Depression among incarcerated persons following the death of a loved one: Does social support mitigate grief?

The death of a loved one generates adverse and potentially damaging consequences for surviving family members and friends. The challenges of … cerated persons with differential exposure to a loved one's death (i.e., immediate family, friends, extended family). Importantly, a high rate of death exists among incarcerated persons' loved ones, with 41% in the sample losing someone on the outside during their final year of incarceration. However, we find that external social support from family and friends a …

The Association between Perpetuation of Intimate Partner Violence and Family Support on Couples with an Incarcerated Partner.

The ripple effect of incarceration is multifaceted. Studies show that imprisonment impacts the well-being of intimate and extended familial relationships, parental involvement, and financial support. Using data from the Multi-site Family Study on Incarceration, Parenting, and Partnering [MFS-IP], this study examined the effects of incarceration on families. The focus of this study is to examine the effect of family support on perpetrating physical violence. The findings revealed that the actor effect for men (p < 0.05) is statistically significant, meaning that men with less family support per

Bone marrow transplantation in patients with leukaemia previously transfused with blood products from family members.

Transfusions are withheld, whenever possible, from patients with aplastic anaemia who are potential bone marrow transplant recipients because of the increased risk of graft failure associated with transfusions prior to transplantation. Family members are specifically excluded as blood product donors to reduce the likelihood of sensitizing the recipient to antigens shared by the blood and bone marrow donor. This policy of not using family members, particularly the HLA-matched bone marrow donor, to provide blood products prior to transplantation has been extended to leukaemia as well. To evaluat

Psychosocial ramifications of childhood malignancy for the child and family.

The changes that occur in a child's life following the diagnosis of cancer extend to other members of the family and, through time, far beyond the biologic cure of the disease. The responses of the family to this stress and the ways in which they cope with it will depend partially on their own resources and partially on the severity of the disease and its treatment. This paper describes the factors that influence the family's adaptation to illness and presents a case example that illustrates criteria useful in assessing the need for psychologic consultation in childhood cancer patients and the

Alarming β-lactamase-mediated resistance in multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae.

Resistance to β-lactams and other antibiotics in the Enterobacteriaceae is frequently associated with plasmidic resistance determinants that are easily transferred among species. β-Lactamase-mediated resistance is increasingly associated with plasmid-encoded extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and carbapenemases, specifically the CTX-M family of ESBLs, the KPC family of serine carbapenemases, and the VIM, IMP, and NDM-1 metallo-β-lactamases. Although clonal dispersion of resistant isolates was seen initially, more diverse genetic platforms are being observed as variations of mobile elements

Resistance to oxyiminocephalosporins mediated by blaTEM-52 genes in Salmonella typhimurium from humans in England and Wales.

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance among Salmonella is a matter of great public health concern, more so in the case of extended-spectrum cephalosporins, since these antimicrobials are normally regarded as the drugs of choice for complicated cases of infection. This study was designed to determine the occurrence of resistance mediated by the presence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) enzymes belonging to the TEM family. Only two isolates were detected after analysis of the 278,308 Salmonella isolates from the last 10 years. In both cases, the gene involved was a bla (TEM-52)-li

[Brain structural differences of schizophrenia patients with and without family histories].

OBJECTIVE: To identify the brain structural differences of schizophrenia patients and their parents between those with family history and those sporadic cases. METHODS: High resolution T1 weighted images were obtained using 3T MR from 10 familial patients and 10 sporadic patients matched with age, sex, years of education and duration of disease. All patients were in their first episode of care. Twenty unaffected parents of the patients (8 for familial cases, 12 for sporadic cases) and 20 normal controls were also examined. The images were preprocessed according to the optimized VBM protocol.

Solution NMR structure of Borrelia burgdorferi outer surface lipoprotein BBP28, a member of the mlp protein family.

Lyme disease is the most widespread vector-transmitted disease in North America and Europe, caused by infection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex spirochetes. We report the solution NMR structure of the B. burgdorferi outer surface lipoprotein BBP28, a member of the multicopy lipoprotein (mlp) family. The structure comprises a tether peptide, five α-helices and an extended C-terminal loop. The fold is similar to that of Borrelia turicatae outer surface protein BTA121, which is known to bind lipids. These results contribute to the understanding of Lyme disease pathogenesis by reveali

TDP-43 A315T mutation in familial motor neuron disease.

