Corneal keloid: clinical, ultrasonographic, and ultrastructural characteristics.

A 70-year-old man was referred to us with a 2-year, progressive, painless decrease in visual acuity in the right eye. Ocular history included extraction of a traumatic cataract with a transclerally fixated posterior chamber intraocular lens. Slitlamp examination showed a raised, white, vascularized mass covering the cornea. The lesion was removed by superficial lamellar keratectomy. Light microscopy examination confirmed the diagnosis of corneal keloid. These uncommon lesions usually develop in adults after corneal traumas, surgery, or inflammatory processes. They have also been described in c

Internal fixation in trapdoor-type orbital blowout fracture.

BACKGROUND: The most common orbital blowout fracture is a trapdoor type. In many cases of trapdoor fracture, the bony segment has a stable hinge consisting of a greenstick fracture and the sinus mucoperiosteum that is attached to the intact orbital wall. If the displaced bony segment opposite the hinge is reduced into the original position and fixed on the unaffected bone, the orbital fracture may be reconstructed by internal fixation of the bony segment itself rather than requiring substitution with alloplastic implants or a bone graft. METHODS: In 20 cases of orbital blowout fracture of a t

Opsoclonus and ocular flutter: evaluation and management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Opsoclonus and ocular flutter are saccadic intrusions characterized by spontaneous, back-to-back, fast eye movements (saccades) that oscillate about the midline of central visual fixation without intervening inter-saccadic intervals. When this type of movement occurs exclusively in the horizontal plane, it is called ocular flutter. When it occurs in multiple planes (i.e. horizontal, vertical, and torsional) it is called opsoclonus. The most common etiologic categories are parainfectious and paraneoplastic diseases. Less common are toxic-metabolic, traumatic, or idiopathic or

Evaluation of fixation in amblyopic patients with myopic anisometropia.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate amblyopic participants with myopic anisometropia who, despite not being initially diagnosed with strabismus, failed to improve their visual acuity (VA) after treatment. The hypothesis is that these individuals present with microtropia (MT) and sensory adaptations. Since they appear orthotropic on the unilateral cover test, the hypothesis was tested through an objective evaluation of fixation, the presence of eccentric fixation (EF) would indicate that these eyes are monocularly deviated. METHODS: Fourteen participants (16.07 ± 10.56 years) were recruit

Abnormal Eye Position Signals in Interstitial Nucleus of Cajal in Monkeys With "A" Pattern Strabismus.

PURPOSE: Pattern strabismus is characterized by a cross-axis pattern of horizontal and vertical misalignments. In A-pattern strabismus, for example, a divergent change in the horizontal misalignment occurs on downgaze. Work with nonhuman primate models has provided evidence that this disorder is associated with abnormal cross-talk between brainstem pathways that normally encode horizontal and vertical eye position and velocity. Neurons in the interstitial nucleus of Cajal (INC) are normally sensitive to vertical eye position; in the present study, we test the hypothesis that, in monkeys with p

[The one and a half vertical syndrome as the only evidence of bilateral thalamo-subthalamic infarction].

INTRODUCTION: The one and a half vertical syndrome consists of paralysis of upward vertical conjugated gaze and monocular paralysis of downward gaze or vice-versa. It occurs as a consequence of a mesencephalodiencephalic lesion, either unilaterally or bilaterally, due to effects on structures such as the interstitial nucleus of Cajal, posterior commissure and rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal bundle. The arterial supply of the structures involved in the supranuclear control of vertical gaze depends on the paramedian thalamic arteries (or posterior thalamo-subthalamic arte

Effects of eye cap occlusion on visual distance and fixating duration of pecking in pigeons.

Avian pecking behavior in birds, analogous to reach-to-grasp in primates, is accompanied by unstable vision due to the co-location of the eyes and bills on the head. Fixation in birds, a brief pause during pecking, enables them to stabilize their visual input to plan their further movements. Several bird species have two high-acuity retinal regions, the area dorsalis and the fovea centralis, which receive input from frontal and lateral visual fields, respectively. However, the contributions of these regions to natural pecking during fixation, especially temporal dynamics and head posture invol

The Shape of Saccade-based Functional Visual Fields (FVFs): A cautionary note.

A Functional Visual Field (FVF) describes an area around the current point of fixation within which some task is done. In visual search, three types of FVF are of interest. The Resolution FVF describes the region within which a specific target can be identified. The Target FVF is a map of the starting point of saccades whose endpoint is a fixation on or near the target of the search, suggesting that the target was found from the previous fixation. If the endpoints of all saccades are normalized to land at one location, the Search FVF is the map of the starting points of all the saccades before

GazePlotter: An open-source solution for the automatic generation of scarf plots from eye-tracking data.

Eye-tracking is widely used to study perception, learning, and decision-making, yet visualising temporally structured gaze behaviour remains challenging. Scarf plots (also known as sequence charts) help illustrate when and where participants focus attention, but existing tools are often proprietary, static, or require programming expertise. GazePlotter is an open-source, browser-based application designed to lower these barriers. GazePlotter automatically processes raw exports from six eye-tracking software tools, including Tobii Pro Lab and GazePoint Analysis, and generates interactive, custo

Unified modelling of gaze and pupil dynamics in saccadic tasks.

