INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic led to increased assaults, self-inflicted injuries, and firearm-related injuries across the nation, along with increased reports of depression and anxiety worldwide. Our study examines trends in these types of injuries among diverse racial and ethnic groups in the United States during this time.
METHODS: Data was extracted from the ACS-TQIP database, including patients with assaults, self-inflicted injuries and firearm-related injuries from 2018 to 2021. Pre-COVID period was defined as 2018-2019, and COVID period as 2020-2021. We performed univariable and m

OBJECTIVE: The ripple effects of gun violence are far reaching, particularly for children impacted by this trauma. Many of the available sources of mental health support in the wake of gun violence do not address disrupted sleep, which commonly develops as a consequence of loss.
METHOD: We recruited adults for focus groups who are caregivers to a child or young adult impacted by loss due to gun violence from the Victim Support Services department of a police department in the US Southeast. The children to whom the adult provides care were required to be 13 years of age or younger. The aim of

BACKGROUND: There have been multiple changes to the Arms Act 1983 in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) which have subsequently been associated with … earm-related injuries that did not result in hospitalization or other burdens of illness related to firearms.
CONCLUSION: The high costs of firearm-related injuries underscore the importance of improving firearm-related harm reduction in NZ. This will depend on maintaining and strengthening current firearm access restrictions and could be enhanced through …

BACKGROUND: Primary care-based secure firearm storage programs are well-positioned to prevent firearm-related injury, the leading cause of d … eous community and healthcare firearm cultures. By preserving families' autonomy and privacy around firearms, S.A.F.E. Firearm's nonjudgemental and universal approach promoted program acceptability and delivery. Consequently, HCWs' understanding versus confusion around this universal, privacy-focused harm reduction approach was foundational to implementati …

OBJECTIVE: Mounting evidence supports early initiation of pharmacological venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis after traumatic brain injury. However, the effectiveness and safety of VTE prophylaxis after penetrating brain injury (PBI) is unclear. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of pharmacological VTE prophylaxis in patients with firearm-related PBI.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients aged ≥ 16 years with isolated firearm-related PBI treated at level I or II trauma centers participating in the American College of Surgeons Tra

BACKGROUND: Rates of firearm violence (FV) surged during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is a paucity of data regarding older adults (OAs) (≥65 years old). This study aimed to evaluate patterns of FV against OAs before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, hypothesizing decreased firearm incidents, injuries, and deaths for OAs due to restricted social movement.
METHODS: Retrospective (2016-2021) data for OAs were obtained from the Gun Violence Archive. The rate of FV was weighted per 10,000 OAs using annual population data from the United States Census Bureau. Mann-Whitney U tests were perfo

IMPORTANCE: International Classification of Diseases-coded hospital discharge data do not accurately reflect whether firearm injuries were caused by assault, unintentional injury, self-harm, legal intervention, or were of undetermined intent. Applying natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) techniques to electronic health record (EHR) narrative text could be associated with improved accuracy of firearm injury intent data.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the accuracy with which an ML model identified firearm injury intent.

BACKGROUND: Firearm sales in the United States (U.S.) markedly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our objective was to determine if firearm injuries in children were associated with stay-at-home orders (SHO) during the COVID-19 pandemic. We hypothesized there would be an increase in pediatric firearm injuries during SHO.
METHODS: This was a multi institutional, retrospective study of institutional trauma registries. Patients <18 years with traumatic injuries meeting National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) criteria were included. A "COVID" cohort, defined as time from initiation of state SHO thr

BACKGROUND: Gaps remained in the updated information of the firearm violence (FV) burden from a global landscape. Understanding the global burden of FV could contribute to decision-making.
METHODS: Data on the FV burden, including physical violence by firearm (PVF), self-harm by firearm (SHF), and unintentional firearm injuries (UFI), were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease 2019. The temporal trends of age-standardized rate (ASR) were estimated using estimated annual percentage change (EAPC).
RESULTS: In 2019, PVF, SHF, and UFI reported 710.64 × 103, 335.25 × 103, and 2,133.88 × 103

BACKGROUND: As many as 34 percent of nonfatal firearm injuries involve the upper extremity. Although not lethal, these injuries cause substantial morbidity. The authors conducted an epidemiologic study characterizing upper extremity firearm-related injuries presenting to U.S. trauma centers over a 10-year period.
METHODS: The authors used the National Trauma Databank from 2007 to 2017 to identify isolated upper extremity firearm-related injuries. Descriptive statistics were performed to characterize patient demographic data, firearm type, extremity injury patterns, treatments received, hospit

OBJECTIVE: Recent policy initiatives aiming to reduce firearm morbidity focus on mental health and illness. However, few studies have simultaneously examined mental health and behavioral predictors within families, or their longitudinal association with newly acquiring a firearm.
METHODS: Population-based, longitudinal survey of 4251 parents of fifth-grade students in 3 US metropolitan areas; 2004 to 2011. Multivariate logistic models were used to assess associations between owning or acquiring a firearm and parent mental illness and substance use.
RESULTS: Ninety-three percent of parents in

Due to the high kinetic energy, of bullets and explosive gun particles, their paths through the abdomen (permanent cavity effect), and the blast effect (temporary cavity effect), firearm injuries (FAI) can produce damage not only in the organ they enter, but in the surrounding tissues as well. Since they change route after entering the body they may cause organ damage in locations other than those at the path of entry. For example, as a result of the crushing onto bone tissues, bullet particles or broken bone fragments may cause further damage outside of the path of travel, For these reasons i

OBJECTIVE: To characterize non-fatal firearm related injuries other than gunshot wounds (non-GSWs) treated in hospital emergency departments in the United States that occur during routine gun handling and recreational use as well as violence related use of a firearm.
METHODS: Cases were identified through the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS). During the study period, 1 January 1993 through 31 December 1996, NEISS consisted of a nationally representative sample of 91 hospitals in the United States having at least six beds and providing 24 hour emergency services.

Gun violence exposure (GVE) is associated with adverse mental health outcomes and firearm carrying. The extent to which community-led programs aimed at reducing violence counteract these effects is unknown. This study sought to examine (1) the relationships between GVE, anticipated risk of assault, psychological distress, and the perceived need to carry a firearm for protection and (2) whether awareness of community violence intervention (CVI) efforts in one's neighborhood moderates these associations. We used weighted survey data from a representative sample of 2,285 Detroit residents collect

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, 29 US states have adopted permitless carry laws, eliminating the requirement to obtain a permit before carrying a firearm in public. Prior research links these policy changes to increases in firearm violence, but less is known about how they relate to individual-level firearm behaviours and purchasing intentions.
METHODS: Using a nationally representative cross-sectional survey of firearm-owning and non-owning US adults conducted in the USA in 2024-2025 (n=18 251), we examined associations between state permitless carry laws and firearm ownership, carrying be