To identify novel causes of familial neurodegenerative diseases, we extended our previous studies of TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) proteinopathies to investigate TDP-43 as a candidate gene in familial cases of motor neuron disease. Sequencing of the TDP-43 gene led to the identification of a novel missense mutation, Ala-315-Thr, which segregates with all affected members of an autosomal dominant motor neuron disease family. The mutation was not found in 1,505 healthy control subjects. The discovery of a missense mutation in TDP-43 in a family with dominantly inherited motor neuron diseas

Newly described form of X-linked arthrogryposis maps to the long arm of the human X chromosome.

Arthrogryposis is a heterogeneous birth defect characterized by limitation of movement at multiple joints. One in 3,000 infants is born with arthrogryposis, and at least a third of these cases have a genetic cause. Four distinct types of X-linked arthrogryposis have been reported, and a severe lethal form recently was mapped to Xpll.3-qll.2. We now report an extended family affected with a novel variant of X-linked arthrogryposis that involves only the lower limbs. Linkage analysis with polymorphic DNA markers maps the disease locus in this unique family to the long arm of the human X chromoso…

Localisation of a gene for an autosomal recessive syndrome of macrocephaly, multiple epiphyseal dysplasia, and distinctive facies to chromosome 15q26.

BACKGROUND: We have previously described an autosomal recessive syndrome of macrocephaly, multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED), and distinctive facies in a large, extended Omani family. The MED observed seems to be part of a larger malformation syndrome, since both craniofacial and central nervous system changes were present in the family. We performed a whole genome scan in this family in order to identify the gene locus for this malformation syndrome. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using homozygosity mapping, we show linkage to the telomeric region of the long arm of chromosome 15. The position of bot

Ketoprofen extended-release capsules: a new formulation for the treatment of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Ketoprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the propionic acid family with demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis; a distinguished safety profile; and good tolerability. This report describes a new extended-release formulation that maintains therapeutic plasma ketoprofen concentrations for up to 24 hours. A single 200-mg capsule thus provides daytime and nighttime symptom control. Small pellets, enclosed in a gelatin capsule, are released in the stomach but release their contained ketoprofen only after reaching the nonacidic environ

Evaluation of neurodevelopmental symptoms in 10 cases of neonatal ichthyosis and sclerosing cholangitis syndrome.

Neonatal ichthyosis and sclerosing cholangitis (NISCH) syndrome is an extremely rare entity with only 19 patients described in the literature. We report an extended family with the disorder and investigate the association of neurodevelopmental symptoms. Patients with CLDN1 mutations, and specifically « the Moroccan» c.200_201delTT deletion, may be an increased risk for neurodevelopmental symptoms such as learning disabilities, mental retardation, and language delay.

Draft Genome Sequences of Escherichia coli Isolates from Wounded Military Personnel.

Members of the Escherichia coli bacterial family have been grouped as ESKAPE (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species) pathogens because of their extensive drug resistance phenotypes and increasing threat to human health. The genomes of six extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli strains isolated from wounded military personnel were sequenced and annotated.

Development of improved nomogram for prediction of outcome of initial prostate biopsy using readily available clinical information.

OBJECTIVES: To construct a nomogram that can be used to estimate the risk of prostate cancer (PCa) and high-grade PCa using readily available clinical information for men undergoing initial extended prostate biopsy (PBx). Many nomograms have been developed to predict the outcome of initial PBx. However, most require information not available at the decision to biopsy. METHODS: From March 2000 to April 2010, 1551 men with a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) of ≤10 ng/mL who underwent initial extended PBx were included in the present study. The nomogram predictor variables were patient age, race,

Sex on inpatient medical units among acutely medically ill adults: a psycho-oncology case study.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual health is an important part of emotional and physical functioning. For patients undergoing cancer treatment, sexual health is an often-overlooked aspect of care for a variety of reasons. It is further overlooked for patients who are undergoing extended hospital admissions. There are no current standardized guidelines or recommendations around patients admitted to hospitals for extended periods of time, and as such, is left to the discretion of floor staff or individual hospital units. Often, there are no guidelines at all, which potentially puts patients in unsafe or emoti
