The accumulation of aging cells significantly contributes to chronic inflammatory diseases such as atherosclerosis. Human carotid artery single-cell sequencing has shown that large numbers of aging foam cells are present in the plaques of human patients. Berberine (BBR) has been shown to inhibit cell senescence, however, the mechanisms involved in its treatment of atherosclerotic senescence have not yet been determined. Changes in plaque morphology and blood chemistry were observed in ApoE[Formula: see text] mice fed with a high-fat diet before and after BBR treatment. Inflammatory proteins li…

In this work, a new class of fourth-generation, zero ozone depletion potential, hydrofluoroolefin-based blowing agents were used to prepare phenolic foam. While hydrofluoroolefin blowing agents have been used previously to prepare polyurethane foams, few studies have been reported on their use in phenolic foams. We introduce an effective method for foam preparation using two low-boiling blowing agents, cis-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene and trans-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene, and their combinations with hexane. Traditionally, phenolic foams have been prepared using chlorofluorocarbons and

The polyurethane (PU) foams can be functionally tailored by modifying the formulation with different additives. One such additive is melamine (MA) formaldehyde resin for improving their flame-retardant properties. In this work, the glycerol-modified (GMF), sodium alginate (SGMF)- and lignosulfonate-modified melamine formaldehyde (LGMF) were prepared and used as flame retardants reacting with isocyanate to prepare the corresponding rigid polyurethane foams (GMF-PU, SGMF-PU and LGMF-PU). The thermomechanical properties and flame-retardant properties of the foams were characterized. The results s

Amorphous, medical grade poly(d,l-lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(d,l-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) were used to develop systems for controlled release of a natural bioactive substance - thymol. Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) was successfully used both as an impregnation medium for thymol incorporation into the polymer matrix and a foaming agent in a single-step batch process. Impregnation of samples using low to moderate scCO2 densities (273 kg/m3 and 630 kg/m3) and short processing times (2 h and 4 h) enabled thymol loading of 0.92%-6.62% and formation of microcellular foams upon system

BACKGROUND: The incidence of acute coronary syndrome caused by the rupture of atherosclerotic plaque and subsequent arterial thrombosis increases as the weather gets colder. However, the association between cold stress and atherosclerotic plaque rupture is currently unknown.
METHODS: An atherosclerotic plaque model was established in rabbits by balloon injury and a high-fat diet with or without cold stress (4 °C, 1 hour per day, 20 weeks) at the onset of modeling. Additionally, oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) was applied to induce the formation of macrophage foam cells in vitro.

A major challenge in chronic wound treatment is maintaining an appropriate wound moisture balance throughout the healing process. Wound dehydration hinders wound healing due to impeded molecule transport and cell migration with associated tissue necrosis. In contrast, wounds that produce excess fluid contain high levels of reactive oxygen species and matrix metalloproteases that impede cell recruitment, extracellular matrix reconstruction, and angiogenesis. Dressings are currently selected based on the relative amount of wound exudate with no universal dressing available that can maintain appr

Liver function tests and liver biopsies were studied in 23 leprosy patients in reaction and 10 without reaction. The liver biopsies in leprosy patients with reaction showed exudative lesions, epithelioid and tuberculoid granulomas, and foam-cell granulomas. Portal vasculitis was encountered in a few cases. Neutrophilic infiltration into the foam-cell granulomas was seen in a few cases of lepromatous (LL) leprosy with reaction. In six cases of borderline (BL, BB and BT) leprosy with reaction, a spectrum of lesions bearing footprints of exudative lesions were seen evolving into epithelioid-cell

In this study, a highly porous collagen-based biodegradable scaffold was developed as an alternative to synthetic, non-degradable corneal implants. The developed method involved lyophilization and subsequent stabilization through N-ethyl-N'-[3-dimethylaminopropyl] carbodiimide/N-hydroxy succinimide (EDC/NHS) cross-linking to yield longer lasting, porous scaffolds with a thickness similar to that of native cornea (500 microm). For collagen-based scaffolds, cross-linking is essential; however, it has direct effects on physical characteristics crucial for optimum cell behavior. Hence, the effect

A histological study of stainable tissue iron in “normal” and iron-loaded methylcellulose-hypersplenic rats is presented. Normal, iron-treated splenectomized and phenylhydrazine-anaemic subjects were controls. Splenomegalic rats demonstrated increased splenic, unchanged hepatic and decreased marrow iron. Administration of iron resulted in increased haemosiderin in the liver, spleen and marrow of normal and polymer-treated rats. The phagocytic cells sequestering ingested polymer concomitantly stored haemosiderin resulting in the demonstration of Prussian blue-positive foam cells. Methylcellulos…

Atherosclerosis is a dominant cause of cardiovascular disease. Accumulation of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), formation of foam cells, and endothelial dysfunction within the arterial intima contribute to atherosclerotic plaque formation. Soy consumption is thought to have positive effect on the prevention of atherosclerosis. Therefore, in the present study, a novel soybean polypeptide dglycin was purified and characterized. Oral administration of 20 mg/g.d dglycin reduced 47.6 % lesion area, and 49.1 % lipid deposition in the atherosclerotic plaques in aortic roots in ApoE-/- mice. In additio…

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the formation of atherosclerotic plaques that consist of numerous cells including smooth muscle cells, endothelial cells, immune cells, and foam cells. The most abundant innate and adaptive immune cells, including neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, B cells, and T cells, play a pivotal role in the inflammatory response, lipoprotein metabolism, and foam cell formation to accelerate atherosclerotic plaque formation. In this review, we have discussed the underlying mechanisms of activated immune cells in promoting AS and rev…

Despite the emergence of hydrogels as ideal candidates for preparing the superhydrophilic materials for emulsion separation, their structural stability and swelling still hinder their long-term use, mainly due to structure defects after swelling. Herein, differing from the common modification, the eco-friendly poly 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (pHEMA) hydrogel foam was designed and synthesized via a one-step strategy by using the high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) template method, which endowed it with a highly interpenetrated porous structure. Unlike the normal swellable hydrogels such as pol

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The formation of subendothelial macrophage-derived foam cells is a key driver of atherogenesis and contributes to the onset and progression of atherosclerosis (AS). The METTL3 gene, a central mediator of N6-methyladenosine (m6A) RNA methylation, serves as a critical regulatory node at the inflammation-metabolism nexus in immune pathophysiology.
METHODS AND RESULT: This study aimed to investigate the METTL3-mediated regulatory mechanisms in subendothelial macrophage-derived foam cells formation and their association with necrosis and the pro-inflammatory properties of AS le…
