Slipped capital femoral epiphysis following fracture of the femoral neck: a case report.

Reports on cases of femoral neck fracture complicated by a slipped capital femoral epiphysis associated with avascular necrosis and coxa vara deformity in children are extremely rare. In this case report, we describe a patient who had complications of a slipped capital femoral epiphysis with avascular necrosis and coxa vara deformity after a Delbet type III left femoral neck fracture. We also describe the surgical treatment to overcome these complications.

[Biomechanical characteristics of retinaculum in the treatment of femoral neck fractures].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the biomechanical characteristics of retinaculum in the treatment of femoral neck fractures. METHODS: The CT data of a 75-year-old female volunteer was processed by software to construct an intact femur model and femoral neck fracture model fixed with three cannulated screws, which were divided into models with retinaculum or not. The Von-Mises stress distribution and displacement were compared to analyze the stability differences between the different models to study the mechanical characteristics of the retinaculum in the treatment of femoral neck fractures. RESUL…

Modes of failure of hip hemiarthroplasty for femoral neck fracture.

BACKGROUND: Hemiarthroplasty is a common treatment for displaced femoral neck fractures, but limited Canadian data are available about hemiarthroplasty failure. We evaluated the frequency and predictors of hemiarthroplasty failure in Manitoba. METHODS: In this retrospective multicentre province-wide study, billing and joint registry databases showed 4693 patients who had hemiarthroplasty for treatment of femoral neck fracture in Manitoba over an 11-year period (2005-2015), including 155 hips with subsequent reoperations (open or closed) for treatment of hemiarthroplasty failure. Hospital reco…

Amyloidosis of the Femoral Neck: An Unusual Cause of Pathologic Fracture.

The deposition of amyloid within human tissue can be detrimental to the proper functioning of multiple organ systems. While the infiltration of the amyloid protein within the musculoskeletal soft tissues can lead to compressive neuropathies, tendon irritation or rupture, and joint stiffness, pathologic fracture as a result of amyloid deposition in bone is a rare manifestation of amyloidosis. We present a case of pathologic fracture of the femoral neck from amyloid deposition in a 59-year-old male on chronic hemodialysis who was found to have lytic lesions in his proximal femur. At the time of

Acute hip pain: mimics of a femoral neck fracture.

Acute hip pain is a common presenting complaint among patients attending Emergency Departments particularly following a traumatic event. A proximal femoral fracture is the main consideration, which requires urgent confirmation and treatment; however, there are a number of conditions, which could mimic neck of femur fracture and the causes may not be directly related to the hip, so systematic and careful observation of pelvic MRI could shed light on the true culprit of acute hip pain.

Femoral neck's fracture in Fahr's Syndrome: case report.

Fahr's syndrome, also known as "Bilateral Striopallidodentate Calcinosis" (BSPDC) primitive, is a rare neurological disease characterized by the presence of idiopathic, bilateral, symmetrical and abnormal deposition of calcium in areas of the brain that control movements including the basal ganglia, dentate nuclei of the cerebellum, nuclei of thalamus and semi-oval center. We describe a case of a 76-year-old male patient underwent reduction and fixation of a subtrochanteric fracture with intramedullary nail. During post-operative rehabilitation therapists's patient management was difficult due

Chondroblastoma: a rare cause of femoral neck fracture in a teenager.

Chondroblastomas usually present in the epiphyseal region of bones in skeletally immature patients. These uncommon, benign tumors are usually treated with curettage and use of a bone-void filler. Here we report a case of a hip fracture secondary to an underlying chondroblastoma in a 19-year-old woman. Open biopsy with intraoperative frozen section pointed toward a diagnosis of chondroblastoma. Extended curettage was performed, followed by cryotherapy with a liquid nitrogen gun and filling of the defect with calcium phosphate bone substitute. The femoral neck fracture was stabilized with a slid

Challenges in the treatment of femoral neck fractures in the nonelderly adult.

Femoral neck fractures in young patients are a relatively rare event and are often the consequence of a high-energy injury. Concomitant injuries are present more than 50% of the time. Previous reports have found the rate of nonunion and avascular necrosis in this population to be as high as 35% and 45%, respectively. The salvage options, which tend to yield more acceptable results in elderly patients with femoral neck fractures, yield disproportionately poor results in young, active patients who are often productive members of the labor force. Many reports exist in the literature evaluating th…

Differential diagnosis of a femoral neck/head stress fracture.

STUDY DESIGN: Resident's case problem. BACKGROUND: Identifying stress fractures of the hip can be a challenging differential diagnosis. Pain presentation is not always predictable and radiographs may not show the fracture, especially during its early stages. Hip stress fractures left untreated can displace and necessitate open reduction internal fixation or total hip arthroplasty. DIAGNOSIS: A 70-year-old woman presented to the physical therapy clinic with complaints of right hip pain. She had been evaluated by a physician and radiographs of the hip, which revealed some arthritic changes, we

Fracture of the femoral neck, the risk of serious underlying pathology.

Between 1997 and 2003, a total of 2223 patients presented to our hospital with the neck of femur fracture. This retrospective study examines the histological results of 90 patients (4%) suspected of having a fracture associated with serious underlying pathology. The mean age at the time of fracture was 80 years (44-97). The patients were divided into four groups. Group I: 34 patients with fracture without history of fall or trauma. Group II: 21 patients with suspicious lesions on the standard pelvic radiograph taken on admission. Group III: 27 patients with past history of malignancy without k

Vitamin D metabolism in women with femoral neck fracture.

Abnormalities in plasma vitamin D metabolites and an increased prevalence of osteomalacia have been described in elderly patients sustaining a fracture of the femoral neck. In order to investigate whether the plasma concentrations of the vitamin D metabolites are normal, and whether vitamin D deficient osteomalacia in patients with femoral fracture can be diagnosed using biochemical criteria alone, we have studied before and after 7 days of 40 micrograms oral 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 elderly patients admitted to hospital with a femoral fracture, elderly patients undergoing elective replacement of

[The cementless Moore prosthesis in femoral neck fractures of the aged].

We report on 207 cases of elderly patients suffering from femoral neck fractures treated with cementless Moore-hip prosthesis in the years 1967 to 1979. Low complication rate and good functional results were also confirmed in 29 follow-up examinations 3 years or more after arthroplastic. Loosening of prosthesis, breaking of material or protrusio acetabuli could not be found. The method is easy to be learned and well tolerated by the aged patients. In regard of the contraindications it leads to good results.

Is Femoral Neck System a Valid Alternative for the Treatment of Displaced Femoral Neck Fractures in Adolescents? A Comparative Study of Femoral Neck System versus Cannulated Compression Screw.

Background and Objectives: The femoral neck system (FNS) is a new minimally invasive internal fixation system for femoral neck fractures (FNFs), but its use has not been reported in adolescents. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes of displaced FNF in adolescents treated with FNS or a cannulated compression screw (CCS). Materials and Methods: A retrospective study of 58 consecutive patients with displaced FNF treated surgically was performed; overall, 28 patients underwent FNS and 30 CCS fixation. Sex, age at injury, type of fracture, associated lesions, …
