Brain Abscess in the Contralateral Frontal Lobe Associated with Frontal Sinusitis that Spread from Odontogenic Maxillary Sinusitis.

We encountered a case involving a brain abscess in the right frontal lobe of a 12-year-old girl who was diagnosed with a chief complaint of headache and nausea. Left maxillary sinusitis, a dental infection related to dental caries and apical periodontitis, was observed in the left maxillary first molar in addition to left frontal sinusitis also being present. In addition to administering antibacterial agents, extraction of the left maxillary first molar and drainage of the paranasal sinuses and brain abscess were performed. Follow-up over the course of 1 year and 5 months indicated that the pa…

Foster Kennedy Syndrome from Frontal Lobe Meningioma: A Rare Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Foster Kennedy syndrome is a neuro-ophthalmological disorder characterized by ipsilateral vision loss in one eye, followed by clinically significant papilledema in the opposite eye. The presence of mass lesions in the frontal lobe is primarily responsible for this syndrome. This case report further discusses symblepharon as an ocular manifestation of SJS. METHOD: A case report. CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 59-year-old female with a history of progressive headache, anosmia, mental status changes, and progressive poor vision. Ocular examination revealed disc pallor in her le…

Left frontal lobe glioblastoma multiforme masquerading as psychosis: A case report.

Brain tumours often present with a variety of early subtle, non-specific symptoms. This can obscure an organic origin of the illness, which deters timely referral and management. We report a rare case of psychosis in a patient with a left frontal lobe tumour, preceded by 2 months of lethargy and word- finding difficulty with minimal neurological deficits, who was referred to our psychiatric unit from a primary care facility. Blood investigation findings including tumour marker levels were normal. Prompt neuroimaging revealed a left frontal lobe lesion with findings indicating a glioblastoma. T…

Deep phenotyping of frontal lobe epilepsy compared to other epilepsy syndromes.

AIMS: Frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) is understudied and often misdiagnosed. We sought to comprehensively phenotype FLE and to differentiate FLE from other focal and generalised epilepsy syndromes. METHODS: This was a retrospective, observational cohort study of 1078 cases of confirmed epilepsy in a tertiary neurology centre in London. Data sources were electronic health records, investigation reports and clinical letters. RESULTS: 166 patients had FLE based on clinical findings and investigations-97 with identifiable electroencephalography (EEG) foci in frontal areas (definite FLE), while 69 h…

Signal Quality Investigation of a New Wearable Frontal Lobe EEG Device.

The demand for non-laboratory and long-term EEG acquisition in scientific and clinical applications has put forward new requirements for wearable EEG devices. In this paper, a new wearable frontal EEG device called Mindeep was proposed. A signal quality study was then conducted, which included simulated signal tests and signal quality comparison experiments. Simulated signals with different frequencies and amplitudes were used to test the stability of Mindeep’s circuit, and the high correlation coefficients (>0.9) proved that Mindeep has a stable and reliable hardware circuit. The signal quali

Auras in intractable frontal lobe epilepsy: Clinical characteristics, values, and limitations.

Auras are essential in preoperative evaluation and can provide valuable information for delineating seizure onset zones. Frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) is the second most common focal epilepsy, while a few studies have focused on auras in FLE. To better understand FLE, we analyzed the clinical characteristics, values, and limitations of auras in FLE. The incidence rate of aura in FLE was 37.9% in our study. We included 54 patients and 76 auras in 11 categories were reported. The rate of auras in the decreasing order are as follows: autonomic aura; emotional aura; somatosensory aura; psychic aura;…

Case Report: Projectile Into Right Frontal Lobe From a Nail Gun.

We present a case of a nail gun injury penetrating the right maxillary sinus and frontal lobe with complaints of headache and right eye blindness. After surgical removal and treatment, there were no neurological deficits aside from the persistence of right eye blindness that the patient initially presented with. Our report describes the patient's clinical course, the multidisciplinary medical and surgical management, along with the clinical workup and important mental health considerations for patients presenting with intracranial nail gun injuries.

