Open reduction and internal fixation of radial head fractures associated with olecranon fracture or dislocation.

Six fracture dislocations or dislocations of the olecranon associated with radial head fractures were treated with open reduction and internal fixation of the radial head. The olecranon was reduced and if fractured (three cases) was internally fixed. Postoperatively, early active range of motion was achieved in all cases. Twelve to 48 months after surgery, there was an average loss of 18 degrees of elbow extension and 56 degrees of forearm rotation. An average of 132 degrees of flexion was maintained. There was no elbow instability or wrist pain.

Efficacy analysis of pedicle screw internal fixation of fractured vertebrae in the treatment of thoracolumbar fractures.

The present study aimed to discuss the method and effect of posterior internal fixation of thoracolumbar fractures strengthened by the vertical stress pedicle screw fixation of fractured vertebrae. Patients with single thoracolumbar fractures were examined retrospectively. Fourteen patients (group A) had been treated with vertical stress pedicle screw fixation of a fractured vertebra and sixteen patients (group B) received traditional double-plate fixation, as a control. All patients were diagnosed with fresh fractures with a complete unilateral or bilateral pedicle and no explosion of the inf

Delayed treatment of femoral neck fractures in 58 children: open reduction internal fixation versus closed reduction internal fixation.

UNLABELLED: The best treatment plan for femoral neck fractures in children in whom treatment is delayed by more than 24 h is unclear because of the limited number of such cases reported. This study compares the outcomes of closed and open reduction performed 24 h after the injury was sustained. We retrospectively reviewed 58 cases (40 males, 18 females) of femoral neck fractures reset after more than a 24-h delay at our hospital (May 2005 to May 2014). According to Delbet's classification, there were 30 type II fractures (51.7%), 21 type III fractures (36.2%), and seven type IV fractures (12.1

Open reduction and internal fixation of humeral midshaft fractures: anterior versus posterior plate fixation.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the humeral shaft represent 2-4% of all fractures. Fractures of the humerus have traditionally been approached posteriorly for open reduction and internal fixation. Reports of treating midshaft fractures with an open anterolateral approach and anterior plating are limited. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a series of humeral shaft fractures treated with plate osteosynthesis regarding the effect of the approach and plate location on the healing rate and occurrence of complications. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients aged over 18 yea

Clinical Results of Percutaneous Fixation of Pelvic and Acetabular Fractures: A Minimally Invasive Internal Fixation Technique.

BACKGROUND: The pelvic ring fractures (PRF) and acetabular fractures (AF) are among the major orthopedic injuries associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Open surgical stabilization is the standard treatment for the majority of these complications. Percutaneous minimally invasive surgical stabilization of the fractures has become an accepted treatment method for the past several years. This study investigated the outcomes of percutaneous fixation of pelvic and acetabular fractures. METHODS: Totally, 143 patients with PRF or AF of whom 95 cases were males underwent percutaneous

[Our experiences with change of osteosynthesis from external fixator to internal fixation in fractures of the lower limb].

INTRODUCTION: In polytrauma patients and fractures with severe soft tissue damage of the lower limb the use of external fixator is indicated. To show the possibilities and limits of change of external fixation to internal osteosynthesis we performed a retrospective analysis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1.1.1993 to 30.6.1997 671 cases were primarily treated with external fixator. After a mean of 16.5 days a change of osteosynthesis was performed in 75 cases. RESULTS: 5 infections of the pin tracks, 3 infections of the wound, two thromboses, one case of thromboembolism and one osteomyelitis

Treatment of open ankle fractures. Immediate internal fixation versus closed immobilization and delayed fixation.

Thirty-one open ankle fractures were treated over a period of 11 years and retrospectively reviewed with an average follow-up period of 61 months. Fifteen were managed by closed immobilization and delayed internal fixation. Sixteen were treated with immediate open reduction and internal fixation. One case in each group became infected. Functional scores at follow-up examination were the same for both groups. The fractures treated with immediate open reduction and internal fixation showed less impairment of range of motion but had a greater incidence of chronic ankle swelling. The hospitalizati

Arthroscopic reduction and internal fixation for fracture of the posterior process of the talus (Shepherd's fracture): a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Fracture of the lateral tubercle of the posterior process of the talus (Shepherd fracture) is an uncommon injury seen in sport. It is secondary either to indirect trauma on the plantarflexed foot or to high-impact direct trauma. The fracture can be missed with conventional X-rays and therefore advanced imaging methods such as CT scans are usually warranted for management planning. There is a low threshold towards surgical management in the displaced or comminuted case as the delayed functional outcome with conservative treatment is frequently sub-optimal with long-term pain, dege

Subtrochanteric Femoral Fracture in a Patient with Osteopetrosis: Treated with Internal Fixation and Complicated by Intraoperative Femoral Neck Fracture.

OBJECTIVE: Osteopetrosis (OP) is a rare, heritable skeletal disorder that is caused by osteoclast dysfunction, leading to failure of bone resorption and increased bone density. The fragility of such dense bone may result in an increased incidence of fractures. Furthermore, surgery in patients with OP is associated with increased technical difficulty and a higher risk of complications. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 20-year-old woman with autosomal dominant OP who developed a subtrochanteric femoral fracture. The fracture was treated by open reduction and internal fixation using a dynamic

Does the level of an intracapsular femoral fracture influence fracture healing after internal fixation? A study of 411 patients.

The aim of the study was to determine if the level of an intracapsular femoral fracture influences the risk of non-union or avascular necrosis occurring after internal fixation. An observer blinded to the outcome of the treatment (fracture union, non-union or avascular necrosis) reviewed the radiographs of 411 patients with an intracapsular fracture, which had been treated by internal fixation. The level of the fracture was determined by two methods, a direct distance measurement and a ratio method. In addition, the diameter of the femoral head was measured. Results indicated that none of the

Finite element analysis of fixation stability according to reduction position for internal fixation of intertrochanteric fractures.

In recent years, finite element analysis (FEA) has been instrumental in comparing the biomechanical stability of various implants for femur fracture treatment and in studying the advantages and disadvantages of different surgical techniques. This analysis has proven helpful for enhancing clinical treatment outcomes. Therefore, this study aimed to numerically analyze fixed stability according to location using FEA. In this study, a virtual finite element model was created based on a clinically anatomically reduced patient. It incorporated positive and negative support derived from intramedullar
