Employment Standards for Australian Urban Firefighters: Part 3: The Transition From Criterion Task to Test.

OBJECTIVE: In this third communication, the processes for converting criterion occupational tasks into bona fide pre-employment selection tests are presented using urban firefighters as the worked example. METHODS: A total of 14 individuals participated in potential screening tests that targeted three loaded movement categories: single-sided load carriage (4 tests), dragging loads (2 tests), and overhead pushing and holding objects (5 tests). RESULTS: Seven tests emerged, one performed as an isolated pass/fail barrier test (ladder raise) and six incorporated into a sequential, timed circuit …

The utility of tympanic versus oral temperature measurements of firefighters in emergency incident rehabilitation operations.

OBJECTIVES: Emergency incident rehabilitation (EIR) is the process by which firefighters receive medical screening and monitoring as well as oral rehydration while on the scene of intense or extended fire or rescue operations. A crucial parameter in EIR medical monitoring is temperature determination because heat-related illnesses are common. The objective of this study was to compare the use of oral temperature versus infrared tympanic temperature determinations of firefighters in the outdoor environment of EIR operations. METHODS: This was a prospective observational study of firefighters p…

Functional Movement Quality as a Predictor of Task Performance and Air Management in Firefighter Recruit Training.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether functional movement quality predicts occupational task performance and air consumption in firefighter recruits. METHODS: Fifty firefighter recruits enrolled in a 20week training program completed the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and aerobic fitness testing. Occupational performance was assessed using a firespecific course completed in full personal protective equipment and selfcontained breathing apparatus. Outcomes included Course Completion Time (CCT) and FireSpecific Air Consumption (FSAC). Correlation and multiple linear regression analyses examined rel

Prevalence of Temporomandibular Disorders in Military, Police, and Firefighter Personnel: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Military, police, and firefighter personnel routinely face extreme physical and psychological stress, potentially increasing their vulnerability to Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD). While emerging evidence suggests elevated TMD rates in these professions, the collective burden across these services has remained poorly understood, hindering targeted occupational health initiatives. This systematic review and meta-analysis is the first to synthesize global evidence on TMD prevalence in these high-stress uniformed professions. Our primary objectives were to establish a pooled preva

Firefighter turnout gear limits the ability to reach down for an object without flexing the spine.

The restrictive nature of firefighter turnout gear may influence firefighter's ability to lift low-lying objects using strategies aimed at mitigating low back disorder risk. This study examined the influence of each component of firefighter turnout gear on how far they could reach down for an object with their spine physically restricted from forward flexion. Wearing any component of fire gear restricted reach depth (p < 0.001). The greatest amount of restriction, compared to wearing station fatigues, occurred when firefighters wore full gear with boots (12 cm, 95% confidence interval = [10, 1…

Rinse, rebound, repeat: The challenge of decontaminating PFAS-impacted aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicles.

The transition from aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) to fluorine-free foams (F3) requires effective decontamination of aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) vehicles to prevent further PFAS releases. Comprehensive, publicly accessible field assessments of PFAS decontamination protocols for ARFF vehicles are sparse. Herein, PFAS decontamination methods were evaluated on AFFF-impacted ARFF vehicles. PFAS removal was assessed using target PFAS analysis and adsorbable organic fluorine (AOF). While initial samples collected and analyzed using target PFAS analysis demonstrated high removal in the

Occupational Cancer Protection and the Exclusion of Industrial Firefighters in the United States: A Policy and Statutory Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Firefighting is classified as carcinogenic to humans, 1 with the classification explicitly applied across all firefighting settings and employment types, including industrial. Yet occupational cancer protections in the United States are applied inconsistently. Industrial firefighters, exposed to the same carcinogens as municipal firefighters and may face additional industrial-specific hazards, are largely excluded from presumptive cancer statutes and federal benefit programs. METHODS: A policy and statutory analysis was conducted using peer-reviewed exposure science, federal and st…

Mental health after a critical incident: the role of parental status and prior training in firefighters.

INTRODUCTION: In this brief research report, we postulated that operations involving children can increase stress for first responders. Here, a traffic accident in which a mother and her child were fatally wounded was investigated. We postulated that firefighters with children and firefighters without pre-training experience would experience greater psychological impact when responding to this incident. METHODS: All firefighters who responded to the incident could participate voluntarily. Participants (n = 49) were categorized by parental status (n = 24 parents; n = 25 non-parents) and pre-de…

Spectral frequency and broadband noise analysis of the firefighter environment: Potential implications for cardiac health.

Firefighters are well known to have elevated risk of adverse health outcomes across a wide range of diseases and injuries, including cancer, hearing loss, fatal cardiac events, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sleep disorders, and many other adverse outcomes. It has been speculated that the noise environment is a significant risk factor for several of these diseases. In particular, the impact of noise on cardiac outcomes has recently been identified. An environmental survey of noise that included spectral and broadband analysis was conducted across all 14 firehouses in a southeastern cit…

A qualitative investigation of the occupational perceptions of firefighters with or without post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms.

This qualitative study aims to examine the relationships between post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and the perceptions of Turkish firefighters, categorized by lower and higher degrees of PTSS, regarding work and family life, social interactions, and professional circumstances. Eleven firefighters participated in the interviews. The data was analyzed using a thematic approach. The high-PTSS group displayed symptoms such as re-experiencing, avoidance, and hyperarousal, which impeded their daily functioning and occupational performance. The low-PTSS group recognized these symptoms as a natura…

Assessing the Impact of Advanced Cooling Technology in Firefighting Gear During Live Burn Scenario.

OBJECTIVE: A firefighter wears a standard safety coat, its model unchanged for many years, when tackling a fire. We designed a new cooling system coat with carbon nanotube-based fabric and pouches inside the coat for coolants and fans. The coats, one standard and the other still evolving, are compared on several metrics including core body temperature and thermal comfort. METHODS: An experimental protocol was designed involving a live burn facility under the paradigm of noninferiority study with firefighters trying both coats. The metrics are measured at several phases of the protocol. Multiv…

Development of a remotely controllable 4 m long aerial-hose-type firefighting robot.

In a fire outbreak, firefighters are expected to rapidly extinguish fires to stop the spread of damage and prevent secondary disasters. We proposed the concept of a dragon firefighter (DFF), which is a flying-hose-type firefighting robot. We developed a 3.6 m long DFF equipped with two nozzle units and achieved stable flight. However, the system was not yet completed because the root of the robot, which should have been operated remotely, was operated manually. In addition, the system's reliability was insufficient to successfully repeat the demonstration several times. The development of a ro…

Occupational factors and miscarriages in the US fire service: a cross-sectional analysis of women firefighters.

BACKGROUND: Evidence from previous studies suggests that women firefighters have greater risk of some adverse reproductive outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether women firefighters had greater risk of miscarriage compared to non-firefighters and whether there were occupational factors associated with risk of miscarriage among firefighters. METHODS: We studied pregnancies in the United States fire service using data from the Health and Wellness of Women Firefighters Study (n = 3181). We compared the prevalence of miscarriage among firefighters to published rates among n…
