The subjects of the study were 112 patients with rheumatic polymyalgia (RPM) and giant-cell arteritis (GSA). The study shows that RPM and GSA are complicated by cerebral flow disturbances and myocardial infarction. Therapy with prednisolone and non-steroid antiinflammatory drugs reduces the risk of these complications and lethal outcome in patients with RPM and GSA.

Annular elastolytic giant cell granuloma is a granulomatous process that presents as slowly growing annular papules and plaques on sun-exposed skin. It was first described in patients in the fourth and fifth decades of life. These lesions are primarily distributed on the head and neck. A review of the literature shows a preponderance of cases in adults. We report two cases of annular elastolytic giant cell granuloma developing in children under the age of 11 years.

Subependymal giant cell astrocytoma (SEGCA) is a benign, slow-growing glial tumor that manifests with signs and symptoms of obstructive hydrocephalus most often in adolescent patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Neonatal highly aggressive SEGCA is very rare. We report a 5-month-old child with TSC presenting with a cystic mass lesion in the left frontal lobe as well as multiple other periventricular masses. After initial conservative treatment, the child was readmitted with intractable seizures, a massive increase in the size of the left frontal lobe tumor and obstructive hydrocephal

OBJECTIVE: Although it has been suggested that sex differences underlie the varying presentation of giant cell arteritis (GCA), this has not been proven. We compared medical history, symptoms, and signs in patients with GCA and polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR).
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study in the Hadassah University Hospitals in Jerusalem, Israel. We evaluated medical data of 88 patients (59 women, 29 men) admitted with the diagnosis of GCA or PMR between 1980 and 1998.
RESULTS: Comparison of comorbidities among patients showed that non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, cerebro

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is traditionally considered to spare the kidney, although an uncontrolled study reported microscopic haematuria in 10 out of 30 patients with GCA. To study the frequency and the characteristics of microscopic haematuria in GCA, we retrospectively studied 42 patients with biopsy-proven GCA, 39 patients with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and 62 control patients >or=60 years of age, admitted to the general internal medicine unit. Patients with pyuria, significant bacteriuria or a known haematuric disorder were excluded. Microscopic haematuria was defined as the presence

The giant cell tumors usually present in epiphysis of long bones. These are uncommon tumors in head and neck region. These tumors have benign historical features but can be aggressive locally and even can metastasise to lungs. This rare tumor in hard palate is being reported here which was excised transpalatly.

PURPOSE: To describe clinical and histologic features of the first case, to our knowledge, of giant cell angiofibroma located in the nasolac … zed by haphazardly arranged oval to spindled cells, a myxoid and collagenous stroma, multinucleated giant cells, prominent blood vessels, and pseudovascular spaces. Tumor cells were strongly positive for vimentin and CD34 and were negative for other antigens. After excision, there has been no recurrence over 4 years of follow-up.

It is not well known that giant cell arteritis can cause fatal complications due to rupture of aortic aneurysms or cerebral and myocardial infarctions. If corticosteroid treatment is started early, most of these complications can be avoided.

PMR and GCA are related conditions that seem to represent a continuum of disease. These conditions are relatively common and seem to be mediated by a cellular inflammatory response. Increasing evidence suggests an infectious cause (or causes) precipitating this immune response in genetically susceptible individuals. Whereas previously thought to affect primarily branch vessels of the aortic arch, GCA is now thought of as a disease in which proximal aortic involvement is frequent. Despite the potential for serious, even fatal complications, overall prognosis for patients with GCA or PMR is exce

PURPOSE: To report a case of giant cell reparative granuloma occurring in the orbit and to discuss its clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic characteristics in contrast with other similar lesions.
METHODS: A 38-year-old man developed pain and mild proptosis of the left eye. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an intraosseous cystic orbital mass. Excisional biopsy disclosed giant cell reparative granuloma of the orbit.
RESULT: At 11 months' follow-up, the patient had normal vision, with no tumor recurrence.
CONCLUSION: Giant cell reparative granuloma of the or

Over a one month period, a 74-year-old man developed typical features of giant cell arteritis (GCA) including visual changes, headache, scalp tenderness, and an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. In addition, he had reproducible painless dysarthria that was precipitated by chewing or prolonged talking and was relieved by resting the jaw. The dysarthria with chewing along with the other classical symptoms of GCA subsided with treatment. To our knowledge this is the first report of painless dysarthria associated with GCA.

PURPOSE: To report the ocular manifestations of giant cell arteritis using the strict criterion of a positive temporal artery biopsy for diagnosis of giant cell arteritis.
METHODS: In a prospective study from 1973 to 1995, we investigated 170 patients whose diagnosis of giant cell arteritis was confirmed on temporal artery biopsy. At the initial visit, all patients were questioned regarding systemic and ocular signs and symptoms of giant cell arteritis and underwent ophthalmic, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (Westergren), and C-reactive protein evaluations. Any patient with a high index of su

Giant cell (temporal) arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica are related conditions that primarily affect older persons. They are among the most common chronic inflammatory disorders in this age group. In recent years, several new insights have been gained about the clinical features of these illnesses as well as their underlying pathophysiology. In addition, a great deal of study is underway to find better ways of detecting, monitoring, and treating them. This article provides a general review of these conditions, including their diagnosis and treatment.
