Harnessing LSTM and XGBoost algorithms for storm prediction.

Storms can cause significant damage, severe social disturbance and loss of human life, but predicting them is challenging due to their infrequent occurrence. To overcome this problem, a novel deep learning and machine learning approach based on long short-term memory (LSTM) and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) was applied to predict storm characteristics and occurrence in Western France. A combination of data from buoys and a storm database between 1996 and 2020 was processed for model training and testing. The models were trained and validated with the dataset from January 1996 to December

Machine learning-based identification and ranking of risk factors for lumbar paraspinal muscle atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies highlight the crucial role of the paraspinal musculature (PM), particularly the multifidus (MF), in spinal health and patient outcomes. However, factors associated with PM atrophy and their relative importance remain unclear. To address this gap, we analyzed factors linked to PM atrophy in patients undergoing lumbar fusion using machine learning, aiming to clarify the multifactorial mechanisms underlying this condition. METHODS: Fatty infiltration (FI) of the lumbar MF was measured as a proxy for muscular atrophy in patients undergoing lumbar spinal fusion. Two machi

Machine Learning Outperforms Deep Learning for Atmospheric Attenuation Prediction in Free-Space Optical Communications under Iraqi Weather Conditions.

Free-space optical communications systems offer high bandwidth, increased security and license-free operation but are highly affected by the performance degradation due to the atmospheric attenuation caused by scattering and absorption. The prediction of attenuation accuracy is even more important in Iraq where the environment is hot, dusty, foggy and rainy in a random fashion. The aim of this study is to assess the performance of machine learning, deep learning and hybrid modeling techniques for the prediction of free-space optical communication systems atmospheric attenuation in different Ir

Machine learning methods to predict presence of residual cancer following hysterectomy.

Surgical management for gynecologic malignancies often involves hysterectomy, often constituting the most common gynecologic surgery worldwide. Despite maximal surgical and medical care, gynecologic malignancies have a high rate of recurrence following surgery. Current machine learning models use advanced pathology data that is often inaccessible within low-resource settings and are specific to singular cancer types. There is currently a need for machine learning models to predict non-clinically evident residual disease using only clinically available health data. Here we developed and tested

Fully Automatic Severity Grading of Lower Limb Arterial Blockage based on Plantar Perfusion Imaging.

Lower limb arterial blockage (LLAB) has recently been measured by camera based on plantar perfusion, offering a new method for the early prevention of peripheral arterial diseases (PAD). In this paper, we conducted a simulation experiment that applied five pressure levels to the left calf to simulate different degrees of LLAB and collected plantar video data from 20 healthy participants. We benchmarked four machine learning methods for LLAB severity grading based on plantar perfusion images generated by remote photoplethysmography. In addition, we propose the ResNet18-CL method, which combines
