Food recovery and produce distribution as a system strategy for increasing access to healthy food among populations experiencing food insecurity: lessons for post-pandemic planning.

Using data from an intercept survey of 428 adults who received free surplus produce at five distribution sites and qualitative data from 15 interviews with site personnel, we examined facilitators (e.g. community partnerships, coalition support) and challenges (e.g. limited refrigerated storage, lack of transportation infrastructure) to operating a food recovery and distribution program in Los Angeles County. Overall, this food system intervention appeared to fill an unmet need for recipients, nearly 80% of whom were food insecure and 60% visited a site several months/year or monthly. For many

A Method for Assessing the Prevalence of Food Insecurity in Older Adults Based on Resource Constraints and Food-Related Physical Functioning Limitations.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with food-related physical functioning limitations often face food insecurity because of challenges that go beyond resource constraints. Difficulties with food acquisition at retailers, and food preparation and consumption are not captured by the United States Department of Agriculture's food security measure. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to develop a method to assess the overall prevalence of food insecurity regardless of underlying cause using validated measures that capture both food-related physical functioning limitations and resource-constraint fo…

Nutritious Supplemental Foods for Pregnant Women from Food Insecure Settings: Types, Nutritional Composition, and Relationships to Health Outcomes.

There is growing evidence that the provision of nutritious supplemental foods to undernourished pregnant women can improve maternal and infant outcomes. However, comparing and synthesizing the evidence base is complicated by differences in interventions and products and the use of ambiguous terminology. We aimed to define 2 common types of nutritious supplemental foods used in pregnancy, balanced energy-protein (BEP) supplements and lipid-based nutrient supplements (LNS), and to review the evidence supporting each via a narrative review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SRMAs). Informat

Food Insecurity and Gastrointestinal Health: Examining Links Between Food Security, Constipation, and Diarrhea in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

PURPOSE: Food insecurity impacts health in a multifactorial fashion, but the relationship with bowel habits is poorly understood. We aimed to examine the association between food insecurity status and bowel habits in a large cohort of US adults. METHODS: We analyzed adults (age 20-59 years) who completed both the bowel habits questionnaire and the food security survey module in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey over a 6-year period from 2005 to 2010 (n = 9,637). Constipation and diarrhea were defined according to Bristol Stool Form Scale and/or stool frequency. Adjusted odd…

Food access determinants and food insecurity severity in the older population: evidence from a nationally representative, cross-sectional survey in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Food access is a critical public health issue closely associated with the growing problem of food insecurity (FI), which has shown a steady increase, particularly among older adults, a population group considered especially vulnerable. This study aimed to examine the situation and the influence of food access determinants at the individual, household, and community levels on the severity of food insecurity among Thai older adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilised secondary data from the 2022-2023 round of the Survey on Food Consumption, Food Security, and Food Literacy…

Objective and perceived food environment and household economic resources related to food insecurity in older adults living alone in rural areas.

BACKGROUND: Limited attention has been paid to an association between food environment and household economic resources related to food expenditure in food-insecure seniors. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between factors of economic resource, food environment, and food insecurity in single seniors residing in rural areas of South Korea. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 170 single senior households aged 65 years or over residing in rural areas. Face-to-face interviews were performed to collect data on demographic characteristics, household economic re…

Queering food security research: A critical analysis of 2SLGBTQ+ People's experiences of food insecurity in Toronto during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Household food insecurity (HFI), stress, isolation, and discrimination are major determinants of health that disproportionately affect 2SLGBTQ + people. The COVID-19 pandemic potentially exacerbated these inequities. This study investigates HFI rates among 2SLGBTQ + adults living in diverse household conditions during the pandemic and explores the idea that heteronormative conceptions of the "household" may affect measurement of HFI. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey responses were collected from 437 self-identified 2SLGBTQ + people from Toronto, Canada between March and July 2021…

Food for cancer health: the impact of a culturally tailored food voucher intervention on food insecurity and quality of life among Latino/a/e/x patients with cancer.

PURPOSE: Food assistance interventions that are culturally tailored, minimize stigma, and promote self-efficacy are needed to promote uptake among low-income, racial, and ethnic minoritized people with cancer. We developed a culturally tailored food voucher intervention and tested its associations with food insecurity (primary outcome) and health-related quality of life (HRQOL), financial toxicity, and cancer treatment adherence (exploratory outcomes). METHODS: Between July 2023 and August 2023, we recruited low-income, racial, and ethnic minoritized adults > 18 years of age with cancer recei…

Food insecurity in young rats induces metabolic remodeling in a sex- and diet-dependent manner.

