Hippocampal damage through foreign body placement in organotypic cultures leads to plastic responses in newly born granule cells.

JOURNAL/nrgr/04.03/01300535-202603000-00038/figure1/v/2025-06-16T082406Z/r/image-tiff The dentate gyrus of the hippocampus is a plastic structure that displays modifications at different levels in response to positive stimuli as well as to negative conditions such as brain damage. The latter involves global alterations, making understanding plastic responses triggered by local damage difficult. One key feature of the dentate gyrus is that it contains a well-defined neurogenic niche, the subgranular zone, and beyond neurogenesis, newly born granule cells may maintain a "young" phenotype through

Silicone synovitis: clinical, radiologic, and histologic features.

We have described a patient in whom an erosive arthropathy of the right wrist developed three years after insertion of a silicone lunate prosthesis. The clinical picture of silicone synovitis is being recognized more frequently after bone and joint implants, but the diagnosis may be delayed because initial suspicions focus on infection or crystal-induced arthropathy rather than foreign body reaction.

Conservative Management of Intraocular Graphite Foreign Body: A Case Report and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Retained intraocular graphite foreign bodies are uncommon. Although they are generally inert, they have been reported to cause severe inflammatory reactions and progressive damage to intraocular structures. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 7-year-old girl with a retained intraocular graphite pencil lead foreign body in the vitreous treated conservatively for more than 5 years without any consequences. CONCLUSION: Graphite foreign bodies may be retained in the eye posterior segment without causing any inflammation or damage to the intraocular structures.

Textiloma of the frontal bone twenty years after craniotomy for Apert syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: The presence of intracranial foreign body granulomas is an unusual condition. They can be caused by foreign substances which are either inadvertently or deliberately left in the surgical field. Some foreign materials (textilomas, gossypibomas, gauzomas, muslinomas) along with the resulting foreign body reaction, in the surrounding tissue, can cause infection or abscess formation in an early stage whereas others remain clinically silent for many years. PATIENT: We present the case of a foreign body granuloma (textiloma) caused by a gauze which had been placed, during a corrective

MR imaging of soft-tissue masses. Mass-like lesions that simulate neoplasms.

The MR appearance of soft-tissue masses that simulate neoplasms has been described. In some cases, radiographs may demonstrate characteristic findings in association with MR imaging that may be diagnostic, such as an ossific rim seen in myositis ossificans, periosteal reaction seen in fibro-osseous pseudotumor, and retained foreign bodies present in a foreign body reaction or abscess. In other cases, the characteristic lesion location, age of the patient, and clinical presentation may be suggestive of the diagnosis, as in elastofibroma and nodular fasciitis.

Confocal microscopic evidence of increased Langerhans cell activity after corneal metal foreign body removal.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to examine the corneal inflammatory reaction and Langerhans cells with confocal microscopy after metal foreign body removal. METHODS: Corneal metal foreign body was removed from 9 eyes of 9 consecutive patients 12.1+/-13.6 (4 to 72) hours after superficial angle grinder injury. Both eyes were examined with the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph II (HRT II) Rostock Cornea Module. Morphology and density of epithelium, nerves, metal deposits, keratocytes, endothelium, and Langerhans cells were compared to the uninjured fellow eyes (controls). RESULTS: Irregularity

Recurrent giant cell reaction to residual Proplast in the temporomandibular joint.

Exuberant foreign-body inflammatory reaction to polytetrafluoroethylene implants of the temporomandibular joint, marketed as Proplast-Teflon implants, has been widely recognized. Presently, removal of these implants is generally advised. Extensive damage of the joint and surrounding structures has been reported, including severe bony degeneration, perforation into the middle cranial fossa, and cerebrospinal fluid leak. However, recurrent foreign-body giant cell reaction, presumably as a result of residual Proplast material, has not been reported. We review our experience with Proplast-Teflon i

[Secondary amaurosis after infraorbital injury with a wooden foreign body].

