Adding insult to injury: workplace injury in English professional football.

Sociologists studying the topic of workplace injury have neglected professional athletes despite the fact that, for such employees, remaining 'active' at work is of paramount importance. This study involved semi-structured interviews with 47 current and former male professional footballers who all had careers in the English professional football leagues. The interviews focused on the players' experiences of injury and rehabilitation and their relationships with club managers, physiotherapists and doctors. The object of this empirical article concerns an examination of how professional football

Outbreak of Aeromonas hydrophila wound infections associated with mud football.

On 16 February 2002, a total of 26 people presented to the emergency department of the local hospital in the rural town of Collie in southwest Western Australia with many infected scratches and pustules distributed over their bodies. All of the patients had participated in a "mud football" competition the previous day, in which there had been ~100 participants. One patient required removal of an infected thumbnail, and another required surgical debridement of an infected toe. Aeromonas hydrophila was isolated from all 3 patients from whom swab specimens were obtained. To prepare the mud footba

Football Cleats and Injury Patterns in 14- to 19-Year-Old Female Football Players: The Effect of Surface, Gender-Specific Shoe Gear and Cleat Pattern.

BACKGROUND: Female football (soccer) players are at increased risk for lower extremity injuries, yet prevention strategies remain based mostly on male athlete data. Modifiable extrinsic factors including footwear design and playing surface have not been well defined in youth female athletes. The Protect our Players (POP) pilot survey examined links between lower extremity injuries, footwear, and playing surfaces among youth female football players to guide future large-scale research. HYPOTHESIS: Modifiable factors, including footwear design and playing surface, are associated with lower extr

High Prevalence of Varus Knee Malalignment in Adolescent Football Players-Clinical Lower Leg Axis Measurements of Male Junior Football Players Aged 7 to 18 Years.

BACKGROUND: Football, as the most popular sport worldwide, has long been under suspicion of causing varus knee alignment as early as adolescence. However, no causal relationship has yet been found. The first step to do so would be to determine the prevalence of lower leg malalignment among male junior football players depending on age, performance level and the number of active seasons played. METHODS: Leg axis alignment in frontal plane was determined in male junior football players of different age levels between 7 and 18 years by measuring the intercondylar/intermalleolar distance (ICD/IMD

Relative Head Impact Exposure and Brain White Matter Alterations After a Single Season of Competitive Football: A Pilot Comparison of Youth Versus High School Football.

OBJECTIVE: Youth athletes are believed to be more susceptible to white matter (WM) degradation resulting from head impact exposure relative to high school (HS) athletes; this hypothesis has not been objectively tested. The purpose of this study was to determine preseason to postseason changes in WM integrity from repetitive head impacts for youth football (YFB) players compared with HS football players during a competitive football season. DESIGN: Prospective cohort. SETTING: One season of YFB (grades 7 and 8) and varsity HS football (grades 10-12). PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Twelve YF

Somatotype, age, and neuromuscular performance in elite youth football players.

BACKGROUND: Somatotype has been linked to physical performance in youth athletes, but its independent contribution to power development, particularly in relation to biological maturity, remains underexplored. This study examined whether somatotype and age independently influence neuromuscular performance in elite youth football players and whether these effects persist after normalization for body mass. METHODS: A total of 106 elite male academy players aged 15 to 18 years were classified as mesomorphic or ectomorphic using the Heath-Carter method. Performance tests included vertical jumps fr

Analysis of professional football players' sprint performance efficiency in matches.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficiency of the high-intensity exercise performances of professional players during matches. Thirty professional players competed in a total of 38 matches throughout the season. 1,558 sprint efforts were recorded and subsequently analyzed. The sprint efficiency assessment tool ensured good interrater reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient, 0.892; 95% confidence interval, 0.883-0.901) and the validity of the analysis was confirmed by four experts with more than 20 years of experience in football. The total distance and low-intensity running

Potential head injuries in women's football: Identification of coachable moments.

