Soft tissue modelling through autowaves for surgery simulation.

Modelling of soft tissue deformation is of great importance to virtual reality based surgery simulation. This paper presents a new methodology for simulation of soft tissue deformation by drawing an analogy between autowaves and soft tissue deformation. The potential energy stored in a soft tissue as a result of a deformation caused by an external force is propagated among mass points of the soft tissue by non-linear autowaves. The novelty of the methodology is that (i) autowave techniques are established to describe the potential energy distribution of a deformation for extrapolating internal

Understanding the role of electrostatic force, van der Waals force, and osmotic pressure in retinal function and barrier integrity.

The retina's intricate interplay of forces and structures, with a focus on the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptors, is essential for retinal health and function. Among these forces, electrostatic forces play a crucial role, working alongside van der Waals forces and oncotic pressure to maintain the retina's attachment to the RPE and ensure the integrity of the blood-retina barrier (BRB). The composition of the interphotoreceptor matrix (IPM), influenced by molecules like Retbindin secreted by rod photoreceptors, further modulates these forces, affecting processes like visual pi

Measuring Molecular Forces With Atomic Force Microscopy 1: Solvent Influence on Hydrophobic Interactions.

Molecular forces drive phenomena such as self-assembly, aggregation, and protein folding, where hydrophobic interactions are paramount. However, the origin of the hydrophobic mechanism remains unknown. Advances in techniques like atomic force microscopy (AFM) have improved our ability to study this topic. Hydrophobic interactions are stronger and longer ranged than van der Waals (vdW) forces, potentially arising from water structuring, polarization, and entropic effects. In this primer, fluorocarbon surfaces were prepared via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on gold to explore the impact of wat

A standardized approach to non-infectious disease cluster investigations in the U.S. Department of the Air Force.

The U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) developed a systematic, multi-phased process for receiving, evaluating, and responding to inquiries about potential non-infectious disease clusters, particularly cancer, within the Department of the Air Force. Created in response to a rise in cluster concerns, this process provides a validated, transparent, and objective evaluation framework with 4 distinct phases: 1) establishing lines of communication, 2) feasibility assessment, 3) epidemiological evaluation, and 4) epidemiological investigation. This framework allows a merit-based ev

Biophysical analysis of drug efficacy on C. elegans models for neurodegenerative and neuromuscular diseases.

Caenorhabditis elegans has emerged as a powerful model organism for drug screening due to its cellular simplicity, genetic amenability and homology to humans combined with its small size and low cost. Currently, high-throughput drug screening assays are mostly based on image-based phenotyping with the focus on morphological-descriptive traits not exploiting key locomotory parameters of this multicellular model with muscles such as its thrashing force, a critical biophysical parameter when screening drugs for muscle-related diseases. In this study, we demonstrated the use of a micropillar-based

Grip Force Modulation on Median Nerve Morphology Changes.

Compression on the median nerve can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), and median nerve indicators measured from ultrasound images can be used for CTS diagnosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between grip force modulation and dynamic morphological changes of the median nerve. We used a digital grip dynamometer to measure grip force while simultaneously conducting ultrasound examinations. Ultrasound images were sampled for both the dominant and nondominant hands of all participants (n = 20) during a baseline condition at approximately 0% maximum voluntary force (M

Effects of inter-synergistic mechanical interactions on the mechanical behaviour of activated spastic semitendinosus muscle of patients with cerebral palsy.

Previous physiological experiments and finite element modelling indicate that inter-synergistic epimuscular myofascial force transmission (EMFT) between co-activated muscles has a potential to affect healthy muscle's contribution to joint moment and joint range of movement. This is quite relevant for patients with cerebral palsy (CP) since, amplitude of spastic muscle's force and the joint range of force exertion are central to the joint movement limitation. Stiffness of activated spastic muscle is also a determinant for pathological joint movement. However, assessments of effects of inter-syn

Comparison of force development strategies of spinal manipulation used for thoracic pain.

INTRODUCTION: To date, there is a paucity of comparative analysis of manual therapeutic procedures for the treatment of pain in the same spinal region. This paper examines the cross correlation of force-time histories across three distinct strategies of force production for the same thoracic spine procedure. Secondary analysis includes examination of the characteristics that account for potential differences. METHODS: A homogeneous sample of 21 male volunteers and three clinicians were selected as a convenience sample. The force-time histories were recorded using a table mounted force plate (

Medical guidelines for space passengers--II.

It now appears likely that commercial entities will carry paying passengers on suborbital spaceflights in this decade. The stresses of spaceflight, the effects of microgravity, and the limited capability for medical care onboard make it advisable to develop a system of medical clearance for such space tourists. The Aerospace Medical Association, therefore, organized a Space Passenger Task Force whose first report on medical guidelines was published in 2001. That report consisted of a list of conditions that would disqualify potential passengers for relatively long orbital flights. The Task For

Gender-Based Differences in the Biomechanical Behavior of the Thorax During CPR Maneuvers.

In this study, 18 rib cages (8 males and 10 females) were segmented from computer tomography (CT) images. In order to analyze the potential differences in thoracic biomechanics during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), a set of numerical experiments was conducted using finite elements (FE). Compression forces were applied at different points on the rib cage. Results indicated that the optimal compression area for both sexes is the sternum at the 5th rib level, requiring the least force to achieve the desired compression depth. Males required greater force than females. Among females, those w

Transferable Potentials for Chloroethenes: Insights into Nonideal Solution Behavior of Environmental Contaminants.

