Methods for measuring financial toxicity after cancer diagnosis and treatment: a systematic review and its implications.

Patients experiencing financial distress as a side-effect of cancer are not only reported in the United States, but also in third-party payer healthcare systems in Europe. Since validated survey instruments are a prerequisite for robust and comparable results, we aimed to compile and classify available instruments to enable both a better understanding of the underlying construct of financial toxicity and to facilitate further studies that are adjustable to various healthcare systems. We did a systematic literature search on studies that provide data on perceived cancer-related financial distre

Are We Truly Preparing Students for Financial Success? Insights from Economic Education Curricula in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Financial literacy is an essential competency for university students, especially those in economics education programs, as it supports effective money management and responsible decision-making. However, higher education curricula in Indonesia still emphasize theoretical aspects over practical financial skills, raising concerns about whether graduates are adequately prepared for financial challenges. METHODS: This study employed a qualitative content analysis to evaluate the integration of financial literacy within economics education curricula in Indonesia. Data were collected t

Social and Financial Outcomes of Living Liver Donation: A Prospective Investigation Within the Adult-to-Adult Living Donor Liver Transplantation Cohort Study 2 (A2ALL-2).

Because results from single-center (mostly kidney) donor studies demonstrate interpersonal relationship and financial strains for some donors, we conducted a liver donor study involving nine centers within the Adult-to-Adult Living Donor Liver Transplantation Cohort Study 2 (A2ALL-2) consortium. Among other initiatives, A2ALL-2 examined the nature of these outcomes following donation. Using validated measures, donors were prospectively surveyed before donation and at 3, 6, 12, and 24 mo after donation. Repeated-measures regression models were used to examine social relationship and financial o

It Takes a Village: Health and Old-Age Support in China.

How do older individuals cope with health impairments and the potential economic losses that ensue? Exploiting longitudinal data on a nationally representative sample of Chinese seniors, we investigate whether and how familial economic support responds to sudden and sizable changes in health. We find that both financial and instrumental support from children go up following a health shock. Furthermore, financial transfers coming from siblings, other relatives and friends increase by a larger percentage than those from children. We also find evidence that instrumental care received from a spous

Parent-Child Relationships and Aging Parents' Sleep Quality: A Comparison of One-Child and Multiple-Children Families in China.

Objectives: This study examined the associations between parent-child relationships and sleep difficulty among older parents in the context of Chinese multiple-children and one-child families. Methods: Using the 2014 China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey, this study analyzed older parents' (N = 8,450) reports of sleep quality and relationships with each of children. Patient Perspectives on Social and Identity Factors Affecting Multiple Myeloma Care: Barriers and Opportunities.

Patients living with multiple myeloma (MM) have a substantial disease burden and face multiple barriers to care. Building upon our previous research using mixed methods, this focus group research aimed to identify patients' priorities regarding specific social and identity-related needs, map these prioritized needs to the disease journey, and describe patient-generated ideas to improve patient support. Participants noted that patients with MM need a range of emotional, social, and financial support throughout the disease journey. They identified initial MM diagnosis and treatment adherence as …

Financial Toxicity and Unemployment in Patients with Major Lower Limb Amputation are High.

BACKGROUND: Major limb amputation can place a significant financial burden on patients and their families because of costs of care and loss of income, encapsulated by the concept of financial toxicity. We sought to measure and understand factors associated with financial toxicity among patients undergoing major lower limb amputation for diabetic foot ulcers or peripheral arterial disease. METHODS: We identified patients in an institutional database who received lower limb amputations and excluded patients who underwent amputation due to known trauma or cancer. We administered the Financial In

Financial Stress Amongst People Who Self-Harm in Sri Lanka.

OBJECTIVE: Socioeconomic status deprivation is known to be associated with self-harm in Western countries but there is less information about this association in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC). One way of investigating this is to assess the prevalence of indicators of financial stress in people who self-harm. We have assessed the prevalence and correlates of day-to-day financial hardships amongst individual presenting with non-fatal self-harm to hospitals in Sri Lanka. METHODS: Data on non-fatal self-harm presentations were collected from an ongoing surveillance project in 52 hospital

Looking to the empirical literature on the potential for financial incentives to enhance adherence with COVID-19 vaccination.

COVID-19 vaccination efforts are underway offering hope for saving lives and eliminating the pandemic. The most promising vaccines require two injections separated 3-4 weeks apart. To achieve heard immunity, 70-90% of the population or perhaps more must be inoculated. Anticipation of adherence challenges has generated commentaries on strategies to enhance adherence including financial incentives. A notable gap in these commentaries is any discussion of the scientific evidence regarding the efficacy of financial incentives for increasing vaccine adherence. This commentary addresses that gap. [The necessity of conducting to the end the activities of vector control in the onchocerciasis control program in west Africa: recall of the stakes and proposal of a minimum budget for the period 1998-2002].

After a brief presentation of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa (OCP), the authors realize the health and socioeconomic consequences that could follow a cessation of larvicide treatment before 2002 in the south-eastern and western extensions of the Programme. Taking into account that OCP activities are theoretically supported until 1997, but aware of financial constraints that will probably increase from now to 2002, this paper proposes an a minima estimation of the residual vector control activities for a "phasing out" spread out for five years (1998-2002). These estimations

Aotearoa New Zealand pet guardians' attitudes towards the financial cost of pet care.

Pet guardianship is a common practice globally that enhances human well-being by offering companionship and emotional support. However, it also entails financial responsibilities that can pose challenges to both human and animal well-being. This study used an online survey distributed between January and March 2019 to adults residing in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ), to investigate financial aspects of pet guardianship, including the importance of pet insurance, the impact of veterinary costs, and the ethical considerations of owning a pet. Understanding these aspects is crucial for promoting resp

Financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on immigrant communities in Portland Maine: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic not only disproportionately impacted the health of immigrants in the US, but led to financial disparities as well. However, few studies to date capture the experience of asylum-seeking and refugee populations. METHODS: We analyzed semi-structured interviews conducted in fall 2021 with immigrants (primarily asylum-seekers and refugees from countries in Central and East Africa) and key informants, and conducted focus group discussions in spring 2023 with employees of a non-profit supporting the financial needs of asylum-seekers and refugees in Portland, ME. Clinical management of electrical burns in the developing world: a case of electrical burn injury left untreated leading to amputation.

We discuss the case of a 26-year-old male patient from Northern Samar, the Philippines who was left without essential health services after the amputation of all four limbs following a high voltage (20 000 volts) injury in Metro Manila in 2011. Local health services in the developing world are faced with enormous challenges in providing first-line care for burn patients. The cost of maintaining a burn unit, finding suitable qualified staff, and appropriate referral mechanisms are only some of the challenges faced. Once a patient is discharged from hospital they face more obstacles in obtaining
