Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is frequently a familial disorder but in few of these inherited cases it does form a prominent component of a multiple congenital anomaly (MCA) syndrome. We report a family in which eight individuals in four generations were affected by a dominantly inherited disorder involving MVP, short stature, a dolicocephalic face, broad forehead, posteriorly angulated ears, long philtrum, thin upper lip, high arched palate, and a small mandible. The proband presented with infective mastoiditis, bacterial endocarditis, and a supraventricular tachycardia. One other family member

Using preparation methods, the topography and the formation sources of pelvic plexus (PP) were studied in animals of Canidae (silver-black fox, blue fox) and Mustelidae (sable, American mink) families. Maximal differences in PP topography and PP-forming nerves were found between species (Canidae-Mustelidae), whereas the intraspecies differences were less pronounced. Intraspecies sex-associated differences in PP topography are associated with only quantitative parameters, while those in PP formation sources and in peculiarities of PP-forming nerves' branching pattern are qualitative in nature.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) in familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) may be modified by genetic and/or environmental factors. We described the effect of the cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) gene on CHD in heterozygous FH caused by low density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R) gene mutation. In 288 unrelated Japanese subjects with heterozygous FH, the allele frequency of an intron 14 G(+1)-to-A mutation (Int14 A) and a missense mutation in exon 15 (Asp442 to Gly, D442G) was 0.3 and 3.0%, respectively. HDL-C levels (1.55 +/- 0.08 mmol/l) in FH patients with heterozygous CETP deficiency were hi

A group of 43 patients from seven families affected by Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) with the codon 178Asn mutation of the PRNP amyloid precursor gene is compared to a group of 211 patients with the sporadic form of the disease. As a group, the patients with the codon 178Asn mutation had an earlier age at onset of illness (almost always presenting as an insidious loss of memory), a longer duration of illness, and an absence of periodic electroencephalographic activity. Transmission of disease to primates was accomplished using brain tissue homogenates from 6 of 10 patients, resulting in sign

The paper treats of the data concerned with the clinical picture of mental retardation in children from so-called incomplete families. It is noted that as regards a number of parameters, the children of the group under study occupy an intermediate place between children from incomplete families and orphans whereas as to the other parameters, they correspond with orphans or, on the contrary, do not differ from complete family children. The author also demonstrates the role played by the other unfavourable family conditions in the formation of both the intellectual defect and aggravating symptom

Claudins (CLDNs), pivotal components of tight junctions (TJs), are integral to epithelial barrier function, cell polarity, and paracellular permeability as well as in tumor initiation and development. Among the histological subtypes of lung cancer, lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) predominates and is frequently diagnosed at an advanced stage, contributing to its dismal 5-year survival rate and posing a significant threat to patient survival. In this work, the expression, prognosis and diagnostic of CLDNs in pan-cancer were analyzed using bioinformatics. In particular, the relationship between claudi

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Gastric cancer (GC) remains a leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. While most cases are sporadic, approximately 10% show familial clustering with only a minority explained by known hereditary syndromes. The remaining, termed familial non-hereditary gastric cancer (FNHGC), lack a defined high-penetrance germline mutation. This review aims to summarize current knowledge regarding the diagnosis, risk factors, molecular characteristics and management of FNHGC.
METHODS: A comprehensive narrative review of the literature was conducted focusing on epidemiologic, molecu

Family history (FH+) of substance use disorder (SUD) is an established risk factor for offspring SUD. The extent to which offspring psychological traits or the family environment, each of which may be relevant to familial transmission of SUD risk, vary by FH+ in socioeconomically disadvantaged populations is less clear. We compared the family/social environmental and psychological characteristics of 73 FH+ and 69 FH- youth ages 12-16, from a study of parental criminal justice system involvement in a primarily low-income, minority urban population. INTRODUCTION: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an inherited, neuromuscular disease characterized by the deterioration of spinal motor neurons, causing progressive muscular atrophy and weakening. It is an autosomal recessive disease with the mutation of the survival motor neuron 1 (SMN1) gene as a hallmark. Evidence suggests that the SMN2 gene modulates the severity of the disease. SMA is classified based on the maximum motor function achieved. This study aims to describe the genetic makeup and characteristics of an SMA cohort in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to establish a genotype-phenotype correlation of familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) caused by FZD4 gene mutations.
METHODS: Six hundred fifty-one probands and their family members were recruited based on a clinical diagnosis of FEVR between 2015 and 2021 at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center. Ocular examinations were performed in all participants. Targeted gene panel sequencing and whole-exome sequencing were performed in the probands, and Sanger sequencing was used to verify the mutations and segregation analysis was performed in the family members.

Primary aldosteronism (PA) is the most frequent cause of secondary hypertension, and patients display an increased prevalence of cardiovascular events compared with essential hypertensives. To date, 3 familial forms of PA have been described and termed familial hyperaldosteronism types I, II, and III (FH-I to -III). The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and clinical characteristics of the 3 forms of FH in a large population of PA patients. Three-hundred consecutive PA patients diagnosed in our unit were tested by long-PCR of the CYP11B1/CYP11B2 hybrid gene that causes FH-I, a

We report the clinical and genetic characteristics of a five-generation family (MN1) with an unusual form of myotonic dystrophy (DM). Affected individuals have clinical features that are similar to DM including myotonia, distal weakness, frontal balding, polychromatic cataracts, infertility and cardiac arrhythmias. Genetic analyses reveal that affected individuals do not have the CTG expansion associated with DM, nor is the disease locus linked to the DM region of chromosome 19. We have also excluded the MN1 disease locus from the chromosomal regions containing the genes for the muscle sodium

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a heterogeneous entity presenting as sporadic and familial disease. In familial AD, there is evidence for genetic linkage to a yet undefined gene on chromosome 14 in early-onset pedigrees and on chromosome 19 in late-onset pedigrees. In a few early-onset kindreds, there were mutations in the amyloid precursor gene on chromosome 21. There is an increased frequency of apolipoprotein E (ApoE) epsilon4 allele in patients with late-onset AD. We studied the clinical presentation and profile of cognitive deficits in 58 AD patients at the early stage of the disease. We divi
