Activity budgets and the relationship between feeding and stereotypic behaviors in Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in a Zoo.

Activity budgets were studied in eight Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) at Chester Zoo (UK) for 35 days, between January and November 1999. … ency of stereotypic behavior in adult cow elephants was negatively correlated with the frequency of feeding behavior was tested and was found to be true. Stereotypic behavior increased in frequency toward the end of the day-while waiting to return to the elephant house for food--and elephants spent more time stereotyping during the winter months than during the su …

Effects of intracerebroventricular leptin administration on feeding and sexual behaviors in lean and obese female Zucker rats.

Obese Zucker rats (fa/fa) are characterized by inadequate leptin signaling caused by a mutation in the leptin receptor gene. Obese Zucker females are infertile and hyporesponsive to the inductive effects of ovarian hormones on sexual behaviors. Leptin treatment reverses aspects of reproductive dysfunction due to perturbations in energy balance in other animal models. Our first experiment tested the hypothesis that intracerebroventricular (icv) leptin administration would enhance the display of sexual behaviors in obese Zucker females. A second experiment compared lean and obese Zucker females'

[Dietary behavior and digestion of a constant composition feed in the dairy cow at the end of gestation and the beginning of lactation].

Five cows, fitted with rumen and duodenal fistulas, were given ad libitum a small amount of hay and a stable ration of 60 p. 100 maize silage and 40 p. 100 concentrate from 4 weeks before calving of 6 weeks after. The pattern of feeding behaviour and of digestive processes was recorded over the whole period. The following results were obtained: 1) While the amounts of the ingested dry matter of the ratio increased by 40 p. 100, the digestibilities of dry matter, organic matter, crude fiber and starch decreased by an average of 7, 7, 10 and 5 points p. 100 between 2 weeks before calving and the

Lateralized Gene Splicing in the Brain is Associated With Lateralized Feeding Behavior in an Asymmetrical Scale-eating Cichlid Fish.

Lateralized behavior ("handedness") is a trait observed across all vertebrates, including humans. As an adaptive trait involved in both intraspecific and interspecific interactions, it holds broad evolutionary significance. However, the molecular basis of its brain regulation-particularly post-transcriptional regulation-remains poorly understood. Perissodus microlepis, a textbook example in evolutionary biology and an endemic scale-eating cichlid fish from Lake Tanganyika, displays pronounced lateralized feeding behavior that is complemented by its asymmetric head, by which it bites the scales…

Effects of increasing narasin doses on feedlot performance, feeding behavior, carcass traits, and rumen-cecum morphometrics in Nellore cattle.

Narasin is an ionophore commonly used to improve energy efficiency and feed utilization in beef cattle. This study evaluated the impact of increasing levels of narasin on performance, feeding behavior, carcass traits, and ruminal and cecum morphometrics of Nellore cattle in feedlot. One hundred twenty-eight Nellore yearling bulls (393 ± 24 kg) were blocked by initial body weight (BW), allocated in 32 pens (4 bulls/pen). Pens were randomly assigned to one of four treatments: 0 (control), 13, 20, or 27 ppm of narasin. After a 14-day adaptation, animals were fed a high-concentrate diet (87% conce…

A booster vaccination for Salmonella spp. minimally affects feeding behavior in beef × dairy calves fed with automated milk feeders.

Farmers can use automated milk feeders (AMF) to identify changes in the behavior of individual calves before they are clinically sick. However, other management factors, such as routine procedures, may affect group- and individual-level feeding behavior patterns in calves. This matched cohort study (n = 44; 22 pairs of booster-vaccinated calves matched to controls) evaluated the effects of a booster vaccination comprised of inactivated Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Dublin on feeding behavior and relative changes in behavior of Angus × Holstein calves reared at one calf-rearing facility…

Central microinjection of phytohormone abscisic acid changes feeding behavior, decreases body weight, and reduces brain oxidative stress in rats.

Objectives: Natural products have a potential role on food intake in mammals. It has been reported that phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) has a regulatory role on metabolic processes. Here, the effects of ABA on feeding behavior and brain oxidative stress were investigated in male Wistar rats. Methods: ABA was injected intracerebroventricularly. Experimental groups were included (n = 9): control (received no injection), ABA vehicle (received normal saline), and ABA-treated groups were injected with different doses of ABA (2.5, 5, and 10 μg/rat for 7 days). Daily cumulative daytime and nighttime…

The use of a multivariate analysis to study between-goat variability in feeding behavior and associated rumen pH patterns.

This study examined feeding patterns and their relation to rumen pH. The measured variables were the cumulative time spent chewing (eating or ruminating) and the mean rumen pH, per 20-min intervals (46 intervals altogether). A total of 333 feeding patterns, defined as time-series of measurements for 1 animal and 1 given day during 15 h and 20 min following the afternoon feeding, were collected from 12 stall-housed dairy goats fed a total mixed ration twice daily. The first objective of this study was to analyze the within-day variability of feeding behavior to characterize different feeding pa…

Interrupting activator protein-1 signaling in conscious rats can modify neuropeptide Y gene expression and feeding behavior of phenylpropanolamine.

