Non-ossifying fibromas and fibrous cortical defects around the knee - an epidemiologic survey in a Japanese pediatric population.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of non-ossifying fibroma (NOF) and fibrous cortical defect (FCD) in a Japanese pediatric population and the association between the lesion size and pain. METHODS: This retrospective study, conducted across 10 Japanese institutions, included patients aged 5-15 years who had undergone standard antero-posterior and lateral view radiography of the knee. Using these radiographs, we diagnosed the lesion as a NOF or FCD. Patient demographics, including age, sex, the size and location of the NOF, and chief complaint were recorded

Primary Hyperparathyroidism With Brown Tumor-A Case Mistaken as Non-Ossifying Fibroma Resolved by Biochemical and Radiological Correlation.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is uncommon in the pediatric population and rarely presents with overt skeletal complications such as brown tumors. This case study describes a 16-year-old female who initially presented with abdominal pain and was subsequently found to have severe hypercalcemia (serum calcium 16.4 mg/dL) and markedly elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH 1700 pg/mL) and bilateral nephrolithiasis. There were no features suggestive of multiple endocrine neoplasias. A history of a previously diagnosed "non-ossifying fibroma" in the proximal tibia was later reinterpreted as a brown

"Maxillary juvenile ossifying fibroma: A case study of severe tooth displacement and orbital involvement in a pediatric patient".

The aggressive growth and high recurrence rate of juvenile ossifying fibroma pose significant challenges in diagnosis and treatment. The lesion can expand substantially, involving the orbit and causing tooth displacement, leading to complications. We present the case of a 9-year-old boy with a 1-year history of progressively enlarging, painless swelling of the left cheek, accompanied by significant molar tooth displacement and a hyperglobus sign in the left eye. Histopathological examination ultimately confirmed the diagnosis of trabecular juvenile ossifying fibroma. This case highlights the i

Early Intervention with a Preformed Eruption Guidance Appliance After the Excision of Cemento-Ossifying Fibroma: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) is a benign, non-aggressive fibro-osseous tumor in which normal bone is replaced by fibrous tissue containing collagen fibers, bone, or cementum-like material. Although COF is rare in children, its occurrence requires careful management due to its potential impact on tooth development and occlusion. Surgical excision is the widely used treatment; however, post-operative occlusal guidance is crucial, particularly in pediatric patients. CASE REPORT: This case report presents the early intervention using a preformed eruption guidance appliance (EGA) fo

Curettage and external fixation for displaced pathological fracture through non-ossifying fibroma in the radius: A case report.

Non-ossifying fibromas are extremely rare in the upper extremity, such as those in the radius and humerus. The treatment of completely displaced fractures following non-ossifying fibromas in the radius has not been reported. We present the case of a pathological fracture caused by a non-ossifying fibroma in the radius treated using external fixation. The patient was a 10-year-old girl who presented to our hospital with right forearm pain after an accidental fall. She had no remarkable medical history. Radiographs and computed tomography showed a pathological fracture through osteolytic lesions

A large maxillary cemento-ossifying fibroma superimposed with solitary bone cyst documented over 18 years: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Cemento-ossifying fibromas are rare, benign lesions of the head and neck regions. The origin of these lesions can be traced to the periodontal ligament, because its cells are able to form cement, lamellar bone, or fibrous tissue. CASE PRESENTATION: A rare case report of a young Caucasian female with a COF is described including follow-ups. She remained untreated for several years despite early radiographic findings of the lesion without a definitive diagnosis. The patient ultimately underwent radical surgery and the whole lesion was removed. The subsequent histological examinati

Surgical correction of residual facial deformity following conservative excision of a giant maxillary ossifying fibroma: A case report.

RATIONALE: Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a benign fibro-osseous lesion that can develop in the oral and maxillofacial region. OF is more common in females and has a marked predilection for the mandible, occurring rarely in the maxilla. Lesions grow slowly and are usually asymptomatic until growth produces an obvious swelling, pain, paresthesia, and facial deformity. With low rates of recurrence, treatment is usually curettage or resection. Very large lesions that invade other organs and that cannot be completely removed should be excised conservatively. PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a case of a 46

Ossifying fibroma of the maxilla: a case report including its imaging features and dynamic magnetic resonance imaging findings.

Ossifying fibroma (OF), a rare nonodontogenic tumor, is defined as a bone-related jawbone lesion. The main histopathological feature of OF is the replacement of bone by benign connective tissue. Ossifying fibroma usually occurs in the second to fourth decades of life and shows a predilection for females. Ossifying fibroma most commonly occurs in the mandible, and OF arising from the anterior part of the maxilla is rare. Ossifying fibromas display various radiographic findings, including varying degrees of radiolucency and radiopacity, depending on the proportions of their soft and hard tissue

Ossifying fibroma of long bone: its distinction from fibrous dysplasia and its association with adamantinoma of long bone.

Two cases of ossifying fibroma of long bones are presented. This tumor is confused with monostotic fibrous dysplasia, but can be distinguished by its intracortical location, as demonstrated radiographically, and by its histologic pattern. Distinction from fibrous dysplasia is important since ossifying fibroma of long bone is a more aggressive lesion with different therapeutic implications. It appears that ossifying fibroma and adamantinoma of long bones are somehow related, and that lesions resembling fibrous dysplasia in association with adamantinomas of long bones are actually ossifying fibr

Role of collagen and immunostaining for TGF-β in the clinical and microscopic findings of pyogenic granuloma and peripheral ossifying fibroma.

