Auditory Streaming and Prediction in Tinnitus Sufferers.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine whether auditory streaming (segregation of incoming sounds into separate sound sources) and the ability to anticipate future auditory events are affected in tinnitus sufferers compared with nontinnitus controls with matched levels of hearing. It was hypothesized that tinnitus would result in abnormal electroencephalography responses to tone deviants and tone omissions compared to controls for frequencies near the pitch of tinnitus, and this should correspond with increased levels of cortical γ and θ oscillatory rhythms. DESIGN: Sixteen indivi

Hippocampal network dynamics in response to α7 nACh receptors activation in amyloid-β overproducing transgenic mice.

Amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide overproduction is one of the pathomechanisms contributing to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Agonists of α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7 nAChRs) are under development as symptomatic treatments for AD, and clinical findings suggest that α7 nAChR agonists may improve cognitive functions in AD patients. However, interactions between Aβ and α7 nAChRs have been observed, implying that high levels of Aβ may modify the effects of α7 nAChR agonists. Therefore, we tested the α7 nAChR agonist FRM-17874, an analogue of encenicline, in 8-month-old Aβ overproducing 5xFAD mice in a

Beyond beta rhythms: subthalamic aperiodic broadband power scales with Parkinson's disease severity-a cross-sectional multicentre study.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease is linked to increased beta rhythms (13-30 Hz) in the subthalamic nucleus, which correlate with motor symptoms. However, findings across studies are inconsistent. Furthermore, the contribution of other frequencies to symptom severity remains underexplored. METHODS: We analysed subthalamic local field potentials from 119 patients with Parkinson's disease (31 female; mean age 60 ± 9 years) across five independent datasets. Power spectra were parametrised and studied in relation to Levodopa administration and the severity of motor symptoms. FINDINGS: Our findings

Task-Dependent Cortical Oscillatory Dynamics in Functional Constipation.

Functional constipation (FC) is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder thought to arise from the brain-gut axis dysfunction, yet direct human neurophysiological evidence is lacking. We recorded high-density electroencephalography (EEG) data in 21 FC patients and 37 healthy controls across resting, cognitive, and defecation-related tasks. We observed that FC patients displayed a consistent, task-dependent signature compared with healthy controls. At the regional level, FC patients exhibited increased alpha during both resting and defecation-related tasks, reduced temporal gamma during de

Causal evidence for increased theta and gamma phase consistency in a parieto-frontal network during the maintenance of visual attention.

Endogenous visuo-spatial attention is under the control of a fronto-parietal network of brain regions. One key node in this network, the intra-parietal sulcus (IPS), plays a crucial role in maintaining endogenous attention, but little is known about its ongoing physiology and network dynamics during different attentional states. Here, we investigated the reactivity of the left IPS in response to brain stimulation under different states of selective attention. We recorded electroencephalography (EEG) in response to single pulses of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the IPS, while parti

Intracranial EEG-Based Directed Functional Connectivity in Alpha to Gamma Frequency Range Reflects Local Circuits of the Human Mesiotemporal Network.

To date, it is largely unknown how frequency range of neural oscillations measured with EEG is related to functional connectivity. To address this question, we investigated frequency-dependent directed functional connectivity among the structures of mesial and anterior temporal network including amygdala, hippocampus, temporal pole and parahippocampal gyrus in the living human brain. Intracranial EEG recording was obtained from 19 consecutive epilepsy patients with normal anterior mesial temporal MR imaging undergoing intracranial presurgical epilepsy diagnostics with multiple depth electrodes

Differential effects of theta-gamma tACS on motor skill acquisition in young individuals and stroke survivors: A double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Theta-gamma transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) was recently found to enhance thumb acceleration in young, healthy participants, suggesting a potential role in facilitating motor skill acquisition. Given the relevance of motor skill acquisition in stroke rehabilitation, theta-gamma tACS may hold potential for treating stroke survivors. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine the effects of theta-gamma tACS on motor skill acquisition in young, healthy participants and stroke survivors. METHODS: In a pre-registered, double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled study, 78 young,

Camphor-Induced Seizures in Rats Increase the Potency of Gamma Oscillations During the Ictal Period, A Component that may Lead to Refractoriness in Seizure Control.

Particularly in the evaluation of substances that can cause neuronal hyperexcitability, triggering refractoriness to antiepileptic drugs, this has always been of interest to science. This study investigated the neurobehavioral and electrocorticographic (ECoG) characteristics of seizures induced by camphorated oil in Wistar rats and compared them to those triggered by pentylenetetrazol (PTZ), a classical chemoconvulsant model. Male rats received intraperitoneal administration of camphor (470 mg/kg), and behavioral evolution was monitored to characterize seizure onset and progression. ECoG recor

The critical role of phase difference in gamma oscillation within the temporoparietal network for binding visual working memory.

How does the brain enable us to remember two or more object representations in visual working memory (VWM) without confusing them? This "gluing" process, or feature binding, refers to the ability to join certain features together while keeping them segregated from others. Recent neuroimaging research has reported higher BOLD response in the left temporal and parietal cortex during a binding-VWM task. However, less is known about how the two regions work in synchrony to support such process. In this study, we applied transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) over the left temporal and

Changes of gamma-band oscillatory activity to tonic muscle pain.

It is well know that phasic pain could induce suppression of alpha oscillations and enhancement of gamma oscillations. However, the cortical responses to tonic pain, especially tonic pain originating from deep tissue, which was proposed to better resemble the clinical pain, are not well understood. Here we aimed to investigate electroencephalographic (EEG) responses to tonic muscle pain. EEG signals and pain perceptions of three order-counterbalanced conditions: innocuous condition (A, infusion of isotonic saline), noxious conditions with low (B) and medium (C) intensities (infusion of hyperto

Quantification of extracellular levels of corticosterone in the basolateral amygdaloid complex of freely-moving rats: a dialysis study of circadian variation and stress-induced modulation.