Optic nerve Hemangioblastoma with bilateral frontal lobe Oedema: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hemangioblastomas are rare benign tumours that are most commonly detected in the subtentorium or spinal cord. Optic nerve hemangioblastoma is very rare and is most commonly associated with Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report a case of hemangioblastoma of the optic nerve with bilateral frontal lobe oedema without VHL syndrome, which has not yet been reported. A 51-year-old woman presented with progressive and painless deteriorating vision in the left eye. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a mass at the back of the left orbital optic nerve. Endoscopi…

Causal Evidence for Learning-Dependent Frontal Lobe Contributions to Cognitive Control.

The lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) plays a central role in the prioritization of sensory input based on task relevance. Such top-down control of perception is of fundamental importance in goal-directed behavior, but can also be costly when deployed excessively, necessitating a mechanism that regulates control engagement to align it with changing environmental demands. We have recently introduced the "flexible control model" (FCM), which explains this regulation as resulting from a self-adjusting reinforcement-learning mechanism that infers latent statistical structure in dynamic task environ

Huge Frontal-Temporal Lobe Arachnoid Cyst Presenting as an Weariness Migraine.

To the authors' knowledge, most of intracranial arachnoid cyst located in middle cranial fossa and lateral fissure cistern. So, huge frontal-temporal lobe arachnoid cyst is rare. Symptoms of arachnoid cyst may be atypical, including headache, nausea, vomiting, epilepsy, poor memory, and so on. Of course, migraine related to weariness is a rare benign headache disorder. The authors reported a patient presenting with weariness migraine associated with large frontal-temporal lobe arachnoid cyst.

Sporadic nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy: A consecutive series of 8 cases.

OBJECTIVE: To present findings on a series of cases of sporadic nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (NFLE), a form of NFLE that is infrequently reported, in contrast to familial (autosomal dominant) NFLE. Both forms of NFLE need to be distinguished from parasomnias, nocturnal temporal lobe epilepsy, and other nocturnal disorders. METHODS: Eight consecutive cases of sporadic NFLE were evaluated at a sleep clinic in Taiwan. All patients had clinical evaluations, daytime waking and sleeping EEGs, brain MRIs, and overnight video-polysomnography (vPSG) with seizure montage. RESULTS: Gender was equal …

Mini supraorbital approach to inferior frontal lobe cavernous malformations: case series.

BACKGROUND: Anterior surgical approaches to the inferior frontal lobe require large craniotomies with long incisions and some risk of cosmetic defects and surgical morbidity. A mini supraorbital keyhole approach is an alternative to these larger craniotomies. Inferior frontal lobe cavernous malformations are an excellent target for this minimally invasive approach, and we present our experience with two patients. METHODS: Two patients with inferior frontal lobe cavernous malformations underwent elective resection of their cavernous malformations through a mini supraorbital craniotomy. The sub…

Diagnosing nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy: a case study of two children.

We describe two children of nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (NFLE) diagnosed using carefully observed nocturnal sleep EEGs and detailed patient histories. Case #1, a 14-year-old boy, showed repeated generalized tonic convulsions and frequent eyes opening seizures during sleep. Conventional EEGs - done with the patient awake or in sleep stage I - showed no abnormalities, while a nocturnal sleep EEG - done during in sleep stage II - revealed the repeated, sharp wave bursts predominantly in the right frontal lobe characteristic of NFLE. During these wave bursts, we noticed the boy's eyes opening,…

June 2003: 33-year-old male with a frontal lobe mass.

The June 2003 COM. A 33-year-old male with a history of seizures was found to have an intra- and extra-axial frontal lobe mass. The histology of the resected tumor showed a meningioma with underlying meningioangiomatosis. Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a benign intracortical plaque-like proliferation of meningothelial cells, microvasculature and fibroblast-like cells probably of hamartomatous origin. Very rarely, MA is associated with an overlying meningioma as in this case. When MA is accompanied by a meningioma, it is generally not associated with clinical evidence of neurofibromatosis. It is …

NREM parasomnias: arousal disorders and differentiation from nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy.

Parasomnias emerging from NREM sleep such as sleep walking, sleep terrors and confusional arousals are considered arousal disorders. Nocturnal video-polysomnography is the gold standard to diagnosing and differentiating parasomnias from other arousals with atypical motor behaviors such as nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (NFLE). This form of nocturnal seizures with prominent dystonic-dyskinetic components, in some cases genetic, has been recently identified by means of detailed video-analysis of movements during sleep. The clinical picture of parasomnias (with onset in early childhood, rare epi…