We report a 68-year-old male who had orbital trauma from a bicycle accident. His vision was initially normal but deteriorated over 8 days to complete blindness. After 13 days, when he first consulted a physician, clinical investigation revealed total ophthalmoplegia, ptosis, and chemosis. Computed tomographic scan showed fractures of the medial orbital wall, orbital floor, and posterior ethmoid with dislocation into the orbital apex near the optic nerve. The patient was sent to our department for optic nerve decompression. Clinical examination showed induration and an already healed infraorbit

An unusual foreign body in the distal small intestine: case report.

A case of a deceased 77-year-old woman presenting to the coroner for postmortem examination scribed. A plastic tie used to seal loaves of sliced bread and other plastic-wrapped food stuffs was found clamped by its "teeth" to a length of small bowel proximal to the cecum, resulting in localized mucosal ulceration, thickening, and edema of the bowel wall. There was also infarcted small bowel due to aortic atherosclerosis, which was submitted as the cause of death. The presence of the bread tie probably did not significantly contribute to death but was as an unusual finding at postmortem examinat

Sterile Inflammatory Response Mimicking Infection after DuraGen Duraplasty: A Case Report.

DuraGen, a collagen matrix-based artificial dura mater, is widely used in neurosurgery because of its biocompatibility and ease of use. Although generally considered safe, we present a rare case of a foreign body reaction to DuraGen presenting as a sterile inflammatory response. A 40-year-old woman underwent total resection of a right convexity meningioma, with dural repair using DuraGen. On postoperative day 31, she developed headache, nausea, and vomiting. Imaging revealed significant cerebral edema around the surgical cavity with midline shift but no signs of infection on diffusion-weighted

Scar sarcoidosis in burn scars associated with retained surgical staples.

Scar sarcoidosis is a form of cutaneous sarcoidosis characterized by granulomatous inflammation arising within pre-existing scars or sites of previous trauma. These lesions may develop years after the initial injury and can mimic foreign body granulomatous reactions both clinically and histopathologically. We report a 23-year-old woman who developed erythematous indurated plaques within extensive burn scars 20 years after sustaining a full-thickness scald injury requiring reconstructive surgery with metallic staples. Histopathology revealed granulomatous dermatitis with polarizable foreign mat

Biomechanical and Histological Study of Retrieved LARS Synthetic Ligaments.

BACKGROUND: Synthetic grafts have been used for a number of years in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. One of the more recent additions to the stable of synthetic ligaments is the Ligament Augmentation and Reconstruction System (LARS) ligament. PURPOSE: To analyze the biomechanics and histology of LARS grafts retrieved due to failure of the device. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. METHODS: A total of 22 LARS ligament grafts that were explanted from patients were sent for analysis. Five new, unused samples of the standard LARS ACL graft were also analyzed. B

Polarizable placental particles: a case study and brief review of the literature.

Two otherwise healthy pregnant women presented with intrauterine fetal demise and underwent unremarkable induction of labor. Histopathologic examination of both placentas revealed polarizable foreign material with minimal associated tissue reaction in the membranes and adjacent maternal decidua. No overt foreign body giant cell reaction or inflammation was seen, suggesting recent introduction of the material. Further review of the histories showed that both women had undergone cervical ripening with laminaria. These are strips of collagenous seaweed placed in a closed cervix, where they absorb

[Inflammatory bronchial polyps with a foreign body-like substance].

A 68-year-old male complaining of hemosputum was admitted to our hospital. Fiberoptic bronchoscopic examinations revealed bronchial polyps and a flat foreign body-like substance in the left main bronchus. A closer inspection of a biopsied bronchial inflammatory polyp showed inflammatory edema with hypervascularization in the submucosal space and inflammatory cell infiltration. Following complete removal of this foreign body-like substance, the polyps disappeared within six weeks. It is therefore feasible to assume that the polyps appeared as a reaction to this extrinsic substance. The origin o

Histological analysis of appendices removed during interval appendectomy after conservative management of pediatric patients with acute appendicitis with an inflammatory mass or abscess.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: To clarify the role of interval appendectomy (IA) in pediatric patients with acute appendicitis with an appendiceal inflammatory mass or abscess, we histologically analyzed the appendices removed during IA. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We treated 355 consecutive pediatric patients with acute appendicitis and reviewed the admission charts of patients who started conservative management (CM). The histology of the appendix removed during IA was also examined. The relationships among the clinical features, appendicolith formation at the time of IA and histological findings were analy
