OBJECTIVES: Fractures and dislocations of the bases of the fourth and fifth metacarpal bones are rare, accounting for <1 % of all hand injuries. If left untreated or inadequately fixed, there is a risk of persistent pain, functional impairment, and post-traumatic osteoarthritis. While common surgical approaches such as arthrodesis or suspension arthroplasty have been described, data on alternative treatment options remain limited.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report presents the first documented use of minced cartilage for treating post-traumatic CMC V osteoarthritis. A 17-year-old patient ex

Laryngohyoid fractures in hanging victims are one of the most studied and paradoxically contradictory topics in forensic pathology. According to literary sources, the incidence of laryngohyoid fractures in hanging varies significantly, from 0% to 100%. To verify the diagnostic significance of these injuries in hanging, we prospectively and consecutively analyzed the occurrence of laryngohyoid fractures in a group of 178 suicidal hanging victims (M/F=150/28, aged 14-94years, mean age=50, complete suspension=111 cases, partial suspension=67 cases) in relation to selected variables (age, sex, wei

Objective To study the mechanism of rib fracture caused by landing on different parts of the trunk using finite element method, and to provide some new techniques and new ideas for the reconstruction of the whole process of falls from height. Methods The finite element method was used to study the rib fracture of human security model THUMS4.0 caused by landing on different parts of the trunk. Then the model was compared with actual cases and the mechanism of rib fracture caused by falls from height was analyzed from a biomechanical point of view. Results There were some differences in the stre

CASE: A 4-year-old boy developed malunion after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of a rare lateral condylar humeral fracture running from the lateral humerus, through the trochlear cartilage, to the medial trochlea. Five months after ORIF, the active elbow flexion was limited to 50°. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a step-off of the anterior trochlear cartilage, causing the limited flexion. After conservative observation for 5 years, the flexion improved to 135° and MRI showed that the step-off had disappeared.
CONCLUSION: This case indicates that it is possible for pediatr

Severe intra-articular fractures of the distal radius with comminuted, displaced, and malrotated fragments are the most challenging fracture patterns. Reconstruction faces 3 major problems: fixation of fragments that are too small for stabilization by standard plates or screws, restoration of substantial cartilage loss in the articular surfaces, and extended metaphyseal/subchondral bony defects. For addressing these problems, a strategy is reported, by applying small, subchondrally placed Kirschner wires for the realignment of the articular surfaces, temporary inlay of a silicone foil in case

Review of ankle arthroscopy, as an adjunct during ankle fracture open reduction and internal fixation, suggests that the benefits may outweigh the risks, because cartilage injury and other soft-tissue pathology amenable to arthroscopic treatment are common in patients with fracture of the ankle.

It appears still questionable whether fractures to the superior thyroid horns can be used for forensic reconstruction purposes regarding the functional mechanism causing compression of the neck soft tissues. Localisations and types of such fractures were documented in 118 cases of superior thyroid horn fractures caused by suicidal hanging. The placement of the ligature was above the larynx in 109 cases and in the remaining nine cases across the thyroid cartilage. As a secondary parameter the degree of ossification of thyroid cartilages and superior horns was used. Bone densities of typical cas

Severe trauma of the acetabulum is uncommon in children. However, it must be remembered that these apparently benign lesions can be responsible for serious complications. In a group of 31 children under the age of 16 years presenting with such lesions, 12 already had an adult type skeleton. Amongst the remaining children, 15 presented with fractures or fracture-dislocations of the acetabulum and 4 presented with marginal avulsions of the acetabular ridge. Two epiphysiodeses of the Y cartilage were observed, one in a 2 year old child, revealed by acetabular dysplasia at the age of 8 years, and

A 26-year-old woman was injured in a motor vehicle accident and sustained a bimalleolar fracture of the right ankle. Radiographs revealed a shearing fracture of the medial malleolus and a gap in the distal end of the right fibula that resembled epiphysiolysis in children. Fracture of the distal end of the fibula through a persistent physis was suspected. Histological examination of material obtained from the fracture site during surgery revealed remnants of hyaline cartilage. We believe that the fracture occurred at a persistent physis of the distal end of the fibula.

Accurate evaluation of fracture healing is important for clinical decisions on when to begin weight-bearing and when early intervention is necessary in cases of fracture nonunion. While the stages of healing involving hematoma, cartilage, trabecular bone, and cortical bone have been well characterized histologically, physicians typically track fracture healing by using subjective physical examinations and radiographic techniques that are only able to detect mineralized stages of bone healing. This exposes the need for a quantitative, reliable technique to monitor fracture healing, and particul

We report the case of a young boy who presented a dorsal defect of the patella (DDP) with fracture after a small sport trauma. The patient's parents (professional of health care) had been warned on a possible tumoral disease in a previous consultation and claimed for an accurate diagnosis. Although fracture is rarely reported in DDP, the radiographic image strongly suggested this condition; nevertheless, the diagnosis accuracy requested by the parents lead to indicate a biopsy that showed irregular fragments of laminar bone and hyaline cartilage islands similar to articular cartilage compatibl

Chondral and osteochondral lesions encompass several acute or chronic defects of the articular cartilage and/or subchondral bone. These lesions can result from several different diseases and injuries, including osteochondritis dissecans, osteochondral defects, osteochondral fractures, subchondral bone osteonecrosis, and insufficiency fractures. As the cartilage has a low capacity for regeneration and self-repair, these lesions can progress to osteoarthritis. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the subject matter that it covers. PURPOSE: Phalangeal fractures of the hand are the second most common upper-extremity fracture in the United States. Numerous studies have reported on the biomechanical efficacy of intramedullary (IM) hand nail fixation of the phalanges and increased utilization of IM hand nails. During IM fixation, the nail often penetrates the articular cartilage during insertion. This study seeks to quantify the percentage of cartilage involvement created by anterograde and retrograde intramedullary fixation of proximal and middle phalangeal fractures with 3.0 mm and 3.5 mm IM threaded hand nails.

BACKGROUND: The slicing method that is used for thinning the cartilage graft may cause forming complications in tympanoplasty. Besides, double-layered grafting techniques may be required when graft medialization is observed.
METHOD: This article presents a new and controlled graft cartilage thinning and the cubism graft-harvesting technique in tympanoplasty.
CONCLUSION: Thanks to this new technique, over-curling and undesirable fractures of the cartilage island graft can be prevented and the obtained cartilaginous dust can be mixed with platelet-rich fibrin to form the cubism graft. This com

Traumatic premature fusion of the triradiate cartilage is a rare complication of fractures of the pelvis in children. Only five cases were reported, leading eventually to subluxation of the hip. A case of premature closure of the triradiate cartilage where the injury occurred at the age of four years is reported. Severe hip subluxation with marked shallow acetabulum and widening of its medial wall was noted at the age of 15 years. Intrapelvic epiphysiodesis of the triradiate cartilage, without disturbing the hip joint, was performed in young rabbits, leading to thickening of the acetabular med

This report will present a unique case of a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner who sustained a displaced thyroid cartilage fracture during training, which required surgical treatment to prevent long-term voice complications. The existing medical literature and posts from a common Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu forum were queried to contextualize injuries that the authors contend are both underreported and avoidable. Despite the absence of similar cases in the medical literature, there was a relative abundance of forum posts outlining laryngotracheal symptoms (dysphonia, dysphagia, and odynophagia) sustaine