This study introduces a unified phenomenological framework to characterize the interconnected dynamics of gaze displacement and pupillary area variation during large-amplitude (30°) horizontal saccades. Using a high-resolution dataset from 242 healthy participants, we modeled primary saccadic shifts and post-saccadic oscillations (PSO) using a combined sigmoidal Boltzmann and damped harmonic oscillator approach. Our framework demonstrates that even after correcting for pupil foreshortening error, the pupillary signal contains physiological PSO-like oscillations that mirror gaze dynamics-a phen

Combining Deep Learning Mechanisms to Predict Interests from Gaze.

This paper proposes a model to predict users' personal interests from their gaze. Current image processing technologies enable us to identify each user's gaze and pupil diameter. However, they cannot identify user interests. The model uses deep learning technologies. It consists of mechanisms to handle the two kinds of gaze: one specific to individuals and the other common to many people. Its training method utilizes the human property that user interests in objects in vision affect their gaze. Since it is known that pupil diameters increase when users view what they are interested in, we can

Neurophysiology of visual tracking in primates: from kinematic analysis to the poly-equilibrium theory.

Recent technological developments facilitated the recording and quantitative analysis of eye movements, to the point where these movements are now widely used to probe diverse kinds of cognition (spatial, temporal, mathematical, social, etc.). This article provides a comprehensive review of the basic neurophysiological aspects underlying gaze direction changes during saccadic and pursuit eye movements, with a focus on primate studies that highlights overlooked but critical complexities. The primary analysis of eye movement kinematics reveals that in response to a moving target, the tracking is

Brainstem Neural Circuits Triggering Vertical Saccades and Fixation.

Neurons in the nucleus raphe interpositus have tonic activity that suppresses saccadic burst neurons (BNs) during eye fixations, and that is inhibited before and during saccades in all directions (omnipause neurons, OPNs). We have previously demonstrated via intracellular recording and anatomical staining in anesthetized cats of both sexes that OPNs are inhibited by BNs in the medullary reticular formation (horizontal inhibitory BNs, IBNs). These horizontal IBNs receive monosynaptic input from the caudal horizontal saccade area of the superior colliculus (SC), and then produce monosynaptic inh

Examining speech-based phonological recoding during reading for adolescent deaf signers.

Much of the debate regarding literacy development in deaf and hard-of-hearing readers surrounds whether there is dependence on phonological decoding of print to speech for such readers, and the literature is mixed. While some reports of deaf children and adults demonstrate the influence of speech-based processing during reading, others find little to no evidence of speech-sound activation. In order to examine the role of speech-based phonological codes when reading, we utilized eye-tracking to examine eye-gaze behaviors employed by deaf children and a control group of hearing primary-school ch

Modelling the eye movements of dyslexic children during reading as a continuous time random walk.

The study of eye movements during reading is considered a valuable tool for understanding the underlying cognitive processes and for its ability to detect alterations that could be associated with neurocognitive deficiencies or visual conditions. During reading, the gaze moves from one position to the next on the text performing a saccade-fixation sequence. This dynamics resembles processes usually described as continuous time random walk, where the jumps are the saccadic movements and waiting times are the duration of fixations. The time between jumps (intersaccadic time) consists of stochast

Binocularity Principles of PRL Development in Patients With Macular Disease.

PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that binocularity requirements for correspondence play a role in establishing the preferred retinal locus (PRL) in macular degeneration. METHODS: Monocular PRL locations in 202 eyes of 101 patients with macular degeneration (79 ± 10 years) were recorded with the MP1 microperimeter. Corresponding PRLs were those with similar polar angle and distance from former fovea in the better eye (BE) and the worse eye (WE). RESULTS: On average, the PRL in the BE was in the foveal proximity at 1.1 ± 0.99 degrees for 55 patients (foveal-driven PRL) and eccentrically at 6.

Spatiotemporal Coding in the Macaque Supplementary Eye Fields: Landmark Influence in the Target-to-Gaze Transformation.

Eye-centered (egocentric) and landmark-centered (allocentric) visual signals influence spatial cognition, navigation, and goal-directed action, but the neural mechanisms that integrate these signals for motor control are poorly understood. A likely candidate for egocentric/allocentric integration in the gaze control system is the supplementary eye fields (SEF), a mediofrontal structure with high-level "executive" functions, spatially tuned visual/motor response fields, and reciprocal projections with the frontal eye fields (FEF). To test this hypothesis, we trained two head-unrestrained monkey

Data-driven analysis of gaze patterns in face perception: Methodological and clinical contributions.

Gaze patterns during face perception have been shown to relate to psychiatric symptoms. Standard analysis of gaze behavior includes calculating fixations within arbitrarily predetermined areas of interest. In contrast to this approach, we present an objective, data-driven method for the analysis of gaze patterns and their relation to diagnostic test scores. This method was applied to data acquired in an adult sample (N = 111) of psychiatry outpatients while they freely looked at images of human faces. Dimensional symptom scores of autism, attention deficit, and depression were collected. A lin