BACKGROUND: Collagen is a component of Pyogenic Granuloma (PG) and Peripheral Ossifying Fibroma (POF) and performs different functions in these lesions. The objective of this study is to evaluate the role of collagen and immunostaining for Transforming Growth Factor beta (TGF-β) in the clinical and microscopic findings of PG and POF. MATERIAL AND METHODS: PG (n=20) and POF (n=20) were selected for clinical evaluation (sex, age, localization, size and evolution time) and microscopic analysis (picrosirius red staining for collagen analysis and immunohistochemistry for TGF-β) performed in the su

Treatment of an ossifying fibroma of the mandible with endodontic microsurgery and grafting with a biphasic calcium sulfate material: a case report.

UNLABELLED: A significant percentage of lesions of endodontic origin require surgical management due to the possible diagnosis of odontogenic cysts and tumors in the maxilla and mandible. Ossifying fibroma is a benign fibro-osseous lesion that typically presents as a painless, slow-growing, and expansile lesion that appears as a well-demarcated lesion with a variable degree of internal calcification on radiography. Treatment results in a large osseous defect, utilization of a graft to fill the void accelerates healing and prevents complications that may result from failure to fill by the host

Synchronous Reconstruction of the Jaw Using a "One and a Half"-Barrel Fibular Bone Graft for Ossifying Fibroma Patients.

BACKGROUND: Ossifying fibroma is one of the common benign tumors that affect the appearance and functions of the jaw. Ossifying fibroma may exhibit a wide range of biological behaviors, leading to deformities involving the jaw and other secondary facial deformities. Hence, to improve the function of the jaw and the patient's general facial appearance (bearing in mind each patient's facial shape and, or appearance), the authors thus, however, used a ''one and a half"-barrel fibular bone graft to achieve the ideal height and radian of the bone graft. CASE PRESENTATION: Between July 2017 and Jan

Nonvascularized Free Transport Distraction Osteogenesis to Reconstruct the Mandibular Defect of a Patient With an Ossifying Fibroma: A Case Report.

We report on a case in which trifocal distraction osteogenesis was applied in a patient with a mandibular defect caused by resection of an ossifying fibroma. During the surgical procedure, we accidentally dissected the surrounding periosteal tissue of the left transport completely in the process of transport disc preparation and made the disc into a free bone graft. However, we still used this transport and successfully completed the distraction osteogenesis. The patient's facial and occlusal function were regained after treatment.

The modified hemi-Lothrop procedure: a variation of the endoscopic endonasal approach for resection of a supraorbital psammomatoid ossifying fibroma.

Tumors in the supraorbital region are most commonly accessed through transcranial approaches, including fronto-orbital, orbitozygomatic, and eyebrow supraorbital keyhole approaches. Purely endoscopic endonasal approaches (EEA) are more challenging to perform because of limitations in access and visualization for lateral extension beyond the midline corridor. The modified hemi-Lothrop procedure, a variation of an extended EEA, allows for binostril access and visualization of the lateral supraorbital region while preserving the contralateral frontal sinus drainage pathway. The operative techniqu

Psammomatoid Ossifying Fibroma of the Ethmoid Sinus with Secondary Intracranial Aneurymal Bone Cyst: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (JPOF) is a rare, slowly progressive tumor of the extragnathic craniofacial bones, with a tendency toward locally aggressive behavior and recurrence. The pathognomonic histopathologic feature is the presence of spherical ossicles, which are similar to psammoma bodies. Very few cases in association with secondary aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) formation have been reported in literature. Treatment consists of complete surgical removal. However, incomplete excision has been associated with a high local recurrence rate. The prognosis is good because malignant ch

[18F]Fluorocholine PET/CT in a 15-year-old patient suggested HPT-JT syndrome with active cemento-ossifying fibroma.

BACKGROUND: Hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor (HPT-JT) syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by CDC73 gene mutations, predisposing individuals to primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT), cemento-ossifying fibromas, and other neoplastic conditions. [18F]Fluorocholine PET/CT has emerged as a tool for localizing hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands in pHPT, but its application in HPT-JT syndrome remains unreported. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 15-year-old male presenting with severe hypercalcemia, increased PTH serum levels, and a history of cemento-ossifying fibroma remova

Primary Infectious Mononucleosis Masquerading as Post-operative Fever in a Young Patient with Cemento-ossifying Fibroma of the Skull Base.

The typical presentation of infectious mononucleosis (IM) is characterized by a triad of fever, pharyngitis, and lymphadenopathy. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is the most common etiologic agent for IM. Humans are the reservoir for EBV, and it is transmitted via intimate contact between individuals. This case presents a 19-year-old male with recurrent cemento-ossifying fibroma of the skull base with a complicated post-operative course including bacterial meningitis, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, and intermittent fevers despite treatment with intravenous cefepime. Recurrent juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma with secondary aneurysmal bone cyst of the maxilla: a case report and review of literature.

Juvenile ossifying fibroma is a benign fibro-osseous lesion commonly affecting the extra-gnathic craniofacial skeleton of the young individuals. The psammomatoid and trabecular variants are its two histopathological subtypes having distinctive clinico-pathological characteristics. Secondary aneurysmal bone cysts are frequently reported to arise in the pre-existing fibro-osseous lesions but rarely reported in the psammmomatoid variant of the juvenile ossifying fibroma. Such hybrid lesions, especially massive in size, tend to exhibit a greater aggressive growth potential and higher recurrence ra
