Development of high performance parasport prosthetic limbs: A proposed framework and case study.

Sport with a disability has progressed from undertaking physical activity for recreation to one of a high performance environment at competitions such as the Paralympic Games. There is currently limited information and guidance to help inform stakeholders as to how to develop the high performance technology of elite athletes who possess limb absence. In this manuscript, a conceptual framework for high performance prosthetic limb creation is presented. This utilises a synthesis between contemporary product design theory and a review of existing case studies. This proposed framework is then appl

Testosterone and cortisol jointly mediate and modulate trust behavior in early adolescence.

During early adolescence, individuals undergo significant changes in neuroendocrine systems, neurodevelopment, and social sensitivity. Placing trust in the appropriate person becomes especially crucial for adolescents, given their increased peer interaction and heightened susceptibility to peer influence during this period. Adolescents take social distance into account when making trust decisions. However, the biological and cognitive mechanisms involved in trust decision-making towards peers of different social distances remain unclear. The present study investigated the interactions among ho

Dynamical analysis of an age-structured COVID-19 transmission model with voluntary vaccination strategies and evolutionary game.

COVID-19 infection exhibits significant age-related differences. In this paper, we consider an infectious disease model with age-structure in susceptibility and evolutionary game and analyze the impact of mandatory and voluntary vaccination strategies on disease progression. We derive the conditions for the existence of equilibria and confirm that the basic reproduction number R0 serves as a threshold parameter that fully determines the dynamical properties of the model. Theoretical analyses indicate that the persistence of COVID-19 is contingent upon the value of the basic reproduction number

Multiplayer social dilemmas in completely mixed populations and networks of mixing communities.

Human and non-human animals often form highly structured social systems in which individuals interact preferentially within specific groups, shaped by habitat structure, movement patterns, or social preferences. We consider a model that captures the interplay between social structure and emerging behaviour. Individuals are probabilistically distributed across the nodes of a spatial network representing interaction sites such as resource patches, territorial areas, or social hubs. Individuals present at the same node interact through a multiplayer game, so group structure is not imposed but ins

Self-organized social distancing during epidemics when the force of infection depends on susceptible and infectious behavior.

During epidemics, individuals may adjust their social behavior in response to the threat. This may affect the course of the epidemic, and, in turn, again modify people's behavior. Game theoretically, the system may end up in a Nash equilibrium, where no member of the population can benefit by unilaterally changing their behavior. Compartmentalized epidemic models can incorporate such endogenous decision making, where individuals try to optimize a utility function via their behavior. Typically, such models can only be solved numerically. Here, we extend a recently discovered analytic solution f

Maintaining homeostasis by decision-making.

Living organisms need to maintain energetic homeostasis. For many species, this implies taking actions with delayed consequences. For example, humans may have to decide between foraging for high-calorie but hard-to-get, and low-calorie but easy-to-get food, under threat of starvation. Homeostatic principles prescribe decisions that maximize the probability of sustaining appropriate energy levels across the entire foraging trajectory. Here, predictions from biological principles contrast with predictions from economic decision-making models based on maximizing the utility of the endpoint outcom

The synergy of immersion and basic psychological needs satisfaction: Exploring gamification's impact on student engagement and learning outcomes.

The integration of gamification into educational institutions has recently attracted considerable interest, owing to the digital era and emerging learning contexts. This study examined how immersion, an essential feature of games, affects various dimensions of education, including satisfaction of basic psychological needs (BPNS), academic engagement, perceived learning effectiveness, and perceived academic performance. Based on Self-determination Theory and the Theory of Gamified Learning, this study investigated how immersion influences autonomy, competence, and relatedness among learners, wh

Beyond entertainment: cultural-psychological mechanisms underlying the reduction of state anxiety in heritage-based serious games.

Anxiety has become an increasingly prominent mental health concern among university students, highlighting the need for effective and engaging intervention approaches. Although serious games have been shown to reduce anxiety, existing research has primarily attributed these effects to general processes such as distraction, relaxation, and immersion, leaving the underlying psychological mechanisms insufficiently specified-particularly in culturally embedded contexts. Drawing on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) framework and Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this study examines whether herita

Virtual reality vs. tablet for procedural comfort using an identical game in children undergoing venipuncture: a randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Recent research has explored the effectiveness of interactive virtual experiences in managing pain and anxiety in children during routine medical procedures, compared to conventional care methods. However, the influence of the specific technology used as an interface, 3-dimensions (D) immersive virtual reality (VR) vs. 2D touch screens, during pediatric venipuncture, remains unexamined. This study aimed to determine if immersive VR is more effective than a tablet in reducing pain and anxiety during short procedures. METHODS: An interactive game was designed by clinicians and psy

Toxic/problematic masculinity: A critical appraisal of its role in CBT.

