We report the first case of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) accompanied by fibrinogen storage disease (FSD). A 50-year-old Japanese woman had been treated for numbness of her right-side extremities for 5 years. Mildly elevated serum levels of alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl transferase were detected. This study evaluates the role of neutrophil granulocytes in mediating acute phase stimulation of fibrinogen synthesis. Turpentine was administered to neutropenic and non-neutropenic rats and fibrinogen synthetic rates measured in an isolated liver perfusion system. Measurement of fibrinogen degradation products by a sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique.

We describe a highly sensitive enzyme immunoassay technique using beta-D-galactosidase from Escherichia coli as a label to quantify fibrinogen and its degradation products. The minimum detectable concentrations of fibrinogen, fragment D and fragment E, were 0.6, 0.06 and 0.2 ng/ml of reaction mixture, respectively. The concentration of fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products in urine (FDPu) was measured in samples obtained from 114 patients and 63 clinically healthy volunteers, once or repeatedly. The FDP titers measured by the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) method corresponded to less than 2.6 mug/ml FDP in all samples from healthy controls.
