Distortion of frontal bones results from cell apoptosis by the mechanical force from the up-migrating eye during metamorphosis in Paralichthys olivaceus.

Craniofacial remodeling during flatfish metamorphosis, including eye migration, is perhaps the most striking example of asymmetric postembryonic development in the vertebrate world. The asymmetry of the cranium mainly results from distortion of the frontal bones, which depends on eye migration during metamorphosis. However, it is unclear how the up-migrating eye causes distortion of the frontal bones. In this study, we first show that distortion of the frontal bones during metamorphosis in Paralichthys olivaceus is the result of cell apoptosis, rather than cell autophagy or cell proliferation.…

Bee-sting, a non-resolving wound and a progressive mass over the right eye preceding the ultimate diagnosis of frontal bone Ewing's sarcoma.

A healthy young lady suffered a bee-sting over her right eyelid which was followed by pain, redness and swelling at, above and beyond the right eyelid. Although the initial swelling subsided, the patient noticed a small 'lump', superior to the eyelid which persisted after the rest of the swelling disappeared. This lump subsequently progressed over a span of 3 months and then caused ulceration of the overlying skin. Further testing revealed the lump to be an Ewing's sarcoma arising from the frontal bone. The patient was treated with standard chemotherapy (16 cycles of vincristine, doxoru…

Single-staged resections and 3D reconstructions of the nasion, glabella, medial orbital wall, and frontal sinus and bone: Long-term outcome and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Aesthetic facial appearance following neurosurgical ablation of frontal fossa tumors is a primary concern for patients and neurosurgeons alike. Craniofacial reconstruction procedures have drastically evolved since the development of three-dimensional computed tomography imaging and computer-assisted programming. Traditionally, two-stage approaches for resection and reconstruction were used; however, these two-stage approaches have many complications including cerebrospinal fluid leaks, necrosis, and pneumocephalus. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present two successful cases of single-stage

Mice lacking the conserved transcription factor Grainyhead-like 3 (Grhl3) display increased apposition of the frontal and parietal bones during embryonic development.

BACKGROUND: Increased apposition of the frontal and parietal bones of the skull during embryogenesis may be a risk factor for the subsequent development of premature skull fusion, or craniosynostosis. Human craniosynostosis is a prevalent, and often serious embryological and neonatal pathology. Other than known mutations in a small number of contributing genes, the aetiology of craniosynostosis is largely unknown. Therefore, the identification of novel genes which contribute to normal skull patterning, morphology and premature suture apposition is imperative, in order to fully understand the g

Prescriptive proprioceptive insoles and dental orthotics change the frontal plane position of the atlas (C1), mastoid, malar, temporal, and sphenoid bones: a preliminary study.

The purpose of this series of case studies was to determine if the frontal plane position of the cranial bones and atlas could be altered using dental orthotics, prescriptive insoles, or both concurrently. The cranial radiographs of four patients were reviewed for the study. Three of the patients were diagnosed as having a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction and a preclinical clubfoot deformity. The fourth patient was diagnosed as having a TMJ dysfunction, a preclinical clubfoot deformity and a Catetgory II sacral occipital subluxation, as designated in the chiropractic's Sacro Occipital

[Comparison of Frontal and Lateral Measurements of Bone Mineral Density of the Lumbar Spine with Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) in Spinal Deformity: a Phantom Study].

The bone mineral density (BMD) measurement of the lumbar spine with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) has the advantage of being able to detect early changes in BMD, which is usually used for the evaluation of drug therapy. However, DXA is not considered suitable for spinal deformity because it is a two-dimensional measurement. The aims of this study were to compare frontal and lateral measurements with a phantom and to examine the possibility of the evaluation of lumbar spine BMD in spinal deformity. The values of frontal and lateral measurements were compared when the lumbar phantom was

Combination of vascularized outer-table calvarial bone graft based on the superficial temporal vessels and allomatrix for the repair of an orbito-frontal blow-out fracture in a child.