Exposure of humans to food insecurity (FI), involving sporadic access and low nutritional quality, is associated with later life development of metabolic disease phenotypes, but mechanisms are poorly understood. We exposed very young rats to a 20-day FI intervention or ad-lib (AL) feeding, using either standard chow (SC) or high fat/high sucrose (HF/HS) diets, followed by continued AL feeding on the respective diets for 10-13 weeks. We found that male, but not female rats subjected to FI on the HF/HS diet had increased body fat percentage, ratio of adipose to body weight, and fat cell size com…

Temporal trends in food insecurity among Syrian refugees resettling in Norway: a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: To examine changes in food insecurity among Syrian refugees after resettlement in Norway by length of stay. DESIGN: A longitudinal cohort study surveying Syrian refugees 1- and 4-years post-resettlement to Norway as part of the CHART/Integration for Health study. Using the Seattle short form of the Household Food Security Survey Module, participants were asked if they had worried that food would run out or had experienced that food did not last over the recent year. Changes in food insecurity over time were examined. Additionally, the influence of socio-demographic, migration-rela…

Adolescent food insecurity impairs gut signal sensitivity and cue-induced appetitive behaviours in female rats.

Unpredictable and insufficient access to food, known as food insecurity, is associated with the development of obesity. However, causal mechanisms underlying this paradoxical relationship remain poorly understood. Using a rat model of food insecurity, this study investigated whether food insecurity causes dysregulated feeding behaviours, specifically impaired gut signal sensitivity and enhanced cue-driven appetitive responses. Adolescent female rats were assigned to receive either ad libitum chow access (Food secure), 90% caloric restriction (Food restricted) or unpredictable quantity and timi…

Nurturing Care Systems Underlying Early Childhood Food Insecurity in Brazil: A Causal Loop Diagram Approach.

Experiencing food insecurity in early childhood is associated with adverse health and nutrition outcomes. About 66% of Brazilian households with children are food insecure; however, interventions targeting early childhood have fallen short in addressing food insecurity due to a lack of funding and multisectoral coordination combined with the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, protecting children from food insecurity is a complex task in Brazil and requires innovative approaches. We hypothesize that applying a Nurturing Care Framework (NCF) lens and systems thinking tools can indicate pragmatic path…

Association between food insecurity and Parkinson's disease: A cross-sectional analysis of nationally representative data.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder that imposes a substantial burden on patients and healthcare systems worldwide. Food insecurity, defined as limited or uncertain access to adequate and nutritious food, has been associated with multiple chronic health conditions; however, its relationship with PD has not been well explored. This study aimed to investigate the association between food insecurity and PD using nationally representative data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007 to 2018. A total of 25,714 participants were included…

Household Food Insecurity Risk and Weight Status Outcomes in Early Childhood: A Public Health Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Household food insecurity (HFI), defined as the lack of reliable access to adequate food because of limited money or resources, may influence children's nutritional status. This study aimed to examine the association between HFI risk, based on a single screening item, and underweight and obesity among kindergarten children in Nevada. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the Kindergarten Health Survey (KHS) collected across three school years (2022-2023, 2023-2024, and 2024-2025) were analyzed using a pooled sample of 7267 children. HFI risk was assessed using one item from the Hunge…

Critical level of food insecurity and nonadherence to antiretroviral therapy among adults living with HIV.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is crucial for the clinical management of people living with HIV (PLHIV), but food insecurity can compromise it. The threshold at which food insecurity significantly affects adherence remains poorly studied. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in health care facilities in Kinshasa among 506 PLHIV receiving outpatient ART. Socio-demographic, clinical, behavioural, and nutritional data were collected through structured interviews and medical record reviews. Chi-square tests and logistic regression analyses were performed using Sta…

Exploring the lived experience of food insecurity through the camera lens: A photo elicitation study.

Healthy eating remains unattainable for many due to limited access to affordable, nutritious foods. In the United Kingdom, over 11% of the population is estimated to be food insecure. This study explored the lived experiences of adults living with food insecurity and examined how these experiences shape their dietary health behaviours. Using a photo-elicitation approach, food insecure adults (N = 9) photographed their food environments. The photos were used to guide semi-structured interviews which were transcribed and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Participants viewed healthy foo…

Food insecurity prior to hematopoietic stem cell transplant is associated with malnutrition and worse outcomes.

Food insecurity (FI), defined as the lack of continuous access to adequate food, affects 17-55% of cancer patients. Effects may be exacerbated in hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) patients, who face nutritional challenges due to treatment side effects, leading to weight loss and malnutrition. We hypothesize that pre-HSCT FI increases the risk of malnutrition, requiring nutrition support, and adverse psychosocial outcomes. Between February 2018 and August 2022, 284 patients were screened before HSCT for FI. 71 (25%) were excluded due to missing data. Of the remaining 213, 20 (9.4%) repo…

Health outcomes following childhood or adolescent exposure to household food insecurity: a rapid systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Household food insecurity (HFI) is a social determinant of health globally. Rates of HFI have risen in many high-income countries in recent years, particularly in households with children. The health outcomes associated with HFI for children and adolescents have not been systematically synthesised. This review was conducted to support advocacy efforts for meaningful policy action to reduce HFI in households with children. DESIGN: A systematic search was conducted in Medline, Embase and PsycInfo databases. Primary studies measuring the association between physical or mental health …