The mechanism for phenylpropanolamine (PPA)-induced anorexia has been attributed to its inhibitory action on hypothalamic neuropeptide Y (NPY), an orexigenic agent abundant in the brain. However, molecular mechanisms behind this effect are not well known. In this study, we investigated whether activator protein-1 (AP-1) signaling was involved. Rats were daily treated with PPA for 4 days. Changes in hypothalamic NPY, c-fos, c-jun, superoxide dismutase (SOD)-1, and SOD-2 mRNA contents were measured and compared. Results showed that c-fos and c-jun mRNA levels were increased following PPA treatme

The hypothalamic neuropeptide melanin-concentrating hormone acts in the nucleus accumbens to modulate feeding behavior and forced-swim performance.

Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) is a hypothalamic neuropeptide with a prominent role in feeding and energy homeostasis. The rodent MCH receptor (MCH1R) is highly expressed in the nucleus accumbens shell (AcSh), a region that is important in the regulation of appetitive behavior. Here we establish a role for MCH and MCH1R in mediating a hypothalamic-limbic circuit that regulates feeding and related behaviors. Direct delivery of an MCH1R receptor antagonist to the AcSh blocked feeding and produced an antidepressant-like effect in the forced swim test, whereas intra-AcSh injection of MCH had

Effects of abomasal infusion of long-chain fatty acids on intake, feeding behavior and milk production in dairy cows.

Fat is often fed to dairy cows to increase the energy concentration of their diet; however, feeding fat often reduces dry matter intake (DMI), which limits its impact on metabolizable energy (ME) intake. To investigate the effects of postruminal fat infusion on intake, feeding behavior, and milk production of dairy cows at two stages of lactation (55 and 111 d postpartum), six Holstein x British Friesian cows were infused into the abomasum, with a mixture of rapeseed and sunflower oils supplying predominantly unsaturated long-chain fatty acids (LCFA). Dry matter intake was significantly depres…

Intake limitations, feeding behavior, and rumen function of cows challenged with rumen fill from dietary fiber or inert bulk.

Twelve multiparous, rumen-cannulated cows (17 DIM) were fed 25 or 35% NDF diets without or with added rumen-inert bulk as water-filled plastic containers (500 ml each) within three 4 x 4 Latin squares (21-d periods). Added bulk equaled 25% of pretrial rumen volume for each cow. Objectives were to challenge cows with rumen fill in the form of dietary NDF and inert bulk to determine whether bulk affects intake similarly for diets of different NDF content or whether changes in behavior or rumen function allow cows to adapt to higher fill. Inert bulk had no effect on DMI for cows fed 25% NDF but d

Sex-specific control of feeding and defensive behaviors by MC3R neurons in the bed nuclei of the stria terminalis.

The bed nuclei of the stria terminalis (BST) is a nuclear complex that coordinates neuroendocrine, autonomic, and behavioral responses associated with maintaining homeostasis. Here, we demonstrate that melanocortin 3 receptor (MC3R) neurons in the BST (BST MC3R ) play a key role in modulating feeding behaviors and responses to stressful events. BST MC3R neurons are primarily GABAergic and colocalize with neuropeptides known to regulate feeding and affective behaviors. Chemogenetic activation of BST MC3R neurons causes reduced feeding, particularly in males. BST MC3R neurons are also robustly a…

Scheduled feeding improves behavioral outcomes and reduces inflammation in a mouse model of fragile X syndrome.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS), a leading inherited cause of intellectual disability and autism, is frequently accompanied by sleep and circadian rhythm disturbances. In this study, we comprehensively characterized these disruptions and evaluated the therapeutic potential of a circadian-based intervention in the fragile X mental retardation 1 (Fmr1) knockout (KO) mouse. The Fmr1 KO mice exhibited fragmented sleep, impaired locomotor rhythmicity, and attenuated behavioral responses to light, linked to an abnormal retinal innervation and reduction of light-evoked neuronal activation in the suprachiasm

Mice hypomorphic for Pitx3 show robust entrainment of circadian behavioral and metabolic rhythms to scheduled feeding.

Pitx3ak mice lack a functioning retina and develop fewer than 10% of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra. Del Río-Martín et al. (2019) reported that entrainment of circadian rhythms to daily light-dark (LD) cycles is absent in these mice, and that rhythms of locomotor activity, energy expenditure, and other metabolic variables are disrupted with food available ad libitum and fail to entrain to a daily feeding. The authors propose that retinal innervation of the suprachiasmatic nucleus is required for development of cyclic metabolic homeostasis, but methodological issues limit interpretati

Toward Understanding How Social Factors Shaped a Behavioral Intervention on Healthier Infant Formula-Feeding.

As part of a process evaluation, we explored in semi-structured interviews the experiences of 19 mothers who had taken part in a trial to reduce infant formula-milk intake and promote healthy weight gain, and reflections of three facilitators who delivered the intervention and control group protocols. Mothers appreciated the nonjudgmental support provided during the trial, after experiencing stigma and receiving limited advice on how, how much, and how often formula-milk should be given. The information mothers had previously found, printed on formula-milk tins, or provided by family, friends,