Recent years have seen the psychological community focus on traditional masculinity as a problem that needs to be addressed. Concurrently, cognitive behavioral therapists have increasingly been women or men who identify with feminist theory. Concerns have been raised that good intentions to address women's issues have transmogrified into open anti-male bias even as men's functioning has declined, including their enrollment in the behavioral health professions. Portraying traditional masculinity as "toxic" is likely to cause harm, not only in stigmatizing many men and their families, but also b

Computer-based training with ortho-phonological units in dyslexic children: new investigations.

This study aims to show that training using a computer game incorporating an audio-visual phoneme discrimination task with phonological units, presented simultaneously with orthographic units, might improve literacy skills. Two experiments were conducted, one in secondary schools with dyslexic children (Experiment 1) and the other in a speech-therapy clinic with individual case studies (Experiment 2). A classical pre-test, training, post-test design was used. The main findings indicated an improvement in reading scores after short intensive training (10 h) in Experiment 1 and progress in the r

Long-Term Functional Outcome of Primary Closure with Hyoglossus Release for Small to Medium Size Lower Gingivobuccal Sulcus Complex Defect: An Alternative Choice to Flaps.

Experimental paradigms are valuable insofar as the timing and other parameters of their stimuli are well specified and controlled, and insofar as they yield data relevant to the cognitive processing that occurs under ecologically valid conditions. These two goals often are at odds, since well controlled stimuli often are too repetitive to sustain subjects' motivation. Studies employing electroencephalography (EEG) are often especially sensitive to this dilemma between ecological validity and experimental control: attaining sufficient signal-to-noise in physiological averages demands large numb

A Game-Theoretic Model of Cholera with Optimal Personal Protection Strategies.

Cholera is an acute gastro-intestinal infection that affects millions of people throughout the world each year, primarily but not exclusively in developing countries. Because of its public health ramifications, considerable mathematical attention has been paid to the disease. Here we consider one neglected aspect of combating cholera: personal participation in anti-cholera interventions. We construct a game-theoretic model of cholera in which individuals choose whether to participate in either vaccination or clean water consumption programs under assumed costs. We find that relying upon indivi

People who play games regularly are no more robust to unpleasant images compared to those who do not in preparation for brain research.

It has been suggested that flickering, striped patterns may be unpleasant to look at as they are difficult stimuli for the visual system to process, and so result in an inefficient, excessive neural response. Some people such as people who experience migraine, may be more susceptible to unpleasant stimuli, and have greater neural responses. Others, such as people who spend a lot of time playing computer games, may have more efficient visual processing and so be more resilient to these unpleasant images. We measured neural responses using steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP, an EEG tec

Can acceleration-coded vibrations help alleviate passenger motion sickness? Investigation in stop-and-go passenger rides.

With the deployment of high levels of vehicle automation, motion sickness is expected to become more prevalent in road transportation. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of haptic motion cueing as a countermeasure to motion sickness. During a stop-and-go ride in an electric vehicle, vibrotactile cues were generated in the seat backrest as an intervention. Grounded in the neural mismatch theory, this approach is based on a recovery hypothesis, proposing that providing somatosensory information consistent with vehicle motion forces can facilitate the restoration of sensory concordance

Parents', Teachers', and Sledders' Acceptability of a Virtual Reality Game for Sledding Safety Education: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Sledding is a common recreational activity in the Alpine region, practiced by families, friends, and at school, but it is rarely considered to cause serious injuries. Current actions to promote safe sledding are limited to announcements at the start of dedicated tracks or to didactic sheets presented by teachers in schools. However, these actions are currently limited and do not allow the development of piloting technique skills. Virtual reality has the potential to develop piloting skills, although the development of a virtual reality for sledding safety education needs to be guid

Systematic Comparison of Brain Imaging Meta-Analyses of ToM with vPT.

In visual perspective taking (vPT) one has to concern oneself with what other people see and how they see it. Since seeing is a mental state, developmental studies have discussed vPT within the domain of "theory of mind (ToM)" but imaging studies have not treated it as such. Based on earlier results from several meta-analyses, we tested for the overlap of visual perspective taking studies with 6 different kinds of ToM studies: false belief, trait judgments, strategic games, social animations, mind in the eyes, and rational actions. Joint activation was observed between the vPT task and some ki
