Digestive and liver disease : official journal of the Italian Society of Gastroenterology and the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver2004eng
BACKGROUND: A non-negligible percentage of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a leading cause of hepatic progressive disorder related to insulin resistance, have no metabolic risk factors, and abnormal intestinal permeability has been suggested to be involved in the pathogenesis of the liver damage. Coeliac disease, a curable disorder characterised by inflammatory mucosal damage, may show hepatic histological features similar to steatohepatitis. Conflicting data have been reported on the prevalence of coeliac disease in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.
AIM: To search for coeliac d

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is usually seen in middle-aged women with obesity, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and/or hyperlipidaemia. NAFLD has also been associated with other conditions. Surgical procedures to treat obesity such as jejunoileal bypass and gastroplasty as well as massive small bowel resection have been associated with NAFLD. Mechanisms such as rapid weight loss, certain nutritional deficiencies and bacterial overgrowth have been proposed. Other nutritional conditions such as extreme malnutrition and total parenteral nutrition can also cause NASH. This can

Patients with the autosomal recessive form of rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata (AR-RCDP) and other generalized peroxisomal disorders are deficient in the incorporation of fatty alcohol into plasmalogen lipids. To determine whether these patients accumulated fatty alcohol, we measured their plasma fatty alcohol concentrations. Plasma octadecanol levels were elevated in six patients with AR-RCDP but tended to be normal in other generalized peroxisomal disorders such as neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy and Zellweger syndrome. Cultured skin fibroblasts from AR-RCDP patients accumulated six-fold m

The study covered 25 patients with acute alcoholic hepatitis mean age of 48 years 25 patients with alcoholic liver steatosis (mean age of 49 years), and 41 clinically healthy persons - controls (mean age of 42 years). Plasma levels of individual free fatty acids (FFA) were determined in any case. There was a statistically significant decrease of palmitinc, stearinic, oleinic, linolic and arachidonic acid and of total FFA in the patients with acute alcoholic hepatitis (AAH) as compared with the controls (p less than 0.001). Similar changes were found in patients with liver steatosis but they we

UNLABELLED: Steatotic liver disease (SLD) includes a spectrum of liver situations together with alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) and metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), representing a growing global health. The current gold standard for diagnosing SLD is a liver biopsy, which, despite its accuracy, is invasive, highly- expensive, and carries the risk of headaches. Other imaging techniques and traditional liver feature assessments fall short of accurately diagnosing and staging SLD. Consequently, there's an urgent need for non-invasive biomarkers that can app

INTRODUCTION: In non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), neutrophils in liver infiltrates are activated, which may contribute to disease progression towards non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). However, the functional status of the blood neutrophils remains unknown and their role in the disease mechanisms is thus uncertain. We therefore characterized activation and function of blood neutrophils in patients with NAFLD in relation to clinical disease markers and the NAFLD plasma milieu.
METHODS: We studied 20 patients with NAFLD, among these 6 patients with NASH, and 14 healthy persons. Neu

The term, gut-liver axis, is used to highlight the close anatomical and functional relationship between the intestine and the liver. It has been increasingly recognized that the gut-liver axis plays an essential role in the development and progression of liver disease. In particular, in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and alcohol-related liver disease, the two most common causes of chronic liver disease, a dysbiotic gut microbiota can influence intestinal permeability, allowing some pathogens or bacteria-derived factors from the gut reaching the liver through the enterohepatic circulation co

BACKGROUND: Moderate alcohol consumption is believed to be associated with reduced mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the general population. This cross-sectional study aimed to comprehensively examine the association between alcohol consumption and subclinical cardiovascular damage or hepatic fibrosis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
METHODS: Subjects with NAFLD without a history of heart disease were extracted from 977 consecutive examinees who completed health checkups and optional cardiovascular examinations. Subclinical cardiovascular damage was assessed by coron

INTRODUCTION: The high prevalence of non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), a chronic progressive disease characterized by hepatic steatosis, poses a serious burden to human health. Depression and NAFLD share some common pathogenic mechanisms, and patients with depression are at an increased risk of NAFLD. The drug mirtazapine is commonly used in the treatment of depression, but it can also cause liver damage. However, whether mirtazapine induces or aggravates NAFLD remains uncertain. Thus, we evaluated the risk factors for NAFLD in patients with depression and the effects of mirtazapine o

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has emerged as a significant global health problem, mainly due to the increasing prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome. The gut microbiota plays an essential role in the development of NAFLD through the gut-liver axis. Dysbiosis of. the gut microbiota (GM) is associated with the pathogenesis of NAFLD. Dietary choices and other lifestyle factors influence the composition of the GM and contribute to the development of NAFLD. At the phylum level, individuals with NAFLD show an increased level in Actinobacteria and Firmicutes, while Verrucomicrobia,

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects 9-18% of the general pediatric population, and 41-53% of obese children, with a higher risk in the Hispanic population.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of suspected NAFLD in pediatric patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study of pediatric medical records, including anthropometric and biochemical data. Suspicion of NAFLD was assessed using body mass index (BMI) for age, the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, and the hepatic steatosis index (HSI).
RESULTS: 240 medical records were analyzed. The prevalence of suspe

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic liver disease, with its incidence increasing in parallel with the global prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Despite our steadily increasing knowledge of its pathogenesis, there is as yet no available pharmacotherapy specifically tailored for NAFLD. To define the appropriate management, it is important to clarify the context in which the disease appears. In the case of concurrent metabolic comorbidities, NAFLD patients are treated by targeting these comorbidities, such as diabetes and obesity. Thus, GLP-1 analogs, PPAR, and

In recent years, with the decline in HBV and HCV infections, there has been a corresponding reduction in both the morbidity and mortality of virus-associated HCC. Nevertheless, rising living standards, coupled with the increasing prevalence of metabolic disorders like diabetes and obesity, have led to a rapid surge in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease-associated hepatocellular carcinoma (NAFLD-HCC) incidence. The mechanisms underlying the progression from NAFLD to NAFLD-HCC are multifaceted and remain incompletely understood. Current research suggests that genetic predisposition, metabolic dys