Corticosterone influences emotion and cognition via actions in a diversity of corticolimbic structures, including the amygdala. Since extracellular levels of corticosterone in brain have rarely been studied, we characterized a specific and sensitive enzymatic immunoassay for microdialysis quantification of corticosterone in the basolateral amygdaloid complex of freely-moving rats. Corticosterone levels showed marked diurnal variation with an evening (dark phase) peak and stable, low levels during the day (light phase). The "anxiogenic agents", FG7142 (20 mg/kg) and yohimbine (10 mg/kg), and an

Effects of visual stimulation on local field potentials in the midbrain medial longitudinal fasciculus nucleus of Cyprinus carpio.

A bio-robot is a hybrid system wherein human-implemented intervention signals delivered through dedicated control techniques modulate the behaviour of a host living organism. Delivering targeted stimulation to specific brain regions of an organism can induce virtual sensory perceptions analogous to those evoked by natural stimuli, thereby eliciting targeted motor behaviours. This strategy constitutes a pivotal control mechanism for bio-robots. Observations of locomotor behaviour in fish following local brain ablation revealed that neurons in the Nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (N

Comparative Electrocorticographic Signatures of S‑Ketamine and Racemic Ketamine in the Rat Visual Cortex Across Temporal Phases.

Ketamine enantiomers differ neurophysiologically, yet their specific influence on sensory cortical oscillations remains unclear. Characterizing the electrophysiological signatures of S-ketamine (KS) versus racemic ketamine (KSR) in the visual cortexa region highly sensitive to NMDA blockadecan improve understanding of enantiomer-specific neural modulation and anesthetic depth. This study compared the temporal dynamics of cortical oscillations induced by KS and KSR in rat visual cortices during dissociative anesthesia. Adult Wistar rats received KS (50 mg/kg), KSR (50 mg/kg), or saline. Visua

Ca²⁺-dependent ion channels underlying spontaneous activity in insect circadian pacemaker neurons.

Electrical activity in the gamma frequency range is instrumental for temporal encoding on the millisecond scale in attentive vertebrate brains. Surprisingly, also circadian pacemaker neurons in the cockroach Rhyparobia maderae (Leucophaea maderae) employ fast spontaneous rhythmic activity in the gamma band frequency range (20-70  Hz) together with slow rhythmic activity. The ionic conductances controlling this fast spontaneous activity are still unknown. Here, Ca(2+) imaging combined with pharmacology was employed to analyse ion channels underlying spontaneous activity in dispersed circadian p

Pathogenetic role, in human and murine tuberculosis, of changes in the peripheral metabolism of glucocorticoids and antiglucocorticoids.

Immunity to tuberculosis (TB) requires a Th1 pattern of cytokine release, dominated by interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon gamma (IFN gamma). In experimental models even a minor Th2 component (characterized by production of IL-4) abrogates immunity, and leads to an immunopathology that mimics the human disease. Increased exposure of T cells to glucocorticoids drives them towards a Th2 cytokine profile and could therefore help to explain the presence of an inappropriate Th2 component in TB. Analysis of adrenal steroid metabolites in 24-h urine collections revealed a striking increase in metabol

Distinct Theta-gamma network reorganization differentiates hippocampal sclerosis and MRI-negative mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

INTRODUCTION: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), particularly mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE), often presents with visual working memory (VWM) impairments, with potential heterogeneity between hippocampal sclerosis (HS) and MRI-negative subtypes. However, task-related electrophysiological (EEG) evidence regarding brain network alterations during VWM processing in MTLE remains limited. This study aims to identify shared brain network alterations and their behavioral correlates in patients with MTLE and to further characterize subtype-specific differences between HS-MTLE and MRI negative-MTLE.

Coherent Changes in Neural Motor Network Activity during Levodopa-Induced Dyskinesia in a Rat Model of Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Long-term use of levodopa, a metabolic precursor of dopamine (DA) for alleviation of motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD), can cause a serious side effect known as levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID). With the development of LID, high-frequency gamma oscillations (~100 Hz) are registered in the motor cortex (MCx) in patients with PD and rats with experimental PD. Studying alterations in the activity within major components of motor networks during transition from levodopa-off state to dyskinesia can provide useful information about their contribution to the development of abnor

Neural Correlates of Music Listening and Recall in the Human Brain.

Previous neuroimaging studies have identified various brain regions that are activated by music listening or recall. However, little is known about how these brain regions represent the time course and temporal features of music during listening and recall. Here we analyzed neural activity in different brain regions associated with music listening and recall using electrocorticography recordings obtained from 10 epilepsy patients of both genders implanted with subdural electrodes. Electrocorticography signals were recorded while subjects were listening to familiar instrumental music or recalli

tDCS Modulates Visual Gamma Oscillations and Basal Alpha Activity in Occipital Cortices: Evidence from MEG.

Transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) is now a widely used method for modulating the human brain, but the resulting physiological effects are not understood. Recent studies have combined magnetoencephalography (MEG) with simultaneous tDCS to evaluate online changes in occipital alpha and gamma oscillations, but no study to date has quantified the offline (i.e., after tDCS) alterations in these responses. Thirty-five healthy adults received active or sham anodal tDCS to the occipital cortices, and then completed a visual stimulation paradigm during MEG that is known to elicit robust ga
