Oceanapia magna Sponge Presents Dual Effect on the Gastrointestinal Motility of Rodents: In Vitro and In Vivo Assays.

Oceanapia magna Santos-Neto, Nascimento, Cavalcanti and Pinheiro sponges are distributed across tropical worldwide seas. Some studies of marine products have shown interesting activities in smooth muscle models. Hence, we assessed the effect of the ethanolic extract of Oceanapia magna. (OC-EtOH) on acute toxicity and gastrointestinal motility (in vitro and in vivo) in rodent models. On guinea pig ileum, OC-EtOH induced a concentration dependent contraction on basal tonus, which was not inhibited by atropine, but in the presence of pyrilamine or verapamil, the effect was antagonized. Contrastin…

Stimulatory role of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus in gastrointestinal motility through myoelectromechanical coordination in cats.

This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of stimulation of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) on myoelectric activity and motility of the gastric antrum and duodenum in normal and in vagotomized cats. 37 cats were starved for 24 h and then anesthetized with alpha-chloralose (70-80 mg/kg, iv). Electrical stimulation (0.1 mA, 0.2 ms, 50 Hz) of the left DMV was performed through a stereotaxically inserted electrode in 19 of the cats. The remaining 18 cats were injected in the left DMV with a glutamate solution (1 M, 200 nl) through an inserted 3-barreled micropipette. The myoe

Peripheral receptor populations involved in the regulation of gastrointestinal motility and the pharmacological actions of metoclopramide-like drugs.

This minireview is concerned with a re-examination of the locus of action and the possible peripheral mechanisms involved in the gastrointestinal (GI) stimulant effects of metoclopramide. Such a re-evaluation is opportune given the increasing use of this drug in the therapy of certain GI tract disorders. To provide an orientation on this subject the location in the GI tract and function of several relevant receptor types have been reviewed. In the past metoclopramide has been reported to enhance contractions of a variety of GI preparations to electrical stimulation, acetylcholine, carbachol an

Volatile organic compounds in exhaled breath as non-invasive biomarkers for Gastrointestinal motility disorders: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders are characterized by abnormalities in the motor functions of the GI tract. The diagnostic evaluation of these disorders frequently involves invasive and time-consuming examinations, for which access may be limited. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) could serve as non-invasive alternative. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the potential of exhaled breath VOCs as biomarkers in patients with GI symptoms and potential GI motility disorders. METHODS: In this exploratory, prospective study, breath samples were obtained from

Electroacupuncture Improves Gastrointestinal Motility in Rats with Functional Dyspepsia via the GDNF/GFRα1/PI3K/Akt Signaling Pathway.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal gastrointestinal motility plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of functional dyspepsia (FD). Although electroacupuncture (EA) has demonstrated efficacy in FD treatment, its precise mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the specific mechanism through which EA improves gastrointestinal motility in FD. METHODS: Physiological indices, including body weight, food intake, gastrointestinal motility, and gastrointestinal morphology, were utilized to assess the FD model in rats. EA interventions were applied at meridian points, as well as non-meridian points …

Type 1 diabetes mellitus: Complex interplay of oxidative stress, cytokines, gastrointestinal motility and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress is risk factor in progression of diabetes. It can increase cytokine production via several different mechanisms. Inflammation can affect gut neural apparatus that may lead to dysmotility which may exaggerate occurrence of bacterial overgrowth in intestine. Thus, a study was planned to understand the complex interplay of oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines, gut motility and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-five T1DM patients and 75 healthy controls were enrolled. Small intestinal

Catenary cultures of embryonic gastrointestinal tract support organ morphogenesis, motility, neural crest cell migration, and cell differentiation.

The embryonic gastrointestinal tract develops from a simple tube into a coiled, flexed, and regionalized structure. The changes in gut morphology coincide with the differentiation of multiple cell types in concentric layers, and include colonization by migratory neuron precursors, and the development of gastrointestinal motility. We describe a reliable method for growing embryonic mouse intestine in vitro by the attachment of segments of intestinal tract by their cut ends, with the intervening region suspended in the culture medium. These are termed "catenary cultures." E11-E11.5 mouse midgut,…
