OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and laboratory profile of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) of the collapsing subtype in association with infection by parvovirus B19 (PVB19).
CASE REPORT: Female patient, 37 years old, mulatto, developed pharyngalgia and fever with partial improvement after penicillin. After one week we observed reduced urinary output and lower limb edema. Smoker, family and personal history negative for hypertension, diabetes or kidney disease. Patient presented with olyguria, hypertension and edema, also hypochromic microcytic hypoproliferative anemia, nephritic

A case of acute toxaemic schistosomiasis is presented. Abdominal ultrasound examination revealed hepatosplenomegaly, lymphadenomegaly, heterogeneous hepatic parenchyma and heterogeneous focal lesions in the pancreas. CT confirmed lymph node enlargement and hepatosplenomegaly, and showed multiple small focal nodular lesions in the liver and focal lesions in the pancreas. To our knowledge, this is the first description of pancreatic lesions associated with acute Schistosoma mansoni infection.

Pathologic and virologic investigations were done on the fetal placenta and on pup runts which were obtained from a bitch with a medical history of canine herpesvirus (CHV) infection. Macroscopically, the placenta was poorly developed. Small grayish white foci were observed in the placental labyrinth. Characteristic lesions of CHV infection were not prominent in the pups examined. Microscopically, however, focal degenerative and necrotizing lesions were observed in the placental labyrinth. Rarely, eosinophilic or basophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies were in the trophoblastic cells in the n

A child with sickle cell disease developed glomerulonephritis 10 days following an aplastic crisis induced by human parvovirus B 19 infection. An initial kidney biopsy showed focal proliferative glomerulonephritis, and 1 year later was compatible with focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis. Renal tissue, tested by polymerase chain reaction, was positive for parvovirus, while the patient's blood was negative. For the first time a direct relationship has been demonstrated between parvovirus infection and glomerulonephritis.

The theory of focal infection, which was promulgated during the 19(th) and early 20(th) centuries, stated that "foci" of sepsis were responsible for the initiation and progression of a variety of inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, peptic ulcers, and appendicitis. In the oral cavity, therapeutic edentulation was common as a result of the popularity of the focal infection theory. Since many teeth were extracted without evidence of infection, thereby providing no relief of symptoms, the theory was discredited and largely ignored for many years. Recent progress in classification and identifi…

The odontogen brain abscess is a relatively rare, but very serious complication of an infection of the teeth. Frequently the bacteria found by aspiration of the brain abscess are the only indication of a dental focus. The diagnostic problems in confirming a covert dental infection as the cause of the brain abscess are illustrated.

As a healthcare profession, dentists have a role in ensuring the safety of prescribed medicines by reporting adverse drug reactions using the Yellow Card Scheme. This article briefly describes a case where metronidazole, an antibiotic commonly prescribed by dentists, may have caused ototoxicity and explores the evidence around this. It also highlights the method for reporting such effects.

Immediate extraction of teeth in the setting of an acute infection has shown to be beneficial for many reasons. It results in faster resolution of the infection, decreased pain, and earlier return of function and oral intake. The risk of seeding the infection into deeper spaces by performing immediate extraction is low.

Oral diseases may affect general health and many systemic disorders have oral manifestations and implications for dental treatment. This article reviews examples of the oral manifestations of systemic diseases, including oral cancer, diabetes mellitus, and infection from HIV. In addition, the plausible link between periconceptional use of folic acid by the mother and the risk of facial clefts is reviewed. The possible associations between oral infections, specifically periodontal diseases, and both cardiovascular disease and the delivery of preterm low birthweight infants also are reviewed. Th
