated the absence of cortical tissue with a structurally intact mid- and hind-brain. Evoked potentials confirmed the loss of cortical activity with preservation of brainstem function. These diagnostic tests gave efficient and precise information concerning the extent of the intracranial pathology and prognosis.

Albinism is a congenital condition in which hypopigmentation occurs. In addition to this abnormality there is a misrouting of the optic nerve fibers, with some fibers from the temporal retina following a crossed route at the chiasma and terminating in the contralateral cortical hemisphere. A 49-year-old man with definite multiple sclerosis suffered an episode of right-sided trigeminal neuralgia (TN) of two weeks' duration, unaccompanied by any other clinical symptoms or signs of exacerbation.