CASE PRESENTATION: A vascularized outer-table calvarial bone graft was used for repairing a Posnick type 2 traumatic orbito-frontal bone defect supported by the use of a calcium-based putty (Allomatrix) in a 7-year-old girl. Gaps between the donor and recipient sites were filled with Allomatrix containing demineralized bone matrix particles. Four years later there was a good cosmetic result using an artificial left eye. DISCUSSION: Orbito-frontal defects have been repaired using iso-, allo- or xenografts as well as synthetic materials. Anatomical studies have pointed to the importance of the …

Can Viewing Modality Affect Frontal Mandibular Bone Height Measurement? A Comparison Between 3D Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine Viewer and Printed Portable Document Format Cone Beam Computer Tomography Reports.

Objectives: Buccal cortical bone dimensions are crucial in dental radiology, as they impact orthodontic treatment outcomes. Changes in alveolar bone dimensions can result in malocclusion and require interdisciplinary approaches for correction. The accurate quantification of buccal bone dimensions is crucial for appropriate treatment planning and avoiding medico-legal issues. This study aimed to compare buccal bone height measurements between three-dimensional (3D) digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) data and portable document format (PDF) cone beam computer topography report

Changes in mandibular width and frontal-lower facial profile after orthognathic surgery using sagittal split ramus osteotomy with removal of internal bone interference in patients with class III skeletal malocclusion.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to analyze changes in mandibular width and frontal view ramus inclination using cone beam CT in patients with skeletal class III malocclusion who underwent BSSRO, with the removal of bone interference between segments. METHODS: For all 20 subjects, cone-beam CT imaging was performed prior to surgery (T1), immediately post-surgery (T2), and 6 months after surgery (T3). Reorientation was performed using R2GATE software (MegaGen, Seoul, Korea). The gonion and antegonial notch were used as reference points in the sagittal view, and the most lateral point o

Use of embedded strain gages for the in-vitro study of proximal tibial cancellous bone deformation during knee flexion-extension movement: development, reproducibility and preliminary results of feasibility after frontal low femoral osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: This paper reports the development of an in-vitro technique allowing quantification of relative (not absolute) deformations measured at the level of the cancellous bone of the tibial proximal epiphysis (CB(TPE)) during knee flexion-extension. This method has been developed to allow a future study of the effects of low femoral osteotomies consequence on the CB(TPE). METHODS: Six strain gages were encapsulated in an epoxy resin solution to form, after resin polymerisation, six measurement elements (ME). The latter were inserted into the CB(TPE) of six unembalmed specimens, just belo

Occipitofrontal switching for simultaneous correction of synostotic frontal and occipital plagiocephaly: a novel surgical technique.

Plagiocephaly has traditionally been corrected by unilateral or bilateral frontal bone advancement or rotation using bone-molding forceps and distraction devices. Complete symmetrical correction of deformed frontal bones is considered almost impossible because the curvature of each frontal bone varies. We evaluated the feasibility of measuring the optimal curvature of frontal and occipital bones using a plaster skull model and applying these measurements to "switch" them for simultaneous correction of frontal and occipital plagiocephaly. A 2-year-old girl suffering from unifrontal flattening v…

"Open-window" craniectomy for the removal of frontal sinus mucosa to prevent a delayed mucocele: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Frontal craniotomies for a medial subfrontal approach necessitate crossing the frontal sinus. Large superior extensions of the frontal sinus into frontal bone can result in mucosal retention in a free craniotomy bone flap, leading to a delayed mucocele with significant associated morbidity. The authors describe an "open-window" craniectomy technique that permits mucosal removal under direct vision and maintains the inner table on the bone flap's inferior side, helping to seal off the sinus opening with a pericranial flap. OBSERVATIONS: An illustrative case involving a medial right…

Polyostotic fibrous dysplasia with craniofacial localization presenting with frontal lobe compression in a 14-year-old girl.

We describe a rare case of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia with craniofacial localization associated with involvement of the spine and extremities. A 14-year-old girl presented with progressive headache, left frontal swelling, exophthalmos of the left eye, deformity and palpable mass in the left frontal area. Cranial computerized tomography revealed extensive involvement of all cranial bones except right frontal and right parietal bones. Most of the facial bones were invaded. Especially, there was the involvement of ethmoidal air sinuses and frontal sinus also. Computerized tomography showed lef