OBJECTIVES: To describe and analyse mechanisms of potential head injuries across a range of playing age-groups during women's European international tournaments and explore whether there were any 'coachable moments' which might prevent a similar incident from being repeated in the future. (NB 'coachable moment' was defined as a player action or behaviour that could be modified through coaching (i.e. it is considered modifiable).) METHODS: This mixed-methods video analysis study reviewed all potential head injuries from the broadcasted match footage from the 2022 UEFA European Women's Football

Movement Configuration Elements in Football Players: Beyond Dynamic Correspondence Principles.

In real-world football training, limited time is available for strength and conditioning sessions during the in-season period. The search for time-efficient strategies that concurrently enhance several locomotive-specific actions while preventing injuries seems crucial. Individual sports coaching literature has provided valuable concepts such as "transfer of training" and "dynamic correspondence" to describe the extent to which a given exercise may enhance sports performance, based on how closely it reproduces the exercise's mechanical, neural, and metabolic demands. However, given the highly

Kinematic Sequencing of the Football Pass Using Inertial Motion Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The kinematic sequencing of overhead throwing demonstrates a series of joint motions to generate the throwing force. The biomechanics of the overhead throw have been heavily researched in baseball players; however, more research is needed on the biomechanics of passing in football quarterbacks. PURPOSE: The purpose of this pilot descriptive study was to identify the kinematic sequencing of a football quarterback's pass using wireless inertial motion technology. STUDY DESIGN: Pilot descriptive cross-sectional study. METHODS: Eight young, healthy, right-handed, pain-free quarterba

An innovative 12-lead resting electrocardiogram dataset in professional football.

This paper aims to provide a comprehensive and innovative 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) dataset tailored to understand the unique needs of professional football players. Other ECG datasets are available but collected from common people, normally with diseases confirmed, while it is well known that ECG characteristics change in athletes and elite players as a result of their intense long-term physical training. This initiative is part of a broader research project employing machine learning (ML) to analyse ECG data in this athlete population and explore them according to the International cri

Assigning goal-probability value to high intensity runs in football.

High intensity run counts-defined as the number of runs where a player reaches and maintains a speed above a certain threshold-are a popular football running statistic in sport science research. While the high intensity run number gives an insight into the volume or intensity of a player's work rate it does not give any indication about the effectiveness of their runs or whether or not they provided value to the team. To provide the missing context of value this research borrows the concept of value models from sports analytics which assign continuous values to each frame of optical tracking d

Medico-legal implications of dementia following concussion in rugby football.

There is litigation in respect of dementia in ex-rugby football players. The allegation is that these ex-players have suffered a traumatic encephalopathy syndrome causing dementia and other neurological problems. The syndrome is alleged to have been caused by repeated concussion during play. It is alleged that governing bodies of rugby should have been aware, and players should have been warned, of this risk. The dilemma, for both claimants and defendants, is that there is no agreed definition of the syndrome nor are there any diagnostic tests that confirm or refute this diagnosis. This paper

Betting on Australian Rules Football: Can Expert Tipsters beat Randomness?

Betting on the various codes of football in Australia accounts for the majority of sports betting, with Australian rules football (AFL) by far the most popular sport in Australia. Several studies have revealed the heavy presence of gambling advertising during AFL broadcasts, and a frequently used advertising strategy involves the use of well-known AFL commentators outlining their tips and betting suggestions. To date, no research has examined the hypotheses that skill may help in predicting AFL matches and monetary outcomes from AFL betting. Rather than merely discounting such ideas, it is imp

Understanding Decision Making by Families About Youth Football Participation Postconcussion.

Many families are concerned about their child's risk of concussion, and some seek counsel from clinicians about whether or not to return to contact sports participation postinjury. The present study sought to identify factors that parents weight most heavily in forming their preferences regarding whether their child should return to contact sport after recovering from a concussion. Survey data were collected from 568 parents of youth football players (aged 7-14 years) in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States (73% response rate). Approximately two thirds (63%) of parents preferred t