Predicting the nonideal phase behavior of binary and multicomponent systems remains a significant challenge for particle-based simulations. Here, we develop a transferable force field for chloroethenes, common environmental contaminants, that can accurately model the vapor liquid phase equilibria including azeotrope formation. The new all-atom force field reproduces saturated liquid densities, saturated vapor pressures, boiling points, and critical properties within 1, 10, 1, and 1% of the experiment data, respectively. Furthermore, the vapor liquid equilibria of trichloroethylene and 1-propan

The effect of triceps surae contracture force on plantar foot pressure distribution.

BACKGROUND: Triceps surae contractures have been associated with foot and ankle pathology. Achilles tendon contractures have been shown to shift plantar foot pressure from the heel to the forefoot. The purpose of this study was to determine whether isolated gastrocnemius contractures had similar effects and to assess the effects of gastrocnemius or soleus contracture on midfoot plantar pressure. METHODS: Ten fresh frozen cadaver below-knee specimens were loaded to 79 pounds (350 N) plantar force with the foot unconstrained on a 10-degree dorsiflexed plate. Combinations of static gastrocnemius

Evaluation of Applied Force During Nasopharyngeal Swab Sampling Using Handheld Sensorized Instrument.

Nasopharyngeal swab is the most widely used diagnostic test for COVID-19 detection. However, enormous tests have posed a high risk of infection to medical professionals due to close contact with patients and substantial health burden. While automation of the nasopharyngeal swab is regarded as a potential solution to address these problems, the quantitative study of force for safe and effective control has not been widely performed yet. Hence, this study presents applied force during the standard nasopharyngeal swab sampling procedure using a handheld sensorized instrument. The sensorized instr

Optimal contact forces to minimize cardiac perforations before, during, and/or after radiofrequency or cryothermal ablations.

BACKGROUND: Catheter perforations remain a major clinical concern during ablation procedures for treatment of atrial arrhythmias and may lead to life-threatening cardiac tamponade. Radiofrequency (RF) ablation alters the biomechanical properties of cardiac tissue, ultimately allowing for perforation to occur more readily. Studies on the effects of cryoablation on perforation force as well as studies defining the perforation force of human tissue are limited. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the required force to elicit perforation of cardiac atrial tissue after or durin

High-frequency single-beam acoustic tweezers: A numerical investigation of drag and radiation forces.

Single-beam acoustic tweezers (SBAT) use focused ultrasounds to remotely hold, move, and apply forces to objects in three dimensions. Addressing potential applications in the microscopic range requires a high frequency, since the object size scales with the acoustic wavelength. Acoustic streaming, the fluid motion induced by the acoustic attenuation of ultrasonic waves, can generate a drag force that opposes the acoustic radiation force, complicating stable manipulation. This study investigates the interplay between acoustic radiation force and the streaming-induced drag force under sharp focu

Quantifying the Ponseti method.

The Ponseti method is the accepted treatment of idiopathic clubfoot. Although the method of manipulating the baby feet is described in great detail, current study aimed to investigate the magnitude and course of the applied forces in order to optimise the treatment of clubfoot. An instrumented clubfoot model was constructed with force sensors on the location of the first metatarsal (FM) and the talar neck (TN) and treated with the Ponseti method by 17 practitioners. Applied forces on FM and TN were measured during manipulation (4.2N; 12N), during casting (3.2N; 3.5N) and after casting (2.9N; 2

Ultra-wideband radar to measure in vivo muscle forces.

Accurate measures of muscle forces are critical for engineers, clinicians, and biomechanists, yet direct measurement is highly invasive, and current estimation methods remain limited in accuracy. Here, we demonstrate the application of ultra-wideband radar sensors to noninvasively estimate muscle forces by measuring changes in the electromagnetic properties of contracting muscles, in muscles with different structural properties, during various static and dynamic conditions, and in the presence of fatigue. First, we show that ultra-wideband radar scans of muscle can reliably track isometric for

Lab on a tip: Applications of functional atomic force microscopy for the study of electrical properties in biology.

Electrical properties, such as charge propagation, dielectrics, surface potentials, conductivity, and piezoelectricity, play crucial roles in biomolecules, biomembranes, cells, tissues, and other biological samples. However, characterizing these electrical properties in delicate biosamples is challenging. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), the so called "Lab on a Tip" is a powerful and multifunctional approach to quantitatively study the electrical properties of biological samples at the nanometer level. Herein, the principles, theories, and achievements of various modes of AFM in this area have b

Significance of epimuscular myofascial force transmission under passive muscle conditions.

In the past 20 yr, force transmission via connective tissue linkages at the muscle belly surface, called epimuscular myofascial force transmission, has been studied extensively. In this article, the effects of epimuscular linkages under passive muscle conditions are reviewed. Several animal studies that included direct (invasive) measurements of force transmission have shown that different connective tissue structures serve as an epimuscular pathway and that these tissues have sufficient stiffness, especially at supraphysiological muscle lengths and relative positions, to transmit substantial

Corticospinal excitability during imagined and observed dynamic force production tasks: effortfulness matters.

Research on motor imagery and action observation has become increasingly important in recent years particularly because of its potential benefits for movement rehabilitation and the optimization of athletic performance (Munzert et al., 2009). Motor execution, motor imagery, and action observation have been shown to rely largely on a similar neural network in motor and motor-related cortical areas (Jeannerod, 2001). Given that motor imagery is a covert stage of an action and its characteristics, it has been assumed that modifying the motor task in terms of, for example, effort will impact neura
