Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric movement disorder characterised by the presence of multiple tics. Tics have an unusual, intermediate status between voluntary and involuntary movements. This ambiguity might involve not just a disorder of movement generation but also an abnormality of voluntary experience. Here the experience of voluntary movements in adult patients with TS is investigated and compared with healthy controls. A group of adult TS patients and age matched control participants estimated the time of conscious intention to perform a simple keypress movement

INTRODUCTION: Tourette's syndrome is a neurological disorder of genetic order that begins in childhood, being characterized by the presence of multiple phonic and motor tics.
CLINICAL CASE: A male with previous dissociative and conversion psychopathology initiated motor and phonic tics in the adulthood in the context of several inter and intrapersonal conflicts beginning in childhood. No improvement was observed when drug treatment was established, there being partial response with psychotherapy oriented to coping with threatening situations.
CONCLUSIONS: The psychopathology of the obsessive

Tourette syndrome is a neuropsychiatric syndrome characterized by motor and vocal tics with further co-morbidities, e.g. obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. There is only a single prior case report in pregnancy in addition to a postal questionnaire study including 10 pregnancies. In a series of 11 pregnancies in patients assessed by the authors, there were no adverse effects on the pregnancy, although some obstetricians were unduly concerned. There was no consistent effect on the severity of the tics, although in some women there seemed to be a significa

OBJECTIVES: Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a chronic tic disorder associated with comorbid psychopathology, including obsessionality, affective instability and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Evidence linking GTS with schizophrenia-like symptoms is limited and equivocal, despite a common putative substrate involving dopaminergic dysfunction within frontostriatal circuits. The aim of this study was to quantify the prevalence of schizotypal traits in GTS and to detail the relationship between schizotypy and comorbid psychopathology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 102 subje

To investigate the immune-mediated response in TS, and its relationship with streptococcal infection, we measured serum levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and E-selectin in patients with TS, compared to healthy and diseased controls. Soluble VCAM-1 and sE-selectin were significantly elevated in children and adults with TS, and sVCAM-1 was higher among anti-basal ganglia antibodies (ABGA)-positive adults with TS. No correlation of adhesion molecule levels to clinical severity or anti-streptococcal antibodies was observed. Chi

UNLABELLED: Although there only have been a limited number of double-blind, placebo controlled trials, antipsychotics are considered to be effective drugs for the treatment of tics in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). Evidence concerning the efficacy of olanzapine and other atypical antipsychotics in the treatment of tics in GTS is growing, but still limited. Little is known about the use of olanzapine in adult GTS patients and about its effect on comorbid behavioural problems. We report on the use of olanzapine in a 25-year old male GTS patient with comorbid obsessive-compulsive behaviour

Georges Albert Edouard Brutus Gilles de la Tourette (1857-1904), a French neurologist and pupil of Jean Martin Charcot at the Salpêtrière hospital in Paris, has gained common recognition through his description of the 'Maladie des Tics'. This complex neuropsychiatric disorder, later known as the 'Tourette's syndrome', nowadays is accepted as a specific entity of movement disorders. Gilles had started working under Charcot (1825-1893), the first physician to occupy a designated chair of neurology of neuropsychiatric history, in 1884. Then the Salpêtrière hospital was a centre of intensive resea

Activated glial cells play an important role in a variety of neurological disorders. This study examines S100B protein levels in the serum of patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, as potential marker for glial cell function. Two groups of children were examined: 61 reference patients and 33 patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. It was found that S100B serum concentrations in the reference group decrease with increasing age. Furthermore it was found that the mean S100B concentration in serum of children with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is significantly higher than in the refe

Color perception was tested using the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue Test in a sample of persons with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS), and compared to norms from three age cohorts in the early second, fourth and sixth decades. Red-green color errors on the Farnsworth-Munsell did not appear to change appreciably as a function of age or GTS. Blue-yellow error scores did, however, increase with age and were exaggerated in the GTS group. It is concluded that sensory and perceptual disturbances are present in GTS as in other basal cell ganglia disorders. The results are discussed in terms of conve

Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (GTS) is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. The cause of this syndrome is unknown, although based on family studies there is evidence of a strong genetic component. We report on a 13-year-old boy with GTS, minor physical anomalies, and a de novo partial duplication of chromosome 7q [dup(7)(q22.1-q31.1)]. The distal breakpoint in our patient is similar to the breakpoint of an apparently balanced familial translocation t(7;18) segregating with GTS. Together, these cases provide evidence that a gene located in the breakpoint r

The purpose of this study was to investigate the roles of branchial and gas bladder reflex pathways in the control of gill ventilation and air-breathing in the bowfin Amia calva. We have previously determined that bowfin use two distinct air-breathing mechanisms to ventilate the gas bladder: type I air breaths are characterized by exhalation followed by inhalation, are stimulated by aquatic or aerial hypoxia and appear to regulate O2 gas exchange; type II air breaths are characterized by inhalation alone and possibly regulate gas bladder volume and buoyancy. In the present study, we test the h

Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by both motor and vocal tics. Despite clear evidence for a genetic predisposition to TS from family, twin, and adoption studies, there have been no confirmed linkage findings. In this article we test for linkage to TS in multigenerational families segregating TS using a panel of 386 markers with the largest interval between any two markers being 28 cM and an average distance between markers of 10 cM. We tested for linkage using an autosomal dominant model with reduced penetrance and using nonparametric methods. No

BACKGROUND: Statistical characterization of tic behavior in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) may provide insight into the dynamic functioning of the human central nervous system, as well as improve the quantitative assessment of tic symptom severity.
METHODS: Twenty-two medication-free GTS subjects underwent videotaping of their tics. The intervals between temporally adjacent tics were measured, and the statistical properties of these intervals were assessed through graphical representation of frequency distributions, autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) modeling, spectral ana

BACKGROUND: Functional brain imaging with technetium-99m d,l-hexamethyl propyleneamine oxime (HMPAO) Single Photon Emission Tomography (SPET) allows us to explore the cerebral pathophysiology of Gilles de la Tourette's Syndrome (GTS).
METHOD: Fifty patients and 20 controls were examined. Patients were rated for tic severity and mood. Scans were analysed quantitatively using internal ratios to the occipital cortex.
RESULTS: Patients different from controls on measures of relative blood flow to the left caudate, anterior cingulate cortex and the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Severity of
