A 4-year-old thoroughbred cross mare was referred to the University of Edinburgh Veterinary School Equine Hospital for treatment of a soft tissue tumor on the buccal gingival margin of the rostral right maxillary cheek teeth. The lesion was initially surgically excised and diagnosed as a fibrosarcoma via histopathology. Adjunctive treatment with intralesional cisplatin chemotherapy was begun. The tumor recurred and was repeatedly treated with intralesional cisplatin injections and additional surgical resection over the course of 14 weeks. Despite the initial poor response to treatment, no furt

Gingival recessions represent the most visible periodontal disease. The prevalence of gingival recessions is high. The root surface is literally exposed to negative influences such as erosion, abrasion, discoloration and decay. Moreover, gingival recessions can affect the quality of life by increased thermal sensitivity and reduced dento-gingival aesthetics. The aetiology of gingival recessions is complex and considered to be multifactorial. In order to prevent the development of gingival recessions during and after orthodontic treatment, several factors should be taken into account, among whi

Idiopathic gingival fibromatosis (IGF) is a rare hereditary condition characterized by slowly progressive, nonhemorrhagic, fibrous enlargement of maxillary and mandibular keratinized gingiva caused by increase in submucosal connective tissue elements, mostly associated with some syndrome. This case report describes a case of nonsyndromic generalized IGF in an 18-year-old male patient who presented with generalized gingival enlargement. The enlarged tissue was surgically removed by internal bevel gingivectomy and ledge and wedge procedure. The patient was regularly monitored clinically for impr

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is a rare condition that can occur as an isolated disease, chromosomal abnormality, or as part of a number of syndromes. The gingival enlargement in HGF can be so severe that it can cover the crowns of teeth completely, causing severe functional derangement and facial disfigurement. Through review of literature revealed that HGF is usually an autosomal dominant condition, however the recessive forms are also reported. The hyperplastic gingiva is firm on palpation and has normal color with abundant stippling on the adjacent gingiva. The buccal and lingual

A woman visited her dentist with complaints of swollen gums. If there was a serious infection of multiple teeth, the surgeon had to do a total extraction of the upper jaw. The clinical picture was suspicious for a lymphoma, a fibromatosis or a gingivitis. The biopsy showed a chronical infection. In this case the gingival overgrowth and the subsequent infection of the teeth were caused by nifedipine. Gingival enlargement can be a consequence of the administration of calcium channel blockers and can occur if these are administered during a few months or years. The incidence is 0,01-0,1% and the …

Vulvovaginal-gingival syndrome is a distinct variant of classic lichen planus frequently associated with mucocutaneous scarring and vaginal stricture formation, therefore early diagnosis and treatment through a multidisciplinary approach is essential. Management is challenging and is characterised by wide variation in treatments and lack of evidence-based therapeutic approaches. Literature review with particular regard to therapeutic approaches is performed with a view towards a cooperative treatment study.

Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic inflammatory disease of uncertain etiology. When the gingiva is affected, the LP can appear under several clinical forms. The diagnosis of the gingival lichen planus is based on the anamnesis, the clinical observation and the histological analysis. Various medicamentous and non medicamentous treatments are used to treat gingival LP with random results, due to the lack of knowledge on the etiology and the recidiving character of the lesions. The risk of malignant transformation of gingival LP is weak but it depends on clinical forms, justifying a periodic follow-

Gingival replacement is often a component of comprehensive prosthodontics. Gingival prostheses may be fixed or removable and may be made from acrylics, composite resins, silicones or porcelain-based materials. Undercuts or dental attachments are used to secure removable prostheses, which are esthetically pleasing and easy to maintain. This paper describes several clinical situations in which gingival prostheses were used effectively.

INTRODUCTION: Dentists traditionally have thought of periodontal treatment as a means of saving the teeth while leaving the patient with an esthetic problem. This no longer is true. The goal of this article is to show how esthetic crown-lengthening procedures, papillary regeneration and root coverage may enhance the overall esthetic results of periodontal treatment.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Esthetic crown lengthening aims not only to provide biological width for the healthy restoration of teeth, but also to permit esthetic gingival and prosthetic contours. Papillary regeneration aims to fill the

To review the hypothesis that toothbrushing leads to gingival recession. Gingival recession develops due to anatomical and pathological factors. The prevalence of recession is dependent on the age and characteristic of the population because it usually presents in individuals with periodontal disease or those who practise zealous or improper oral hygiene methods. Gingival trauma and gingival abrasion from toothbrushing is thought to progress directly to gingival recession. Case studies documenting recession from toothbrush trauma are speculative. Short-term studies suggest that gingival trauma

This, the second paper in a short series on gingival recession, discusses the various modalities of treatment for gingival recession and the indications for treatment. Special consideration is given to the surgical treatment techniques. Factors affecting the outcome of treatment and success rates of the treatment options are also discussed.

In this study, we investigated gingival enlargement in patients with acromegaly as a component of the disease. Eleven patients (5 males, 6 females) were evaluated. Diagnosis was confirmed with typical clinical features and laboratory. Oral examinations were carried out by the same periodontist. During the examination, plaque index, gingival index, probing pocket depths, and gingival enlargement values were evaluated. Duration of the disease was between 0.2 and 13 yr. Seven patients had pituitary macroadenomas and four had microadenomas during their initial diagnosis. Only one patient was newly

The clinical manifestation of plaque-induced gingival inflammation is modulated by the hormonal imbalances during pregnancy. Different forms of severity have been described. During the first months of the pregnancy, the persistent influence of the plaque induces catarrhal inflammation of the gingiva that serves as a base for the development of hyperplastic gingivitis during the last months, modulated by the cumulating hormonal stimuli. In non-controlled cases a development of pyogenic granuloma can be observed. This lesion is rarely observed in women with poor oral hygiene in regions with loca…

Five patients with small, exophytic, asymptomatic fibrous nodules, single or multiple, of the mandibular mucogingival zone of the anterior labial gingiva are presented. Such nodules are benign and resemble small fibromas. The clinical and histologic appearance distinguishes them from entities such as retrocuspid papilla, reticular mandibular gingival ridges, oral hamartomas associated with Cowden's syndrome, tuberous sclerosis oral lesions, and oral nodules secondary to epidermolysis bullosa. Gingival fibrous nodule, or gingival nodule, is the proposed name for this lesion, which is essentiall

Five cases of familial and idiopathic gingival fibromatosis were reported. One case exhibited peculiar histologic features, which consisted of active growth of the fibroblastic cells. One hundred and ninety-six cases of gingival fibromatosis, whose clinical and/or pathologic findings were known, were collected from foreign literatures. The heterogeneity in gingival fibromatosis was discussed.
