Periorbital necrotizing fasciitis -- a review.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a severe infection characterized by rapidly progressing necrotizing infection of the superficial fascia with secondary necrosis of the overlying skin. Periorbital NF is uncommon because of the excellent blood supply to that area; nevertheless, it can sometimes result in death. The aim of this study is to present a systematic review and analyse the factors associated with death. We carried out a systematic literature review of all cases of periorbital NF published in the English language over the past 20 years and present the predisposing conditions, triggering fac

[Necrotizing fasciitis post-acute appendicitis].

Necrotizing fasciitis (FN) is a deep infection of the subcutaneous tissue and fascia, resulting in its progressive destruction. Usually it evolves very quickly. The authors present a case to FN abdominal wall, an extremely rare complication of acute appendicitis. A child had surgical removal of the appendix because of gangrenous acute appendicitis, which evolved into severe infection, with pain and inflammatory process of the abdominal wall. After diagnosis, he underwent a surgical debridement of the abdominal wall and drainage of intraperitoneal abscess. Antibiotic therapy, surgical debrideme

Molecular pathogenesis of necrotizing fasciitis.

Necrotizing fasciitis, also known as the flesh-eating disease, is a severe invasive infection associated with very high rates of human morbidity and mortality. It is most commonly caused by group A Streptococcus(GAS), a versatile human pathogen that causes diseases ranging in severity from uncomplicated pharyngitis (or strep throat) to life-threatening infections such as necrotizing fasciitis. Herein, we review recent discoveries bearing on the molecular pathogenesis of GAS necrotizing fasciitis. Importantly, the integration of new technologies and the development of human-relevant animal mode

Multifocal necrotizing fasciitis - case report.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare, life-threatening soft-tissue infection, characterized by rapidly spreading inflammation, with secondary necrosis of the fascia and surrounding tissues. It is mostly caused by group A beta-haemolytic streptococci or multibacterial. A case of the 25-year-old man admitted on September 2006 to the Department of Dermatology and Venereology with suspicion of erysipelas of the left upper limb and left foot is presented. On admission the pain, erythema, diffuse oedema of the left upper limb and erythema of the left foot were observed. Laboratory results revealed e

Eosinophilic fasciitis/generalized morphea overlap.

A 50-year-old woman presented with a three-month history of violaceous, non-tender, indurated plaques on the chest, abdomen, breasts, and proximal portions of the arms and legs. An incisional biopsy specimen showed changes consistent with a diagnosis of inflammatory morphea. Over the course of one year, the patient began to develop signs and symptoms suggestive of a diagnosis of eosinophilic fasciitis, which included the characteristic groove sign on the upper extremities. Although our patient did not exhibit peripheral or histopathologic evidence of eosinophilia, the diagnosis of eosinophilic

Perineal necrotizing fasciitis--surgical approaches.

INTRODUCTION: Perineal necrotising fasciitis is a fast advancing necrotic inflammation in the soft tissue of the perineal and perianal spaces and in the genital area sometimes involving even the abdominal wall and the two hips. AIM: To analyse and investigate the clinical symptoms and surgical approaches in the treatment of perineal necrotizing fasciitis so that clinical results can be optimised and improved. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the material using the analysis of variance, the alternative, non-parametric and graphic analyses at a level of significan

Management of facial necrotizing fasciitis.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a progressive, life-threatening, bacterial infection of the skin, the subcutaneous tissue and the underlying fascia, in most cases caused by ss-hemolytic group A streptococcus. Only early diagnosis and aggressive therapy including broad spectrum antibiotics and surgical intervention can avoid systemic toxicity with a high mortality rate. This uncommon disease generally occurs in the lower extremities and trunk, and only rarely affects the head and neck region. When located in the face necrotizing fasciitis is associated with severe cosmetic and functional restrictions

Neonatal necrotising fasciitis--Varanasi experience.

Neonatal necrotising fasciitis (NNF) is a rare and fatal disorder. Successful outcome depends on timely intervention. This paper presents single-centre experience of presentation, management and outcome of the condition. Fifteen patients of NNF were managed during the study period of 5 years. Parameters studied were age, sex, site of involvement and treatment. Treatment included intravenous (i.v.) antibiotics and conservative surgery. Age of presentation was 10-28 days. Male to female ratio was 2:1. Neck and scalp were the commonest site (53.3%). Culture reports were unimicrobial in 66% with p

[Diagnostic problems in eosinophilic fasciitis].

We presented two cases with symptoms of diffuse swelling of subcutaneous tissue, stiffness and tenderness of involved areas, fever, eosinophilia and hypergammaglobulinemia. The inflammatory infiltrates consisting of lymphocytes, plasma cells and eosinophils were yielded in fascia. The difficulties in differentition of the symptoms between eosinophilic fasciitis and "eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome" are discussed.

Necrotizing fasciitis: a deadly infection.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a life-threatening condition, consisting of a soft-tissue infection with rapidly progressive, widespread fascial necrosis. NF may be caused by a wide variety of microbes. Indeed, NF may be an infection of one species of bacteria or may be polymicrobial. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential. Surgical debridement and antibiotic therapy are the primary treatment options.

Necrotizing fasciitis in rheumatic diseases.

Necrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon but life-threatening complication in immunocompromised hosts. We reported four patients with rheumatic diseases complicated by necrotizing fasciitis and reviewed 14 others from literature search. Most patients were on corticosteroid treatment. Septic shock, disseminated intravascular coagulopathy and acute renal deterioration were common giving rise to an overall mortality rate of 27.8%. Septic arthritis may also complicate the condition. Statistical analysis on the series showed the lack of major surgical debridement as the only risk factor associated with

Soft-tissue infection: necrotizing fasciitis.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a potentially fatal infection of the skin and soft tissue. The early presentation may first appear as cellulitis. The skin stays intact in the early stages of NF; this leads to a deceptive benign appearance. The skin typically appears red, hot and exquisitely tender. Blisters may or may not be present. Severe local pain, which is out of proportion to the size and type of wound, is a hallmark sign seen in NF. Recognition of the signs and symptoms, as well as timely diagnosis and treatment of this condition is imperative. This is necessary in order to assist in prev

Necrotizing fasciitis: pathophysiology and treatment.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a life-threatening bacterial infection causing necrosis of the fascia, underlying skin, and vasculature. NF spreads rapidly, making immediate diagnosis important for survival. Treatment may involve the administration of several broad-spectrum antibiotics, surgical debridement, and skin grafting. In the following two articles, the pathophysiology, medical management, and nursing care of patients are discussed. An in-depth model care plan illustrates the complexity of the disease and its treatment.
