In 1983, 685 out of 1,284 patients having suffered from a gastroscopically identified gastric ulcer in the period from 1972 to 1980 answered a questionnaire. Males prevailed in a proportion of 1,7:1. They showed an earlier onset of the disease and a higher operational rate. As much as 44.2% of them reported complications (mostly haemorrhage), 44.8% a gastric operation. The results of roentgenological, gastrofibroscopic and cytological examination of 327 patients with gastric ulcer disease are presented. It was found that gastric ulcer disease can be adequately diagnosed by single roentgenological and gastroscopic examination in 74 and 80.4% of cases, respectively. We present two patients with bleeding episodes from gastric fundal varices. The gastric fundal varices were treated by balloon catheter-assisted endoscopic sclerotherapy using alpha-cyanoacrylate monomer. The varices were successfully obliterated with no complications or hemodynamic changes to the gastrorenal shunts. This procedure may be considered a novel, feasible approach to the treatment of gastric fundal varices in the future.

A new technique of endoscopic treatment for gastric varices is presented here, which was applied in 10 patients, either electively (n = 9) or as emergency therapy for bleeding (n = 9) or as emergency therapy for bleeding (n = 1). The pH values in 203 patients with various gastroduodenal pathologies were measured by means of a glass electrode inserted into the bioptic channel of the gastroscope.
